Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: 8_Pints Date: 02 Jan 10 - 01:49 PM Jim Mageean was once heard to say that there weren't any female shanty singers apart from Theresa! Being given the opportunity of performing with her in the Shellbacks was a real privilege and always interesting, there was never a dull moment when she was around. We are glad her suffering is at an end but so sorry that she is no longer with us. She will be truly missed. Bob & Sue vG |

Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Menolly Date: 02 Jan 10 - 04:30 PM Many, many times I sang in her shadow. many times she taught me harmonies. Many times I could belt out a song knowing Theresa was louder and more musical. Many times our husbands stood propping up the bar, watching a door or helping the singing chef. When I was widowed she brought me into the family of the Shellbacks. She has been in my life so long I cannot remember when we first met but I have missed her from the festivals and my life and feel poorer for the loss of her. May her voice have returned in full force so she can add guts to a heavenly choir. God bless you Theresa. I love you. Gillian |
Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Little Robyn Date: 02 Jan 10 - 05:03 PM Very sorry to hear this. Here are some photos from the Auckland Folk Festival 2006 when the Shellbacks came halfway around the world. That's me in green, next to Theresa in the second one down. We first saw her at the Wrekin in 1990, when she sang a song we were impressed with. There's an old thread here that follows our search for the singer and the song, and then she came to us! I'm so pleased we were able to meet her again and I'm glad she's out of pain, but she will be missed. Farewell Theresa. Robyn |

I've got such wonderful memories of her - singing everywhere she went, even in the chippy queue! And the week in the house we all shared at Whitby was just fantastic! Singing till late every night with her leading the way. Saddleworth hasn't been the same for me since she stopped coming because of her ill health. I'm so glad I knew her, and could count her as a good friend. Lots of love Theresa, Ali xx |

Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Big Mick Date: 02 Jan 10 - 08:08 PM I am sitting here just grinning from ear to ear. And in every single picture I see of this fabulous person, so is about every other person. My grin is from looking at that beautiful, wee face and remembering how I felt each time I was around her. With no offense intended to any others beliefs let me say that I thank God I got to meet this amazing person and feel the happiness that being around her provided. If one can leave this earth, as we all must, and do so with such good feelings left behind as our Theresa did, then that is a life well lived. If I have a regret in all this, it is just that I won't be able to experience being around her again. But I take great joy and comfort in looking at those pictures and remembering how she was. And I just can't wipe this smile off my face. I can imagine her and Barry sharing rememberances. Warning to their mates in Heaven: Don't try to compete when those two voices start. Just throw in some harmony, and move in for the smiles......you lucky dogs....... Mick |

Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Ebbie Date: 02 Jan 10 - 09:36 PM GREAT photos. I have recounted this before but just in case... At one point in the 2005 Getaway, there was a lull. At one end of the dining hall Amos was strumming his guitar and Theresa happened upon the scene. She listened for a moment and then shouted up the hall: Anyone got a song to go with this beat? |

Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Ross Campbell Date: 03 Jan 10 - 12:06 AM Peace is not something I associate with Theresa. If there was ever a lull in proceedings, she'd be sure to step up and start something happening. That's my first memory of her, before I even knew who she was, this fireball of a small person with a huge voice and heart. Her joy was not just in singing herself, but in bringing others forward so they too could know that feeling. I wish I could have known her longer, but it's a relief that her pain is over. I feel so lucky for the times we had. Thanks for the songs, Theresa. Ross |

Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Splott Man Date: 03 Jan 10 - 10:33 AM Lost for words. A whirlwind of a character. We were running a folk club at Upton Festival a few years back. Theresa was there and so we expected a belter, but instead got a gentle silly little song about a man "who was so small". Even so, she couldn't stay in one place to sing it, but moved around the room singing a line to each and every one of us. RIP Splott Man |
Subject: RE: Obit: Theresa Tooley (Treaties) 2 Jan 2010 From: Dame Pattie Smith EPNS Date: 03 Jan 10 - 10:51 AM What is Dying? I am standing on the sea shore A ship at my side spreads her white sails in the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand and watch her until at last she fades on the horizon. Then someone at my side says "There she has gone" - Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in the mast, hull and spars as she was when she left my side....... The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her, and just at the moment when someone at my side says "She is gone" others take up the glad shout "There she comes". And that is dying. An horizon is just the limit of our sight. Bishop Brent |
