Hi all,

The annual Frank Harte Festival is organised by the Góilín Singers Club which is based in Dublin. (Góilín is pronounced go-lean).
Some funding for the FHF is provided by the Arts Council of Ireland.
Liberty Boy who posted above, is a stalwart of the club and he and his wife Anne do Trojan work year after year, in a labour of love to keep the club vital, fresh, dynamic and growing, they are probably the main reason that the Góilín has endured uninterrupted for over thirty years. Liberty Boy and Anne are also the main driving forces behind the Frank Harte Festival.
Detail of the FHF will be found HERE
As a singer and affectionado of traditional singing I look forward to the FHF as the highlight of my singing year. The singing sessions are always brilliant, this is in no small way due to the audience because the quality of the listening almost surpasses the quality of the singing.
I am looking forward to the walking tour on Sunday morning "By Memory Inspired". Last year's walk was fantastic. It was planned, narrated and led most ably by Liberty Boy and we walked through that historic part of Dublin City know as The Liberty, frequently stopping to learn some history and to sing songs associated with the spot. We started off with about 25 but we were constantly being joined by people passing by who stopped to listen and got sucked in. By the time we finished, in a pub called the Brazen Head we must have numbered close to 100, it was mighty.
In conclusion I'd like to recommend that if you are within travelling distance of Dublin that weekend do not miss the FHF because I can guarantee that you will have a mighty craic and a hughly enjoyable time.

Fergus

Only a fortnight to go. Can't wait for it. Tickets for the concert on Sat 25th Sept are going like hot cakes. If you need one better get into the Góilín Club tonight, because there won't be too many around next week.

Hi Katlaughing

The Góilín Club is based in Dublin in Ireland. Frank Harte was a legendary singer and collector of songs and he was born, bred and based in Dublin and he died very unexpectedly five years ago. To honour him, An Góilín organise the annual Frank Harte Festival. It is a wonderful event and traditional singers come from far and near every year to celebrate and honour his life. If you ever get a chance to come to Ireland and witness this festival you will not go home disappointed, cos it gets better every year.

Really looking forward to hearing my good friend Robbie McMahon who is getting better as he gets older. Now at the pinnacle of his career at 85 years young.

I am also looking forward to hearing the younger singers as well of course.

Hi George

Would I qualify as a younger singer?
Looking forward to seeing you there, but not as much as I'm looking forward to seeing Joyce.
Be warned; Fowler has been to the tabloids and is about to release an expose of the antics that the pair of yis got up in your private boudoir in Howth in the very recent past; something concerning what you did to the contents of a large plastic bottle with some form of a "Jemmy" that you might or might not have added some "Pep" too. All I can say is that it sounded disgusting. I'm only sorry that I wasn't there to witness at first hand what the pair of yis were up too. Eh! would you care for a ménage á trois on the next occasion? (but without kiss-and-tell Fowler)

Looking forward to the FHF but I'm a bit concerned about this business with George. I may have to examine my conscience before exposing Val to his presence. I may even have to forego Bray next saturday!

Ah no, on second thought I'll chance it.

A fishy story if ever I heard one. But Fowler and I got great value in the fish shops on the quay in Howth the following morning.

Fowler was in great singing form that night but I wasn't and after a quick Jemmy I hit the sack.

Enjoyed the night in Howth.

I am surprised at Fowler telling tales. Huh.

Fergie, You are of course welcome to enjoy our company at any stage and it doesn't have to be in Howth.

But on to the Frank Harte Festval. It is indeed the highlight of the year adn if you are in the area you really must attend. The Sunday morning walk last year was magnificent and Joyce and I will be there on the Sunday this year to see and hear waht goes on.

Joyce says she is looking forward to seeing you Fergie.

It should be a great weekend though.

For the benefit of those living outside Ireland, Biffo is a nickname for our top man, or Prime Minister, who lately gave a ropey interview on radio "the morning after the night before". I hope you are not too hard on him, Pat. It looks like sooner or later he might be joining us in a Singers Club somewhere when they finally give him the chop. Look forward to hearing and seeing you at the FHF

In response to 'Guest', I won't be the only one who penned a verse or two in honour of Biffo's weekend bash, and subsequent dodgy radio interview. A certain 'Twangman', who should also be around for the Frank Harte Weekend has composed 'Seven Drunken Mornings'.

Whatever you say about these characters......they give us some great material to work on! Anyway, judging by the last opinion poll, Biffo & Co. need all the publicity they can get, and I'm only too glad to facilitate them!

Just back from the first session. It was a mighty night. Pat 'theVerse' sang his newly composed ditty 'Biffo's Lost Weekend' to the air of 'Lakes of Ponchartrain'. Well done Pat. I'd say that we had the guts of seventy songs sung. Excellent singers and excellent songs. Can't wait for tomorrow's sessions and the concert. We have a surfit of riches.

Well done Fergus and the rest of the crew for organising such a great get totgether. Nearly 200 there of which over 150 were singers. Robbie McMahon was in great voice . Unbelievable at 85 years young.

Hope I can still squawk at that age (if I get there)

Great session in The Brazen Head at lunchtime yesterday, following a historical walk nearby. Proper session that moved seamlessly from 1798 songs, through a run of songs about whiskey and on to a set of music hall/vaudeville numbers - and back again!

Well done, the Góilín.

Hi all

WOW.
What an immense success FHF2010 was.
I'm only now coming down from the high of it all. I thought that last years festival could not have been topped, but I was wrong. It took off on Friday evening and it got higher and higher right through the weekend.
The quality of the singing was superb, the venue was ideal, Robbie O'Connell's lecture was so entertaining and so very poignant, the concert was excellent (the masterly and unforgettable contribution of 85 year old Robbie McMahon). The Walk was brilliant, the food was delicious, the singing sessions fabulous and the company was very, very good.
I can't wait for the next one, it will be held at the ever-excellent Teachers Club beginning Friday 23rd Sept until Sunday 25th Sept. Put it in your diary NOW.
Looking forward to seeing you all back there again in 2011 and hey, if you missed it this year, don't miss it next year, because it was, in the words of the legendry Micil Quinn "the best singing festival I was ever at". Now wasn't that high praise.

Fergus

Asolutely Malcolm! I think the beds are already booked. Many highlights. Robbie's talk was superb, I had only ever heard recordings so it was very special to see him in action. No wonder all those who knew him loved him so much! Was chuffed to get a song on Saturday afternoon (Friday night was time to listen) and to hear so many other singers too. The big concert was great there was so much talent. I thought I was going to have an asthma attack in the late singaround on hearing Iris Robinson for the first time.....should have a health warning! Think I managed to get through the Trees they do grow high without greeting at the end and loved Ellen's reply of Lady Mary Ann

The Sunday walk was very special and what most impressed me is that this is not just some dry bit of history, its still real (as it should be) and sung about with such passion. Amazing

Didnt want the Brazen head or the last singaround in the Teachers Club to end

Massive thanks to you all for your hard work

Twangman's song concerning Biffo is listed at the above link as Seven Drunken Mornings. It is well worth a listen. The lyrics are clever, erudite, well observed, on the nail and funny. While you are at his site have a listen to some of his other compositions. For satire of the highest, sidesplitting order listen to; 'The Drawers my Iris Wore', 'The New Croppy Boy', and 'The Bull O'Donoghue'. For sheer lighthearted pathos listen to 'The Bould Ronnie Drew'. Twangman is a rare talent.
