Subject: Obit: Theresa died this morning
From: GUEST,Sheila in China
Date: 02 Jan 10 - 06:59 AM

I just happened to ring Kath who has been such a huge support to Theresa to get the update and spoke to Kath's daughter who said Theresa died in hospital this morning (Saturday). I am sure people will be able to add to this thread when more information becomes available.

I certainly will remember her with great fondness and grateful for the wonderful inspiration she has been to hundreds of people. She also was a great encourager of less experienced singers - me included

I regret I will not be able to be at the funeral as I am still living in China

Sad news indeed but a blessed relief as she was suffering so much,

She was taken into hospital early yesterday with pneumonia so she didn't linger for long.

I will post funeral details when we have them.

It's one of those cases where the outcome was kindest for her. She, like Col K, will never be forgotten by all who came across her.

Remember her with the joy of life she always seemed to have. She would be ashamed of us if we went into deep mourning for her.

Go and join that great festival in the sky and sing out true again.
RIP.

I read Sheila-In-China's post earlier and couldn't quite believe it, but all the same I felt that curious but entirely natural sense of relief. It sounds horrible, but with all the unbelievable suffering Theresa's been through this past while - well you know. Then I came back on line just now and the news is confirmed, so I guess I'll make number 27. I can only echo what Hazel said, she put it so well (>>Sad news indeed but a blessed relief as she was suffering so much<<) - says it all. That peace is what the doctor ordered, right?
But oh what a privilege it was to have known her, such an inspirational lady, such a life-affirming spirit, and such a powerful voice (and not just her singing!).
What a grand chorus line - Theresa, Johnny Collins, Barrie Finn and ColK !
RIP Theresa, we'll always luv ya.

Click on this link: Theresa then scroll down to the bottom, where Theresa is modelling a fetching number she picked up at the Getaway auction.
She is also on several other Shellback photos in that group, where she is always at the front.

God bless, Theresa.

I never met her, but heard so much about her from those who had. The thing that struck me the most, in recent times, is her courage. I was in awe of how she dealt with such a tragic disease. I admire that she did as much as possible before it got so bad and that she kept her spirit, enjoying the joke thread we had for her and all. What an incredible spirit was obvious even though we'd not met.

My condolences to her family and friends. I like Janie's idea, too. Enjoy singing freely now, Theresa.

Jim Mageean was once heard to say that there weren't any female shanty singers apart from Theresa!

Being given the opportunity of performing with her in the Shellbacks was a real privilege and always interesting, there was never a dull moment when she was around.

We are glad her suffering is at an end but so sorry that she is no longer with us. She will be truly missed.

Many, many times I sang in her shadow. many times she taught me harmonies. Many times I could belt out a song knowing Theresa was louder and more musical. Many times our husbands stood propping up the bar, watching a door or helping the singing chef. When I was widowed she brought me into the family of the Shellbacks. She has been in my life so long I cannot remember when we first met but I have missed her from the festivals and my life and feel poorer for the loss of her. May her voice have returned in full force so she can add guts to a heavenly choir.
God bless you Theresa. I love you.

That's me in green, next to Theresa in the second one down.
We first saw her at the Wrekin in 1990, when she sang a song we were impressed with. There's an old thread here that follows our search for the singer and the song, and then she came to us!
I'm so pleased we were able to meet her again and I'm glad she's out of pain, but she will be missed.

I am sitting here just grinning from ear to ear. And in every single picture I see of this fabulous person, so is about every other person. My grin is from looking at that beautiful, wee face and remembering how I felt each time I was around her. With no offense intended to any others beliefs let me say that I thank God I got to meet this amazing person and feel the happiness that being around her provided. If one can leave this earth, as we all must, and do so with such good feelings left behind as our Theresa did, then that is a life well lived. If I have a regret in all this, it is just that I won't be able to experience being around her again. But I take great joy and comfort in looking at those pictures and remembering how she was. And I just can't wipe this smile off my face.

I can imagine her and Barry sharing rememberances. Warning to their mates in Heaven: Don't try to compete when those two voices start. Just throw in some harmony, and move in for the smiles......you lucky dogs.......

At one point in the 2005 Getaway, there was a lull. At one end of the dining hall Amos was strumming his guitar and Theresa happened upon the scene. She listened for a moment and then shouted up the hall: Anyone got a song to go with this beat?

Peace is not something I associate with Theresa. If there was ever a lull in proceedings, she'd be sure to step up and start something happening. That's my first memory of her, before I even knew who she was, this fireball of a small person with a huge voice and heart. Her joy was not just in singing herself, but in bringing others forward so they too could know that feeling. I wish I could have known her longer, but it's a relief that her pain is over. I feel so lucky for the times we had. Thanks for the songs, Theresa.

Lost for words. A whirlwind of a character.

We were running a folk club at Upton Festival a few years back.
Theresa was there and so we expected a belter, but instead got a gentle silly little song about a man "who was so small". Even so, she couldn't stay in one place to sing it, but moved around the room singing a line to each and every one of us.

What is Dying?

I am standing on the sea shore
A ship at my side spreads her
white sails in the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I
stand and watch her until at last
she fades on the horizon.

Then someone at my side says
"There she has gone" -
Gone where?
Gone from my sight - that is all.
She is just as large in the mast,
hull and spars as she was
when she left my side.......

The diminished size
and total loss of sight
is in me, not in her,
and just at the moment when
someone at my side says
"She is gone"
others take up the glad shout
"There she comes".

And that is dying. An horizon is just the limit of our sight.

At a concert the other night the performer prefaced his song by telling this story:

A woman was dying of cancer and one day she told her husband of many years that she'd been thinking of how it says in the Bible that to God one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a single day. She said that she did the math and 80-85 years on that scale comes out to just about an hour.

A few minutes before she died, she whispered to her husband, "See you in an hour."

Glad she can now be with her loved ones and will be able to sing out once again. Watch out Heaven Captain Bloody Valiant's coming!!!!

Maggie and I only met her twice and one of those was at the funeral of another dear friend - We'll never forget her song about the Lion Tamer which has stayed with us all these years - only Theresa could sing it - No doubt she is singing as loudly as ever with all those friends who went ahead of her.
Rest (and sing) in peace

Strangely enough banjoman my sister (who liked Theresa immensely) and I were only discussing the Lion Tamer song yesterday ... and Titanic which I can remember Theresa belting out at the National, and encouraging all to participate in.

Oh dear, I came on MC for the first time in ages looking for one old friend and found another has passed.
I can't remember a time when Theresa wasn't at the heart of any festival singaround. She was someone I always enjoyed spending time with, and it was always quality time.
Captain Bloody Valiant was her song (in my mind), but I recall the Ironing Board Shanty and "I'll be no submissive wife". She was at the forefront of a group of very formidable ladies, but always with great humour and affection.

RIP Treasure.

Didn't know Theresa personally but saw her many times at Saddleworth festival originally with Firm Friends. Her and Bill camped next to me one year and they were a fab couple to talk to. Always a bubbly, lively lady and a great singer and a joy to see/hear each year.

Condolencies to her family and R.I.P Theresa and Bill.

Theresa promted the writing of Indian Summer by Pete Ryder. He never, ever sang that song without crediting Theresa with the raison d'etre. Why, is between Pete and Theresa. She could sing a third below my bass harmony and a fifth above my melody. She was good with hugs when you needed one too. Weeping here Theresa..........

So many people sharing memories of this grand-old-lady. She has left a big hole in the life of all of us who knew her.
There have been murmurings of a Memorial Concert and why not? (put me down for a ticket) but for the rest of this year why don't we all remember Theresa in the way she would like best.
At every festival we have connections with, let's persuade the organisers to nominate one of the Sing-a-Rounds as the "Theresa Tooley Memorial Sing-a-Round" and let's all sing our favourite songs that we sang with T. That way every-one can join in everywhere.
Pass the thought on.
Jim

It's a year now since we lost Theresa but, such was her impact on my life, that she is still almost constantly in my thoughts.

Perhaps this is what is really meant by life after death.

Certainly the spirit of Theresa will never die

I met Therese only the once - at the 2004 or 2005 Getaway - but I think of her often. Especially so, since the little Care Bear she sent me sits on a shelf I pass every day. This was a woman larger than life encased in a small frame that was scarcely large enough to hold her. It will be a long time before I forget her, if ever.

This is just to send birthdat wishes to Theresa wherever she is now.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
