I heard from Theresa today that she has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, or to be more precise Progressive Bulbar Palsy. So her problems have not been , as we thought, the result of a stroke.

I know her friends will want to know this although I'm sure that Theresa is still trying to put a brave face on things.

She will certainly eventually lose her ability to sing and is waiting to have a tube inserted in her stomach so she can take in liquids.

She finds talking difficult so anyone wishing to contact her should do so via email. PM ME IF YOU WANT DETAILS

Thanks for posting this, nutty. I got an e-mail from Theresa this morning. We had the great pleasure of having several Catters here at the house for a sing around three years ago. Colin, Theresa, Noreen, and Sussex Carole among others were here to share songs with me and the Gospel Messengers. Theresa was a special joy to us (as was Colin.) My wife Ruth and I and the Gospel Messengers hold Theresa warm in our hearts and have been keeping her in prayer.

I'm gutted to hear this news, too. Lovely lady in the truest sense of both terms. A real joy, a belter of a songstress and communicator and wonderful company on that magic trip to the U.S. in 2005. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
Love and hugs

I too have wonderful memories of Teresa and her voice. I remember particularly when Amos was strumming a lively beat and Teresa shouted to us all, Does anyone have a song to go with that?

Thanks for your lovely spirit, Teresa; you give a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

May this diagnosis be a passing thing and never as severe as feared.

Theresa is one of my oldest and dearest friends who is guilty of introducing me to this crazy place where I have made such other good friends too.
There is really nothing more I can add to the wishes that have already expressed here and I know will continue to flood in from those who her larger than life personality and voice have touched throughout the years.

A few years ago I started a thread looking for a song and a singer we heard in 1990, when we went to Britain. We just knew it was a bag lady song but no-one could identify the singer or the song.

We didn't find her at the time but then she turned up at the Auckland folk festival with the Shellbacks in 2006.
It was Theresa!
There is a photo of the catters there, in the events pics here.
Lots of love Theresa, from NZ.

Theresa was the inspiration for the first shanty I wrote (hurriedly)in 2001 for the bad shirts and shanties day at Whitby - she'd just won the Saltburn shanty competition, and I was trying to think of something to sing when it was my turn that wouldn't already have been sung. I've had to adopt a similar strategy each year since.

SING 'EM LOUD - SHANTY SESSION PLAN B

I'm feeling sad and so forlorn
Sing 'em loud
Can't help the gender I was born
Sing 'em loud

We weedy women high and shrill
Sing 'em loud
Can't compete with Jim or Bill
Sing 'em loud

While they are belting out each word
Sing 'em loud
We women struggle to be heard
Sing 'em loud

But there is one who breaks the rule she
Sings 'em loud
Her name it is Theresa Tooley, she
Sings 'em loud

Hope you can keep singing for a while yet!

Kitty

Theresa, I only met you at the Getaway, but I'm not likely to forget THAT experience! I started singing 'Fire Down Below' (the one with the hula girls) and I heard this deep, strong, beautiful harmony. It took me a while to figure out it was coming out of this little teeny woman.

Certainly there is joy in music, but being loved is pretty damned good, and you are. Enjoy your friends.

I have great memories of her singing at both the 2005 Getaway and at the 2007 Towersey Barn sings, where I got to know her a bit. I was extremely horored that she asked me for the words to learn to a song I sang at Towersey, the Great Lakes shanty "Leave Her Laddies, Leave Her", which I did. I was hoping I'd get to hear her sing it some day, maybe at Getaway, which she had originally hoped to attend. Looks like I might have to sing it for her there instead.

A great lady and a wonderful singer of all sorts of things. Someone I wish only the best in getting through her illness.

My first memories of Theresa are probably at Fylde ff and John Booker drinking with Bill Tooley

I seem to have known Theresa for ever and she was always the first to start singing and loved to join in and get people going

She had a spot at Barnsley singaround last Easter and ended up singing with a group of lovely singers including Sussex Carole and I think Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner

She was I believe "gutted" at not making Saddleworth ff 2008 being virtually on her doorstep

Well time for a few more pints yet Theresa so lets see you around!!

So sad to hear this news. Even tho i Don't know Theresa on a personal level i saw her many times at Saddleworth. This year was my 10th visit to Saddleworth Festival and remarked to a friend later that i hadn't seen Theresa Tooley this year. So used to seeing her around the festival with that lovely smile and singing voice either solo or in earlier years with the fabulous 'Firm Friends'.

I can remember one occasion when Theresa and Bill used to camp at the festival pitching their tent next to mine. What kind & lovely neihgbours they were too!

Truly wish you well Theresa and pray they can get you as well as possible. Look forward to seeing you at Saddlewoth in the future.

Best regards, Vin

I have always valued your friendship. You have on many occaisions given me words of advice and encouragement. My first memory of you was {as I have told you in the past} of a night in Warwick Festival. You were singing " Bully in the Alley "......AS only YOU could.
You have had to bear a few Hard Knocks in recent years.
Now another one.I hope fate will now ease the burden by giving you the chance of making whatever improvement in health that can be made.
We all know you have the "Spirit" to get on with life. But let's all pray you get a little help.
