I am experincing some snow but I don't think it will accumulaye largely because the high winds are blowing it away.

I hate to think of what it is like up north from here.

It snowed all night in PA NY and NJ were blanketed all night and there is still snowing in places but the winds are up to 60 MPH.

The are calling it a snow hurricane, worse than a blizzard.

It's about 34 degrees F. at 42d Street and Broadway in the heart of Manhattan. The rain is coming down in sheets and the pedestrians huddling under umbrellas or hunched against the wind cannot get where they are going fast enough. It is a bustle of insulated minds in pain, banging against each other like gamma rays.

And even Pismo Beach in Central California looks a little cooler than usual.

Even San Diego's beaches are a little overcast.

2-25-10 Accucast:

"On top of creating whiteout and blizzard conditions across parts of the Northeast, high winds accompanying a strong nor'easter will be forceful enough to cut power and cause damage to property.

From northeastern Pennsylvania and northwestern New Jersey through much of upstate New York, winds will whip snow around for several hours, lowering visibility to a quarter of a mile, or even less. This will nearly shut down travel through the area.

Strong onshore winds in eastern New England, where mostly rain will fall today, will bring above-normal tides, coastal flooding and beach erosion. Wind gusts could reach up to hurricane force along the coast, while gusts to 60 mph are possible farther inland.

Meanwhile, strong offshore winds south of the storm will lead to lower bay and estuary levels in the mid-Atlantic region."

My weather program just alerted to the high winds forecast (up to 60 MPH). I guess we will miss the snow, but I always worry about wind, as I have an Elm tree on its last legs limbs. We lost the center section in the snow, and the crew who cut it up called it in as a hazard....it's 'on the list' to be cut/trimmed. If two of its limbs come off, the power line right in front of my house is in danger.

The link to the weather.com does not ask for a login for me.

Anyway it seems Mother Nature is sparing the DC area from the brunt of the storm. It has shifted northward and it is predicted to be a real Blizzard with high winds.

Another 5 or more inches?

The snow has melted to the point that I can see a few patches of grass in the yard.

The schools finally opened on time Monday.

The roadsides have been cleared but there is an ugly aftermath.

The filthy looking roadside snowbanks have mangled up road signs, mailboxes and shopping carts protruding like mammoth bones on the tundra.

Surprise. They are warning about another 5 or more more inches.

I'm glad I'm not commuting anywhere these days. It looks clear until you reach a spot where lanes narrow, or a turn lane is blocked.

A 4 lane road that narrows to 3...or 2½... for even 100 yards is just a 2½ lane road with miles of parking lot. We found one of those yesterday. Took 15 minutes to cover what is usually a 3 minute trip.

Today's snow fizzled out. Maybe an inch or two.

Combined with what we already had on the ground it was enough to keep the schools closed tomorrow.

I told my wife, a teacher, we might as well give up on this year and start over again in the fall.

Hey Nancy.... you need to have connections! ...and put out milk & cookies hot coffee. see what you can get?

They cleared our entire block and kept going....not sure how far.

(Yeah... I know...it makes no sense how they allocate snow removal resources...but it sure relieved the stresses in MY area)

Gee... we still don't have much. And even though it has been snowing steadily since before dawn (Moncton, New Brunswick), there's only about two inches. And it's not staying on the pave much. Temps to be 0 to 3C all week.

Hey, Maeve, thanks for updating folks! Yes, I did make it to Maine, though getting out of my street was a chancy business. Anyhow, I had a lovely time there (sans snow!), and it was great to see -- and hear! -- Maeve and many other good buddies. Dan and I both had a fine time, despite the long drive. The drive home always seems particularly tedious, but we made it to his house in PA last night about 10 pm, and I got home to Maryland about noon today. Getting into my driveway was challenging, but I made it! Still LOTS of snow around here! ...and more expected today and tonight, though not much, and mixed with rain. Ugh.

1 to 3 inches is what we're hearin' so no reason to panic...

I spent 3 hours yesterday diggin' out the 200 foot drive way to thr speck house that I am right in the middle of sellin'... Most of it hadn't been touched since the snow before last so was deep... But at least if we get a phone call from our buyer this morning from DC sayin' he wants to come up (down) and see his house he'll be able to drive to the door...

I'm going to be checkin' into the snow blower... The part that kinda concerns me is that seein' as the the driveway goes down from our house and barns it seems that I would have to work backwards or I'd be driving over and thru snow with the tractor before the snow blower got there... In a deep snow that definately woudln't work 'er the tractor would be stuck in no time with snow banked uo against the front of it...

Got mail today but the garbage man is nowhere to be seen and there is no place to put out the garbage.

We are still looking at 6' snowbanks along every street and road with 10' High plies at the intersections.

Another Alberta Clipper is headed this way for a Monday night snowfall. Hopefully no too deep, a few inches but hell, we are getting toughened up and ready for it.

I had to go to Arlington today - I could see the aftermath of DC's "Snowmaggeddon". Incredible - I saw cars still buried up to their roofs and in some cases you could only see the very tops of the parking meters! Traffic was a mess and heading back to Richmond we got on Route 1 and it was paralyzed, so we decided to try some side streets. Well those side streets were still snow covered - DEEP snow covered. A truck ahead of us got stuck and it took around 20 minutes and three people pushing (being all dressed up for a business meeting we couldn't help) to get it going and unblock the street. Richmond's snow was pretty tame in comparison, although of course it still brought everything to a screeching halt and decimated the grocery store shelves.

We live on a street that doesn't have sidewalks. Not sure why...there are sidewalks starting about a block & ½ away, but there's an area of about 5-6 'blocks', criss-crossed by 6-7 streets, where they just didn't bother. My street is a major route for kids to walk to a couple of neighborhood school, and *shrug*...they just walk in the street....and a lot of them with an 'attitude' (4-5 abreast, reluctant to get out of the way of cars).

Well, it does save ME the work of clearing walks.

So here's Friday: the federal and Arlington county governments have reopened, schools and such remain closed, and the public transit system is still only partially functional (limited bus service; subway only to underground and a limited number of outdoor stations). My Metro stop is above ground and shut, and I'm telecommuting.

And here's a wish for the able-bodied neighbors who haven't bothered to shovel their sidewalks: may the melting snow flow merrily into your basements!

There were 5 and 6 footers on Criagslist, not too far away.

We officially got 20 more inches. We are up to 79.9" for the season, breaking the previous record of 62.5" by 17.4" We are 4" shy of the record for February.

We dug out today and it was not too bad. Not near as bad as I thought it would be.

The street is clear and dry. Some guy had a Bobcat stashed in his garage and he did the street. A gigantic loader looking thing with a plow did the road.

I don't believe much is open for business so we just stayed home.

School is closed for the week.

The postman must be buried in a drift somewhere.

We got out today... But not without one wild, white-knuckle ride down the last 300 feet on the driveway (straight down, BTW) on the tractor with the front bucket tilted all the way down with so much pressure on the blade that the front tires (steering) were off the ground a good 4 inches and the rear blade adjused down toward the starboard side... Lotta chewin' goin' on there... Didn't break anything but that sumabichin' driveway's stranglehold on our freedom!!!

Life is good...

Tell, ya'll what... I just might look into that snowblower that Sawz found... Maybe a 5 or 6 footer, tho...

It's bright & sunny, but chilly. No buses running, and all govt. offices closed, as crews try to catch up. It's possible to get about on main streets, and many side streets, but not always easy to park anywhere, as that's where the snow was put. By Friday, it will be... ummm... 'better'. I'd wait until I got a phone call thru and confirmation of meeting.

The last thing I did before it started to snow yesterday was to get a crisp pile of tens from the ATM, for the nice people who come around and offer to dig me out, because I know that whatever they ask will be cheaper than the co-pay for an ER visit-

It has slacked up here but there is one last hopefully short blast coming.

The record for a single winter in MD was 62.5" in 1996.

Four hours ago it was up to 77.3" for the season.

This is the worst season for me and everybody I know. The big problem is it did not melt between the first two storms in January.

It is going to be a long time before this melts.

The snow is waist deep so having to use a crutch or a staff is actually utilitarian and helps balance in slippery spots. Shoveling on crutches, cutting branches etc is not that hard.

Subject: RE: BS: Blizzard coming to DC area?

Yeah, well, winding down it may be, but lemme tell ya, it's still miserable out there. And it is still actually snowing -- the blowing and drifting is just an added bonus. Looks to me like we've had 10-12 inches this go-round, but it really is hard to tell because of all the drifting. And it's cold, too. Every shovelfull gets blown back in my face after I fling it as high as I can to reach the top of the existing pile. And maybe someday I'll own a warm hat that doesn't slip down over my eyes every 2-3 minutes.   Piss and moan, piss and moan....

So Phase 1-B is now complete: I have a path to the street, for whatever good that does. Street is once again completely impassable, and I guess we've slipped down to the bottom of the plowing priority list again. For a while last night I thought I might actually be able to get out on Thursday to start off for snow-free Maine, but right now it's not looking too good. We shall see.

The only good news (other than that I still have power) is that under today's layer of snow I found the newspapers for Saturday through today, obviously delivered in the brief interval between last night's plowing and today's impassability. No mail yet, though -- not even bills and ads.

My son & I have cleared the walk from our downstairs door to the drive, and an area behind the car, which is parked almost to the street. So...it won't be TOO hard to get onto the street...whenever the street is worth getting onto. Shoveling was 'relatively' easier than last time, except for the higher piles to toss it over.
As Nancy says, the snow is a bit lighter, and not building up so fast. I think the worst is over as far as accumulation....digging out the whole state? HA!
Governor O'Malley just said ALL counties are 'red' for a state of emergency...and *grin*...he told folks to STOP demanding that their streets be scraped down to the pavement.

Just heard that this season's total snowfall has surpassed the all-time record with 54.9". So the winter of 2009-2010 has had even more than the famous winter of 1898-99. And there's several more weeks of winter left to go...

Actual snowfall is tapering off now, but it's kinda hard to tell, because there's still so much wind it's all blowing around.

National weahter service says: "BLIZZARD WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 PM EST THIS EVENING"

It is snowing like hell and looking at the radar map it is just rotating in place and not moving off to the east or northeast as usual for any storm system. More moisture is coming ashore in New England and turning into snow while the whole thing is circulating CCW.

Even if it stopped right now it would take a week to get back to normal. I don't have any front steps anymore. Not a damned thing is moving out there.

Maybe this was what those rumored secret Pentagon briefings were about. I heard 36" Others said 48". Looks like if there were warnings like this it would not be kept secret.

I am wondering about people with oil heat or LP gas heat. How are they getting deliveries? I have Natural Gas heat.

I am watching TV video of guys with shovels AND a small snowblower removing snow from school roofs. Someone is concerned.

Flat roofs are a real concern, even though this snow is lighter than the last one.
