I was so intrigued with one of the adverts on the 'cat I followed the link to a Folk Shirt.

Can anyone tell what a folk shirt is and why this one qualifies as such?

I just clicked. $79? Ah, no, that is definitely not a folk shirt. Not for the folks I know, anyway.

It's what you wear when you're just 'folking around'.

Truly a beautiful shirt, the Folk model reflects, in its soft, washed finish, earth tone, and homespun blend of geometric and floral designs, a great American tradition of functional comfort, and a hearty spirit that says "I'm brand new and cost 80 bucks, but
I look just as genuine as if I'd cost three bucks 10 years ago and spent the last 6 months being worn by a pioneer following the great westward migration.

Solid cotton is a good start, but the rest is just fantasy. Perhaps the makers need to decide what is folk.

I'll get me (hair) shirt.

Thanks, Emma and McGrath for the Hedingham Fair contact details.

As for the "Folk Shirt" at $79, I might have been hard up for a shirt in my time, but never desperate.

I wouldn't use it for a floor clout.

Quaklity on the Hedingham Sweatshirts is brilliant. At least it was more years ago than I can remember when I bought the one I still regularly wear. They last!

............................

Talking of shirts with a look of hostory about them, how come it's so hard to get hold of shirts without collars? After all, how many people wear ties now except for funerals, job interviews and court appearances? So what are the collars for?

ok... pedant alert... look away now if you are likely to be bored...

I suspect that the "folk" refers to the design/pattern on the shirt. There is an echo of folk art in the pattern. A William Morris treatment of leaves and vines and swirlyness. He borrowed from folk art patterns when he "founded" the Arts and Crafts movement.

I guess that is why the makers of the shirt think they can apply the name "folk shirt".

William Morris looks like a folkie

Hey! Wake up! I told you to look away if you are easily bored. God. Some people.

VirginiaTam: Your link doesn't work. I suppose you meant to link to the portrait of William Morris at The Friends of William Morris Gallery web site.

Yes, he does sorta look like a folkie--but isn't he wearing a bow tie?

A folk shirt is surely a harmony suit with a beer pocket.

Emma, now I've seen everything..good heavens!

I notice they brag about the Amazon shirt being frayed around the ages and it having a "bandana inspired" pattern.

If anyone is seriously interested, Deva Lifeware has some very excellent products including shirts without collars and shirts which would accommodate most folkies, I think. I have bought clothing from them for over twenty years and can attest to their being worth every penny. They last forever, are well-made, and directly support the people in North Dakota who make them. They do have a few imports now, too.

Mudcatter Alice, an accomplished artist and singer, has made available her own design on shirts, mugs, etc. for Folk Against Fascism. Check them out. I think the design is classy. Thanks for letting me know about them, Alice!

Virginia Tam has it nailed - she actually used her eyes.

I noticed the pattern as well. I would call it a para-paisley, but the connection to William Morris is astute as well.

I also noticed that the shirt is wrinkled. I can imagine the kerfuffle behind the scenes:

"Oh no! We photographed #465789J23K , but we forgot to iron it first!"

"No sweat. Put some scruffy whiskers on the model and tell Amazon to label it a folk shirt."

There were a few more things I could print with "Folk Against Fascism", a sign with stakes you could put temporarily in the ground in your camp at a festival, and mousepad, journal, magnets, postcards, etc., along with the shirts and bumper stickers and other stuff, so I added them to the page:

Folk Against Fascism (shirts, etc.)
