BE WARNED!

This is an interesting slant on the money scams which I have just received.

Headed, HM Revenue and Customs Refund, and looking exactly like the genuine green logo, telling me that they have decided that I am due for a £958.76 refund on previous years tax.

They will require details of my bank account to process the refund.

The big giveaway for me was that it was signed "Best Regards" HM Revenue and Customs.

BEST REGARDS from the Tax Man. I don't think so. LOL

The Australian Taxation Office lists similar scams on it's website.

One of the best is a cold-call, directing the taxpayer to send money to the Australian Tax Office care of someone in India!!

Several emails use language & formats not used in Australia - we have a financial year, not a fiscal year, & we'd never write - 500$ or 500 AUD.

But people fall for them.

Greed is good? (or god as I mistyped)

I also received the HMRC request for bank details. I reported it to the HMRC fraud department but haven't heard anything from them or the 'pretend HMRC' since.

I keep getting emails supposedly from HSBC saying there has been fraudulent activity on my account and they need to my details to verify I am the account holder, what a set of wankers.

The big givaway was that it was an email. Refunds are ALWAYS advised by snail mail.

With anything like that, just remember that any legitimate organisation won't need to ask for information as they'll have it already. If you specify account details on your tax return they can pay any refund directly. otherwise they have your name and address so they can send a cheque.

HMRC don't notify you of your refunds by email - any more than any bank would ask you for your security details that way. But am I the only one to be bombarded with emails supposedly from World of Warcraft (with whom I have never had an account)? Yesterday we reached the giddy totals of 15 of the buggers ...all, when tracked back using Spam Cop, from hotmail accounts. I'm reporting them all to Spam Cop but it's not making any difference and I'm heartily sick of it all. If anyone has a creative solution to this I'm ready to listen!

I get a couple of fake "verify your account" messages claiming to be from MSN every day. Now I know what is being done with the information entered by people who respond to them.

If the messages really are from Hotmail accounts then you should report them direct to MSN.

I had one, very plausible, seemingly from my bank. Only the address was 'wrong.' Trying to open a correspondence.

I reported it to the bank, who reported it to the government, who checked With me. Bloodhounds on the trail.
