Everyone has different hearing with volume sensitivity, frequency strengths and weakness and overall timbre differences so the same ear phone will not sound the same to another person.

The best headphone I have is a 18 year old JVC gold. Huge but amazing. I found a earphone that produces a simlar response.
It came with an Insignia portable HD radio. It out performs all other earbuds and earphones I have tried (5 in all). I haven't tried any of the $200 and up phones like Stenhauser because the price is absurd.

A $20 noise cancellation head phone (50% off) from Rite Aid drugstore is the runner up.

For $35 if you can find an Insignia portable HD radio you whould buy it. All the HD stations are free and sound twice as good as normal stereo FM with no noise whatsoever.

I found stations you can;t get without an HD radio. One played songs that were really great, that is until they announced their name "this is WBIG HD the REALLY OLD OLDIES Station"
hmmmph
It wasn't that good afterall. But the ear phones, supurb.

Regardless the kind of headphone I dislike any but those that fit over one's ears like ear muffs. This kind.

Yeah they can be best overall, but thats why I was amazed that a ear phone sounded almost as good as the best headphone. THis no descript black ear phone beats all the fancy looking ear phones that all sound muffled in comparison. The highs are really high and the bass is realistic.

I like my yellow ones.. no-one tries to steal yellow earbuds... :D

Being partially deaf in one ear, most earphones don't really sound different to me, but I must admit my nice yellow Gummi's are pretty good for what is a mid price range for ear buds... The raspberry coloured ones were great too til the cat chewed on them.

I don't like the earmuff types for several reasons - firstly, I have a small head and no matter how adjustable they are, they slide off a lot or get tangled in my hair... secondly, I found I got a lot of sound bleeding in from outside because the earmuff bits are flat and my ears are not. Thirdly, they're not so discreet for surreptitious use.

I can't keep the buds in my ears!

Small head? Hah you don;t know what a real small head is about. To wear headphones I have to add cushions so the phones don;t drop below my jaw. I have to wear my 9 year olds hat if I want a hat to fit. My head is so small they don't make halloween masks to fit me.
My head is 1.6 nose lengths high.

I like the ear phone since it reminds me of how things used to sound.
Things like the shocking sound of snares in percussion and other metallic instuments that are struck. IT sounds better than being in the studio.

I don't like earbuds, though they are what I've been stuck with in order to keep my mp3/radio device in a small case that travels easily in my pocketbook. I bought an inexpensive pair of Sony earphones that sound find and work for when I'm listening to a recorded book and working around the house, etc.

My best pair of headphones are high-end Technics that were clearance priced ridiculously low, for about $3 each at Fry's (they were normally over $100) about 10 years ago. I bought them for the kids also, and we all still use them regularly. The padded ears keep the sound in, they're very comfortable, and they have a very long cord so you can plug into the television if you want and sit a dozen feet away, etc. I think someone made a mistake marking them down, but no one at the checkout register challenged the price.

The Shure SE range is good, from the HD 110 (which I use with my iPod) to the $500 SE 530s (which I haven't heard, but which a hi-fi bore friend assures me are the mutt's nuts).

Call me mean and penny pinching but I have this aversion to spending more than £10 on earphones that the cat will chew on or the normal everyday useage will destroy, especially when they come as Christmas cracker gifts now...

Oddly enough, the most expensive set of buds I ever bought were the quickest to break - without feline aid. The bit that surrounds the mesh just popped off and wouldn't go back on, leaving the wiring exposed and falling out.

I used to find that earbuds invariably either deafened me, sounded horrible, or fell off and out. I recently became a devotee of the Sandisk Sansa series of mp3 players and I think their ear buds are above average, in stickability and sound quality.
For a triple guarantee of quality of sound, never coming off your ears, and never making you deaf, I recommend the Sony earphones which come with little plastic hooks for over your ears. The speaker is held facing forward, pushing the sound into your ear but not plugging it, I think it is much less likely to damage your hearing, and you can pick up ambient noise as well, which in an office environment I often want to do.

As I have a constant problem with eczema in both ears, anything that actually goes in the ears just sets up more itching. So earphones and earbuds are equally unpleasant, and I try to stick with headphones, however badly they mess my hair.

I think I still have my Sansa earbuds here, I replaced them with a set on a lanyard so I could wear it around my neck while out walking. I'll have to see if I can find them and give them a try again. I do like the Sansa players (mine is a Fuze, and I added a 4 gig SD card to it. My son just got an 8gig card for his. Very nice.)

Sansa sounds interesting,

To be honest the best reason I like these no name ear phones is that they do not trigger tinnitus. My huge JVC HA-D990 will make my ears ring while the earphones do not. The ear phones just sort of rest in the ear and require manipulation for full sound but its worth hearing so well without ringing later. They also help each ear sound equally well, when one ear is only half as sensitive as the other.

It must be a matter of full spectrum sound without too much power.

I got another insignia portable HD radio set, just for the headphones just in case these get damaged. The radio is not only tiny and extremely rugged but essential if one wants the most out of npr.

btw
since npr made all their budget cuts, thier quality has suffered. The editors are not fact checking or the announcers are putting decimal points in the wrong spot or the journalists are not asking the right insightful questions, but there is drop in the quality of their programming. Repeating thier programs up to 3 times a day to fill the day is another matter.

I think they should do a deal with pacifica and get some wonderful interviews with our remaining national treasures. You know, some of the old coots that are our living history.

I'm using the new Sansa clip+ which can be got with 8GB internal and you can supplement with a micro SD of 16 GB or greater. The little clip+ will also take in FM radio and record it at acceptable quality in STEREO. It's a fantastic little unit. It has a minimal screen so it is pretty much only for audio but it does very good.

btw i agree that npr may have suffered slightly due to creeping commercialization, but with Fresh Air, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and On The Media, and many other shows, it is still far and away the best radio going in the US, and Pacifica is worth keeping as a West Coast relic, but it is to the left wing what FOX is to the right.

I agree--Fresh Air, Diane Rehm, Wait Wait, those a great. And I have quite a few others I always listen to that may not be in all markets. I use the podcasts more now than I used to, now that I can download them to listen to later (with the mp3 player, that is. I had one that didn't work well and gave up on them until the Fuze came along).

Man now I gotta google a Sansa clip +, since recording is something I really need.
Ear phones that don't aggravate tinnitus is something that could be a highly desireable marketing approach. Get Shatner to do the commercial since he has as bad a case of tinnitus imaginable.

((I hope the SANSA CLIP + doesn't turn out to be some form of ammo clip used exclusively by terrorists that would go on my permanent Google search history and NSA file. To be safe I'll go to Amazon first, once bitten twice shy))

I would never compare FOX with Pacifica even as theoretical opposites since FOX preaches fear and suspicion to feed every form of blood shed and predujudice against Americans, be it racial, religious or educational. It is simply incomparable. Deliberate FOX falsehoods are aimed at the lowest common denominator by a ruling banking class to divide and conquer. This kind of savagery against America is in an extreme regieme of its own. IF Fox were placed on the scales of fairness and justice I know of nothing that would balance those scales.

RADIO LAB.org is a fascinating yet humorous science program that can be found on the web easier than on radio.

The Sansa Clip will play FLAC files if you download these from the torrent tracker. I use headphones that I bought from Tescos in the UK for £4.99, with loudness of 112db - so great for in flight listening!

I have some hearing problems now but I have been very satisfied with a pair of klipsch earbuds. These earbuds provide a clarity of tones and sounds and have enabled me to understand words to songs far better than other headsets and even with natural listening. They are not cheap but are also not all that expensive. I think I paid around $75.

WOW I got the Sansa clip robomatic suggested and it is the device I have been looking for for 13 years. The FM recording function is so cool. I still have to wait to let it save at the end but it seems fairly quick.

I have never heard of flak files. whats the deal? I ll google it.

I am about to install mp3 downloads into the clip.

With new glasses this new technology will go a bit quicker. my problem is often a tiny microscopic link that I don;\'t see to complete a download until a half hour later.

Thanks robo

My ears are still good and not ringing too much after using ear phones. With 30% loss in the left ear I can nudge the left earphone a bit and everything is equal. THis is like a blast from the past.

yeah I know this miniature MP3 player thing is like ancient technology compared to an i phone with an app to rule the world and every other damned thing, but I don't travel much anyway. If I'm not near a desktop, I'm driving.

Nor do I travel well, I'm like boiled lobster, .

* I tried getting chinese food delivery of lobster once and it was worse than a rubber chicken. I don't recommend the lobster to be delivered.

I have extremely sensitive ears. I cannot bear for them to be touched or covered. I was traumatised by Army doctors trying to figure out why I didn't speak when I was 5. Unpleasant investigations and treatments.

Ear buds are too big and hurt the canal and phones put too much pressure on the ears.

I use these in ear headphones.

The headband is loose and the ear pieces do not press too hard. Still can only do it for so long before the sensation of that something in my ears maddens me.
