Hi All
It's that time of year again. I am assured by Dal that he will not be running out of ale this year. He bought in 30 barrels last year, which just lasted and I understand that he has contingency plans, should the need arrise. Slight change of plan, as my selfish son has chosen to get married on that Friday, JB will be hosting Friday night, with Ruff N Reddy hosting Friday afternoon

I went to Rochester the other day to secure a stay during the sweeps and on the way back by train I saw a Submarine on the Medway looking alone and fore-lone. Is it open to visitors has I may include it when I come to Sweeps?

Its not open to visitors mate.
There is one in the Dockyard (HMS Ocelot)that is, alongside a destroyer (HMS Cavalier) both of WW2 vintage. The one you saw from the train at Strood has been there for some time and is ex Russian navy.

Simon - I think you've got it wrong surely as I don't believe there's a friday afternoon session at Sweeps in the Good Intent. Don't you mean Sunday afternoon? The timetable looks like this I suspect :-

Friday 30/04/2010 from about 20:45 to close singaround/session with John Barden
Saturday 01/05/2010 from 12:30 to 14:30 (but it WILL continue, bet your boots) and 20:45 to close as above with John Barden.
Sunday 02/05/2010 from 12:30 to 14:30 singaround/session with Ruff & Reddy. 15:00 to 20:00 - floor spots and guests with Gastove. 20:45 to close singaround/ session with John Barden inclusing a few songs from festival guest Mike Nicholson.
Monday 03/05/2010 from 12:30 to falling over singaround/session with Ruff and Reddy.

John Barden

Why think less of Simon? The wishes of the host(s) should be honoured without judgement. Remember it is Karen and Dal's place. Maybe they don't want be dragged into politics.

Nothing stopping people from attending, nothing stopping people from leaving if BNP supporters show up. There's plenty going on elsewhere.

PLEASE don't let another thread be sucked into this political stewing pot!!!!

I have missed SO MUCH folk and Morris since my ban last October - I am just REALLY looking forward to the whole scene again - all of you fantastic people, the singers, musicians, dancers, publicans etc.

We do this because it is enjoyable, social and is a way of getting away from the crap that the majority of us experience in everyday life within the system.

MUSIC is above all, the one thing that should be joining us ALL together.

My views are well known. I will NOT enter into any politics on The Cat, and I really wish that this approach be more widely adopted. If people want to debate or air their political diferences, could they please do it face to face, in a pub and leave the rest of us to enjoy the friendship and music that makes Folk such a great place to be!!!!

Kev the Clogs

PS - goes without saying, I and Dilligaf will see you there on one, two or three days, at some point.

RBotob was a name I adopted to save typing "Richard Bridge on the other browser". I have not seen any twats nicking it yet, but I suppose it's only a matter of time.

Like it or not the attempts by the BNP to hijack traditional English folk music and song makes it a political topic.

I believe that fascists should be alienated and ostracised. In this, I believe that my position is the one of principle.

And with any luck, now that their internal squabbles have revealed internal venality and undermined any claim that they could represent those sick of corruption (not to mention revealing internal complaints that they were "too racist") their alienation will result.

The only racism I have experienced at Rochester has been constant anti-Irish remarks, such as "good session - no Irish stuff" or "do something Irish - yeah, go and tarmac the road!" "The Irish stole their music from us" This is from the people who claim to be anti-racist! The only black faces I ever see are morris dancers who blacken their faces like the old Black & White minstrels!

That's why I won't be going any more.

With an attitude like that, it's probably just as well you won't be going!

This thread is, I believe, entitled "Good Intent Sweeps". The sessions at The Good Intent during Sweeps are run by either John Barden or Ruff 'n' Reddy (who I play with).

John runs very open sessions, which include Irish stuff. If my memory serves me well, he actually does some Irish stuff himself. As for Ruff 'n' Reddy, we are also open to a wide range of music, and we do a number of Irish songs and tunes ourselves. There may be more, but I can think of three Irish performers who regularly attend The Good Intent for our bi-monthly singarounds, and several more who come during Sweeps.

As for blackened faces, the clue may be in the word "sweeps"!

I suspect that you're either a troll or a professional umbrage-taker!

Oh! I forgot to mention that we always have a cracking time together at The Good Intent during Sweeps, which is what it's all about. Leave your negativity/paranoia (or whatever it is!) at the door and you'd be more than welcome. Then you can see and hear for yourself!

The blackened faces of morris dancer's are supposed to represent "Black Moors" and has nothing to do with sweeps. I was only pointing out that the only racist remarks that I heard were anti-Irish. There was no waving of BNP flags, I did not even see any BNP supporters. BUT these remarks WERE made. As an Irish personn living in this country They made me feel uncomfertable. I am one of the Irish performers that you mention. The remark about "tarmac the road" was particularly offensive and was directed at a friend of mine. The person who made the remark posts to this thread.

The unsustantiated claim of distant Irish provenance should not automaticaly give people open licence to ridicule Irish people.

My point is not so much about taking the piss out of Irish people. I've put up with English people doing that all my life . It is about the constant paranoia and hypocracy demonstrated by certain people on this and other Threads

Incidently this is an entry from surnamesdb.com
BARDEN This surname, widely recorded in English Church Registers from the mid 16th Century, is of Anglo-Saxon origin.

Finally, you seem to be showing all the signs of paranoia and hypocracy that you accuse other people of, is that why you hide behind a GUEST identity? I always sign who I am. Try it some day.

Back on thread - as I said I agree with Kev the Cloggs, Sweeps and certainly The Good Intent are fun places to be.

However, I think a case can be made for restricting the amount of Irish song and tunes at a session. It tends to take over (particularly with at least one tenor banjo player I can think of), and at the Sweeps' festival that would be at odds with the core of the event. Balance is what is needed in a session -some songs, some tunes, some from here and some from there (rather like people) so long as none advance offensive proposals or espouse offensive causes (again like people). We are lucky usually to have some wonderful Irish singers at the GI sessions, and there have frequently been specific "Irish sessions" and "Mixed tunes" sessions, often elsewhere but sometimes round the GI fire.

For those interested: Nordic racial paganism

I've always been a bit cautious of Pagan Morris, not because I don't like Pagans or people being imaginative with traditions, but because of the political ideology of some Norse inspired Paganism which can *sometimes* have the above 'racial purity' overtones thus making it very appealing to white supremacists. However on just looking up the MySpace of Wolf's Head & Vixen I was much reassured on seeing FAF listed in their top friends. Especially as this side black's up. Good job lads and lasses of Wolf's Head & Vixen. Hope to see you folks sometime.

Once upon a time WH&V also had a spectacular musical sound. They beat me to "heavy metal mandolin" by several years. They may be getting back to that as they have a very able young guitarist who when I last saw him was playing sort-of-metal riffs on the bottom 3 strings in a drop D tuning.

This political nonesense is doing my head in its spread to the other sweeps thread has well.

Look at the trouble it caused last year at Knockholt it ruined the build up on Mudcat caused me and others to fall out and makes people awkward towards each other upon meeting at events.

Once on the field at Knockholt it caused needless worry and concern in some cases to the folk who started the damn thing off in the first place.

Beer Music and Fun is what I associate with Sweeps not political shit.

Yet I am some what puzzled of where the Indian dancers came from clearly they been performing in some part of the Sweeps and then turned up in the GI and bag pipe and dancers joined forces to create a great dance routine to a noise that turned your eye lids inside out but it was all very good regardless and memorable .

The term red Indians is not used in the USA. Native Americans is not good enough but will serve when referring to more than one tribe. Better not to speak about them as a whole group but as specific tribe using the correct title for that tribe. Least that can be done to show respect for groups of people disenfranchised and institutionalised by a white supremacist government.

Why is a carrot more orange than an orange?

Carrots were originally purplish blue but were selectively bred to get the orange colour to impress the dutch king. An early example of genetic engineering. There were no chillies, garlic or rice in India. These were all introduced by europeans. There were no rabbits in England. St Patrick brought guinnes to Ireland.

One of the above is false!

PS who's got my plectrum?

I believe plectrums also were originally purplish blue, but with the advent of guitars of garish colour it was decided that plectrum makers had to keep up with the times and branch out into other shades. Perhaps we should start a "What is a traditional plectrum?" thread.

They are not only used for cooking the ladies use them for costume jewelry.
in regards to culinary uses Im somewhat surprised Richard has never used them in his lovely Knockholt Tangines whereby he uses Apricots.

Apricots are for baby apes and has such should be left alone.

metcheck saying Saturday looking a bit better and Sunday pretty awful in the morning

And it is going to be cold.

the Observer Book of Morris and other Folk Dance. Found a medieval woodcut image of dancers (public domain) for the front cover / short descriptions of different species of Morris (Cotswold, Border, Molly, Rapper, etc.) and filled it with pages to complete.

left page is blank for photo or sketch

right page is printed with following (including lines to write on):

Date observed ______________

Name (of group, side, team i.e. Gong Scourers)___________

Species (type of Morris team i.e. Border, Rapper, Clog)

Natural Habitat (geographic location – home patch)

Migratory Pattern (location at time of observation)

Plumage (description of kit, clothes, tatters, face paint, props, etc.)

Display (description of dances, songs and instruments observed)

Notes (number of dancers, male, female or mixed group. etc.)

I made an A5 book, printed it out at work and paid for the copy of 16 pages at 10p per page. Then used big stapler in conservation to staple it along fold.
Maybe I should show it to Sweeps organisers. They could print off a load next year and sell to raise funds.

I'm rather concerned at the element of flippancy that appears to be creeping into this thread!

Where's Mr. Quelch? He'll sort it out!

What a great time. Just a line to thank John Barden and other Good Intent regulars for making the singaround a relaxed and pleasant environment yesterday. Thank You. Can't wait until next year. Enjoy the rest of the festival and hope the weather 'picks up' for you all over the next couple of day.

Best Wishes

Gone back home today Sunday to sort out the 12 string Thanks very much to John Barden who found the Problem and to Richard Bridge who sorted it out The fault may well have been mine has I strung the 12 string myself with NEW Martin strings gauge 10.

I cant see where I went wrong Richard showed me how to correctly string up a guitar at
Pigs Ear last year   Ie I angled the stings at the bridge end to sit snugly under the pegs. I alined the strings has best I could and above all I allowed for tension re taking the strings back half a fret before tightening.
But the strings kept slipping it would not tune and I could not get a note out of the guitar. What ever Richard done to it last night it sounded much better but i refrained from playing it and let it stand over night in its case I have taken it home with me this morning retuned it and its sounds excellent still slipping slightly bur I am sure it will be ok for The Bank holiday session so I will be returning back to Rochester Monday morn to rebook myself in to the B&B and join in the sing around session.

I gratefully got my nerve back last night. Maybe it was the lovely dinner with TDL and John and Jan Barden and Pete from PJs Music at the Shonza. Been turned on to Kulfi thanks to Trevor.

I have zero voice this morning after my wail last night. What I lack in confidence I make up for in VOLUME! So if anyone is suffering temporary deafness, my apologies.

Looking forward to good Monday afternoon session.

Growler- My very best wishes to your son for his wedding, and may it be a bit of high dry ground for you in an otherwise boggy year, and lead on to other happiness for you and your family. I suspect it was an argument well-lost.

Best wishes also to all at the GI for song and ale, and the intrusion of little else.

Such commitment !!!!! I've just left at 5.15 pm as it was supposed to be winding down, the place was still packed. See you all next year, when, hopefully my liver has recovered

They were heart stoppingly good. I am just stunned with what Raj can do with her voice and I loved the mini tabla lesson. Wish we could have stayed longer but we feared a long wait to cross the Dartford. Turned out there was not so much end of bank holiday traffic as we expected. Pity.

If that concert is at the GI and out of term time, we'd be up for it too.

Just lovely.

Thank you Karen and Dal - As usual we had a wonderful time.

Well done to Karen and Dal who worked liked troopers and to John Barden Growler and Melodeon Boy who refereed the sessions/ I have got a dose of tennis Elbow caused by repeatedly shutting that bloody door that leads in from the beer garden.

I wish folk would have patience when people are singing and not start swearing at people. because they have to wait at the door Such attitude proves that they had to much to drink in the first place cant people wait two minutes? to state that the folk outside are not welcome in the session part of the pub is not true but if they have attitude to others the likes of swearing at folk then they are clearly not be welcomed.
The fact is the people who played outside do so through choice 1. because there is more room outside. 2.They all play has one and join in with each other. 3. There is clearly not enough room to comfortably accommodate everyone in the session bar?

On the other hand
Well done to all musicians singers both inside the session bar and outside in the Beer Garden Hats off to the Greenwich lot some good stuff played.

Finally I was some what pissed off about my 12 string being out of action especially during Ride On on Saturday but thanks to Richard its now working perfectly.

Richard I believe I owe you a G Sting?

Kind regards to all and well done to al
Pierre.l

1. The string was a spare one anyway Pete, don't worry about it.
2. It's a bar! People should come in and then go to the bar, not stand in the doorway blocking it up.
3. If people don't stand in the doorway then others will not get stcuk behind them and hold the door open - permitting the blast of 27 steam-driven melodeons playing nearly the same thing as each other to to overwhelm any singer who is not one of the lords of steam and iron. Not to mention the use of a device first invented as a weapon of psychological warfare.
4. The tune bashers want to bash tunes without stopping and of course they are very welcome to come in and do some tunes but the singers simply can't join in with the tunes - it's merely a matter of reciprocal consideration. I enjoyed the tunes in passing (and might bring a deadly drum next year to do some of them)

Were the specialist tunes sessions at the Gordon and the Coopers as ebullient?

I think it a matter of politeness to stop at the door if one is to cross the path of a singer or player or both.Weather on route to the bar or not its common in the clubs I attend to wait and be patient,

but having said that "in the case of the Good Intent and the session bar on a packed Saturday night I agree Richard folk should not stand in the doorway blocking it up but move on in and go to the bar I think in future we should wave folk through if they stand in the door and the singers and performers will just have to put up with it.

I say in General to wait is good mannered and polite but clearly it wont work in the Good Intent when its really busy. Wave em through I say and let them go about there course. It will save all the above palaver.

In general the singer rounds need good people like John Kevin and Simon (and to give him credit Don has well He looked after the session Saturday while John went off to dinner and handed it back later upon John,s return to run these session fairly and to keep order. Without them session go to pieces has what happened Monday night after Kevin and Growler left ie I got fed up with it all and went back to the B&B.

The important thing about The Good Intent is that it has 2 bars (or 3 if you count the beer tent with 30 stunning beers tyo be had over Sweeps). Why people HAVE to walk through the crowd is somewhat beyond my comprehension. Just go to the other bar if you want a pint of Lager!! What, can't be bothered?? It's just one weekend out of 52. And to make it positively clear, the beer that was thrown over me was bitter, not lager. Nuff said!

People going in and out doesn't bother me, it is leaving the door open that's inconsiderate, especially when it is bloody freezing. Some people don't clock that the outside noise might be an intrusion on what's going on inside. But the damned cold. Were they raised in a barn?

What really got on my tits was the rude couple on Saturday complaining about certain types of songs/singers. I leaned over to them and said, "If you don't like it, then *please* leave." Too much to drink is no excuse for poor manners. And the lady sitting beside me said as much to them. When they finally left I applauded them.

Hmm. I had drink taken VT, so my geography may be inexact, but was that sitting on your left, or on your right? If on your left, I recollect two players, and I would have thought that two players should have known better.

OTOH, absent totally bad manners I think particularly at festival time we should try to be inclusive of a wider audience - I was really hoping to tempt some of the Sunday arrivers into song - I know one to be a very fine guitarist-singer (albeit contemporary) and one other I gather to be a talented drummer-percussionist. Likewise on Saturday there was a very useful young muso-producer present who I failed to tempt with the offer of the loan of a guitar.

That said, and while I in principle set my face against those who would have participants sit a test, pass an exam, and have an audition before performing, there were three who did give tongue over the weekend who would do better to consider whether what they were doing added to or detracted from the occasion.

Richard

re the rude couple.

The couple sitting just to the left of me were polite and attentive when our Linda was singing. They were in the corner of the bench seating.

It was the very talkative couple next down the bench in the direction of Don Thompson. Don't think they were muso's or dancers. TSO says they were just a pair of twats.   It was on the Saturday afternoon session. Perhaps you weren't in the room when this happened.

Really annoyed me because Linda wasn't there long because she had danced all day and I missed her song. Grumble grumble.

Does Linda go to Pig's Ear, typically? Or is there going to be a deathiversary this year? Would like a catch up with some folks.

"How delicate".
Well thanks very much for that advice Richard?
What with Dons advice along side yours I,ll take to practicing on the bloody toilet?

I was sitting next to Don all day Saturday and I do not recall anybody being loud or disruptive? There again such things can be over and done in a few minutes usually with the person/persons coping the hump and leaving which I assume is what happened. I may well have been outside have a smoke fore I do not recall this incident.

I was quite amazed I got has far has the castle this year last year I done every pub in the town and fore some reason never got to the castle.

also I was siting down in the town when this person with a dog walked past me and the dog went for me he was on a lead and the person pulled the dog back. Sorry the owner said to me but he does not like your Hat?
Looking at the moth eaten mutt crossly I said Well I am a hat collector I have got about thirty hats in doors which one do you think he might like?
