I bought this at an estate sale of an elderly British couple. I was told it was antique etched British glass. It is certainly blown not molded. It was purchased in a London after the war, perfect condition. I would like to identify it .. Anyone know English etched glass?

etched glass

Kendall's son-in-law deals in antiques and may be able to identify it. Any maker's mark? Sometimes they are hidden on a rim or in the etching.
It is beautiful.

Etched glass, possibly American; the simple pattern suggests 1910 or later.
I collect Heisey, etc.

See ebay.com offer 160433847493, etched glass. The pattern is more ornate than yours; about the same date.

The quality is judged by the glass as well as the etching. Does it ring when tapped? Clarity? Weight? Glass composition?
Take a look through the stuff on ebay. Search etched glass wine. Lots of junk but some good glass as well.

Look at the Libbey glasses ebay no. 140406280052; older Libbeys are good quality and there are collectors. The design on these is restrained, not overdone like the first I linked. Libby has an initial usually, but much is not marked.

One of the other reasons I thought British is all of their glass was very high quality Irish and British crystal ... They had some early waterford crystal to die for ... I also picked up a very old waterford ships decanter ... She even had some Lalique . She was in her 90's when she passed away ...

I once had a Waterford crystal lamp in my bedroom. The cats got it. A very sad loss. My father had had it shipped directly from the factory when he toured Europe.

hmmm, you like waterford Mary? I do also, I brought a lot back from Ireland everytime I visit ... Amazing watching those craftsmen at work when I did the tour ...

I'm covetous, jealous and all those other words- an old Waterford ship's decanter- wonderful.

My wife and I have a Waterford pattern, we started when we got married. Would like more, but now that they and Wedgewood went broke, we would have to deal with the boutique-antique people, and they demand a pound of flesh. New stuff is being marketed as Waterford, but it is made in Germany and eastern Europe, and patterns have changed.

Your large etched piece must be very attractive. The restrained etching is good.

The reason that I suggested American is that much was exported to England. Many glass coal oil lamps found in England are from Canadian factories. Both fine quality and junk; Libbey and a few other kinds are much sought after.

Q
my best friend does estate sales, for some reason waterford or pretty much any of the great glass just doesn't sell around here no kidding, everyone wants the old furniture but glass usually gets little action. I can usually get some incredible deals, just let me know what to be on the lookout for you and I will let you know what he has. Garry has another one coming up in a month there is a lot of glass there but I am not sure what it all is since I didn't stop in there yet ... but boy can I get you deals and I mean it

hey Q
do you think this vase is waterford? boy is it beautiful, at the end of the estate sale the owners were going to toss it since there is a small chip on the bottom. They gave it to me ... it is cut glass very heavy and quite old ... She really had no junk in her glass, you should have seen the lalique .. but those sold for a fraction of their value to a dealer outside the sale. He gave like 200 dollars for 3 pieces, I told the owners they were crazy.

Nice vases, look extremely well cut.
If he turns up another Waterford decanter, esp. ship's type, holler. I will gladly pay!
PM me if you get anything.

I don't 'do' glass, but boy have I seemed to inherit a bunch of it. I like Fiesta Ware...the original 50's stuff NOT the new stuff.

The original stuff has just gone out of sight. Not acquired a new piece for ages.

Sorcha,
Garry has a bunch, orginal stuff at this upcoming estate sale, I saw a ton of the old stuff today when I stopped over an hour or so ago. I will see what price he has on it. I doubt it will sell around here, if not I can scarf it up for ya. At the end if stuff doesn't sell they dump it for a few bucks

We have a large old Fiesta platter and a large circular plate that never got used or scratched because we never used them (gifts to us at the time).
Price $5000 each.

Just kidding, one of the kids wants them. Stopped going to the auctions a few years back, so have no idea of what the dealers are paying or asking.

Just for kicks, if you are interested, here is a price guide for vintage Fiestaware. It doesn't say when it was last updated.

Gee! Minton, Spode cheaper than that.
And some of the glazes are toxic, so only good as display pieces.

I think that has been de bunked. I'll have to check. It was only the red anyway. I wouldn't use it in the microwave tho.

OK, not totally 'de bunked' but read this. Your raduim dial clock/watch is probably more dangerous. Just don't put REALLY acidic food on/in it.

Thanks, Sorcha. Never thought about it for years until this thread brought up Fiesta ware. Some of my hand-painted china pieces probably are bad, but they are for decoration only anyway.
