For anyone interested in British maritime history, the Folger Library, here in Washington, is hosting a wonderful exhibit called "Lost at Sea: The Ocean in the English Imagination, 1550-1750." You can peruse it on the web at Lost at Sea: The Ocean in the English Imagination, 1550-1750 .

Janet et al-

I'm sure there were other photographers at work at the Festival. In fact we have documentary proof that several were taking photos. But the only photos I've seen posted here or on Facebook were by David Diamond, Gibb Sahib, and KathyW (did I miss anyone?).

Again if anyone wants a high resolution image of their own photo e-mailed to them, send me a PM (identifying which album it is in and what its number is) and I'll be happy to comply. I can't legally risk (it's also rude) sending an image of someone else's photo to anyone unless they have the explicit permission of the person featured in the photo. I'm also happy to delete any photo in Facebook in which the person featured objects to it being displayed; we tried to avoid posting anything with weird expressions but we may have crossed the line on occasion (and some folks are just...no, I didn't say that!).

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

More great photos, but is that really all for 2010? Oh well, the 2011 festival is less than a year away. BTW, I was at the Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat Show today. Carl Thornton was today's chanteyman, Barry Keenan was on the demo squad, and Denise Cannella was answering questions on the Charles W. Morgan, so all three were part of Dogwatch. This is the first time I've been there since the festival.

The MC for the final concert is Laura Travis. She hosts The Celtic Realm on Wednesday nights, 6-9 PM, on WRIU, the University of Rhode Island radio station (90.3 FM). The night before the Sea Music Festival, Bonnie and Dan Milner were guests on the show and they previewed music from many of this year's performers.

One of the many joys of this festival for me as a Mystic Seaport Member is seeing/hearing the seaport staff do songs they don't usually do. I spend a lot of time there and often follow the chantey staff from performance to performance throughout the day, but at the Festival I hear songs the rarely do. Gibb, your videos capture those moments. Thank you.

Well then consider yourself encouraged, Charlie! We love (and wait for) your/Judy's photos.

I am a night owl, so 2:00 is not unusual for me to be up and about. But it does cause typos -- I meant "Hilo Come Down Below" at *halyards* in my last post.

Peter, I only wish the footage were of better quality, but I have made peace with the lower quality as a compromise so I can also move about and enjoy myself as much as possible without worrying about a piece of equipment.

The one bit that I *really* wish I could have captured was after the Whalers' second demo, when they got out of the boat and performed "Dan Dan Oh." I had the perfect vantage point -- but my battery had died. I really appreciated in that performance how Dan Lanier requested Mr. Reed to graciously sit out and give the solo part to one of the "original" whalers so that we could experience that more ~authentic~ performance.

And one of my favourite photos is one of The Whalers and Dan showing Abrahams' book to local school children who were genuinely interested. Dan, if you'd like a copy of the photo and you haven't a similar one (I think at least one other person was taking snaps, too), let me know.

"the beautiful shot of the red boatwork (?) buildings with a silhouette of Geoff singing in the boatshed" is a photo by my wife Judy Barrows. I really like it too!

Chantyranger-

You and Richard did very well and I'm enjoying your new CD. It is important at festivals like Mystic to know one's limits so that one may survive to perform another year. That's why I dutifully and reluctantly pack it in by 2 am. We couldn't stay another night for the Gris because we did have commitments back in Maine; JudyB was actually expected at work on Tuesday morning and I had all these hundreds of digital images to sift through (haven't finished yet and I need all the encouragement I can get).

What a great festival this was, as ever. We were thrilled to be there. Thanks, Charlie, for posting photos, and thanks Gibb for YouTube clips! The Barroulie Whalers were alone worth going to the festival, not only for their stage performances, but for their demonstrations of chanteying while rowing, captured for all to see on Gibb's YouTube clips. Gibb, just to state the obvious, you have made a permanent record of probably the last West Indies chanteymen the world will ever see.

Altogether an outstanding lineup, as ever. Nordet was a special treat. Great singing and playing, and, though their English is limited, they communicated their humor (especially the lead singer) through gestures and expressions so well, non-French speakers, like me, could easily understand their joking around.

I hadn't heard David Coffin before, though he has been a longtime performer at the fest, and on the East Coast in general. For Richard, and my guest Susan, and I, who saw him for the first time, we became instant fans. The Johnson Girls were brilliant as ever (and thank you J-girls for all your support of Richard and I).

As Richard wrote, the typical festival lack of sleep caught up with us a little too much to go to the Gris Monday night. I missed saying goodbye to friends. Many thanks to Geoff for inviting us, and for organizing the whole festival. Thanks to Barry Keenan for arranging lodging for visiting musicians. We really appreciated that. Thanks to the whole staff and the volunteers!

More vids of chanteying at work, from Mystic:

Windlass - Chris Koldewey and Carl Thornton

Halyard - Peter Kasin

Halyard - Barry Keenan

My two favourites from these events, incidentally, were Peter singing "The Limerick Shanty" at the capstan and Carl singing "Hilo, Come Down Below" at the capstan. At the other end of the scale, Nordet sang "Ali Alo" very beautifully...but it didn't quite get the job done at the windlass. A learning experience.

I had a wonderful time at the festival, as did my husband & Chicago friends, but I'm only now recovering and getting around to going through all the pictures. Next time I'll have to train in advance, because heaven knows I'm not interested in pacing myself. I'm particularly grateful to all the very nice folks who made us feel welcome. In some ways we had even more fun than last year, part of it was that this time we had a better idea of what to expect and could better plan where to be. And the festival organizers are to be congratulated on doing a fine job of getting scheduling information out early. The best part, of course, was all the singing.

My sole regret is that once again, we didn't manage to find much time before or after the festival to enjoy many of the regular exhibits at the Seaport. There were just so many things going on!

Anyway, for those who are interested, here are some of our pictures from the festival, most of them taken by my husband. I congratulate him on achieving a personal best on fast lens changes during the Barrouallie Whalers boat demo.   We would have taken more pictures, but were having too much fun to be messing with cameras. I put them on flickr so you don't have to worry about signing up for anything to view them.

Hello to all,

Richard here (of Peter Kasin & Richard Adrianowicz).

We were sorry to miss the Griswold. We had gotten some conflicting information from two different contacts at the Gris concerning optimum arrival time but by the time we finally rented rooms at a Howard Johnsons Motel we were just exhausted. For my own part I was feeling the effects of taking too many pain killers (both of my hips are dislocated) - usually I just take my meds at night to sleep but activity at the festival had me taking them during the day as well! Pretty much out of it at the end there.

That being said I did have a great time at the festival. Between the Barrouallie Whalers, Nordet, the Johnson Girls, Bob Webb, Bob Walser, David Coffin ... I could go on because I don't think there was anyone there I didn't like. Except for the last day I did not make any of the after-hours shanty sings for lack of energy. It was great seeing John Roberts again, and Jerry Bryant (that saucy devil), Charlie and Judy, Dan Milner (I enjoyed gettting to know you better, Dan). And it was great having Walter Askew there. Walt has always been supportive and is a good friend. Peter and I do regret not having called him up to sing with us.

I'm sure I'll think of someone else I failed to mention here but I'm at work so I'll post again later.

Richard Adrianowicz (radriano)

the Black Brook Singers had a pretty busy schedule and were gone on Sunday, so I only got a brief moment to chat with them. I was curious to know if their people, the wôpanâak were involved in the lifesaving service referenced in the Dillon Bustin song, Humane Society. The answer is yes and some of the group's members had relatives in the service. However, they did not know of the song and I never got to meet up with them again.

They are on Facebook & I'll see if I can get some info off to them. The world keeps getting smaller thanks to this great festival.

HT's-

Yes, but it will be a day or two more. And Saturday is our special gathering at the Press Room (Portsmouth, NH) in remembrance of Barry Finn.

I should mention my methodology for posting images of performers. I generally first look for sharp focus and good lighting. Then I look for images where the performers seem to be excited about what they are doing. Then I look for interesting angles, perspectives, odd combinations of color, fuzzy action, interaction of characters. In some cases there weren't a lot of choices and the resulting images are a poor compromise for what I'd like to post.

I'm not about to discuss any particular image and I'm certainly not encouraging anyone else to say anything negative about an image; positive comments are more than welcome! But some (if not all!) of the performers need to think more about how they present themselves to an audience. Performance is more than memorizing the lyrics.

I do remember the period (back in the Pleistocene) when members of my group Roll & Go felt it appropriate to go asleep on stage between choruses or refrains. That did not look good from the audience perspective. Now our members are more likely to look with interest at the person leading the song or scan the audience and engage them in the fun. We think we are providing a better performance.

Cheerily,
Professor Charley Noble

I missed this, again, this year. Maybe next year; because I REALLY miss it.

Heidi et al-

There is no "exactly" about "the YTB Nite Owl sing." It's a constantly evolving concept.

"YTB" is an abbreviation for the Youth Training Building, adjacent to where the Conrad is moored, which is officially used as a green room for performers, a gathering place for volunteers and Friends of the Festival. Performers and volunteers also dine there, if they have time to dine.

After the official evening concerts some people have typically gathered there for singing, as an alternative to the shanty shouts at the dance hall, or have shifted over there after the shanty shouts. Officially the building is restricted to performers, volunteers and Friends of the Festival (donors) and Museum staff but "guests" of all of the above have been observed from time to time.

This year there was only half a dozen of us there on Friday night between midnight and 2 am. But on Saturday there evidently was a couple of dozen stalwarts, some hanging out until 4 am.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble, with only about 200 more digital images to edit...

Charley, Greg, thanks for the info about staying in Mystic. Gibb, great videos. I watched Friday's demo from Chubb's Wharf and could see everything, but the vocals were distorted when they reached the wharf. I was glad to be able to hear it on your videos. The best way to describe bologna to a French person might be "charcuterie" which is processed meat like sausages and pate. It is also the name of the type of store (like a deli) that sells these products.
