Subject: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: GUEST,Royal Fortune Date: 23 May 10 - 07:08 PM Hey Guys, Not sure if this has been discussed yet, but there has been some comment on a new website dedicated to sea shanties on the signing of shanty group 'Fishermans Friends' for a million pounds. Check it out and let me know what you think Cheers Stefan http://www.shantynet.com/ |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: Celtaddict Date: 23 May 10 - 08:28 PM Good for them! Some of the comments are pretty sad, aren't they? People do forget how much of life hinges on chance, and most of us have a general idea that life should be 'fair' but really, anyone doing well (financially or in any other way as well) in the music we love should be good news. |

Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: Gweltas Date: 23 May 10 - 10:05 PM Yes, they have been singing their hearts out for years for free every Summer Friday evening in the open air on the quay in Port Isaac, and later on in the two pubs in the village, and it seems that some executive record producer was vacationing in Cornwall and heard them and was impressed ......... and the rest is history !! I am delighted for them and just wish that some of our other wonderful shanty crews also get their chance to shine with a similar stroke of good fortune. Bear in mind that that the one million £ includes the cost of producing the CD, studio time, and publicity, etc... so I doubt that the lads will get to see very much of the money, unless from royalties, if their CD becomes a best seller. !! I am looking forward to hearing them next month in Falmouth at the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival (June 18th to 20th) and buying their CD. See the two links to Fisherman's Friends : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gg5d7cGtZY4&NR=1&feature=fvwp http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW5IdBWmWGc&feature=related There are 24 groups already listed to perform at this year's festival including groups from Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, Guernsey, Netherlands, Germany, France and England. So, if you are a shanty fan, the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival is the place to be !! See the link to their website : http://www.falmouthshout.com/festival.html |

It's still under construction but we want it to be as user friendly and fun as poss. Anyone keen to do a couple of CD reviews? Gweltas are you interested in doing a review of the falmouth shanty festival for me? |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: GUEST Date: 24 May 10 - 12:42 AM Hi Guest, I don't mind if you post my comment on your site. As regards writing a review of the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival next month, I must be honest: (A) I have never written a review of any kind before and, being a huge fan of this festival, the review would be all positive ! I've been to this festival for the last 4 years and I honestly cannot think of anything negative to say about it ...... apart from a moan about the unfortunately horrendous weather we had during it a couple of years ago !! (B) This year Hooks and Crookes Shanty Crew (Co. Waterford, Ireland) are scheduled to return to the festival and, being Irish myself, I am looking forward to meeting up with them again and to spending some time with them "having the craic", so I can't promise to get to see ALL of the other groups perform !! http://www.hooksandcrookes.com/aboutthegroup.htm However, I will try and write something when I get home from it and then it is up to you to decide whether it is worth using, or not !! To where might I send it, as I can't PM you with it, 'cos you signed in as a guest ?? Do you have an e-mail address that I could send it to ? Best regards, Anne. |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: GUEST,Royal Fortune Date: 24 May 10 - 12:47 AM Hey Anne, I tried to sign up to mudcat just before but it kept coming up with an error, so might try again tomorrow. Any review at all would be great, even if it is a bit lopsided! my email is stefan@shantynet.com, I would love to hear from you, any contribution is greatly appreciated. I'm in a shanty band myself and am coming over to Ireland in a week or so, don't suppose you live near Killarney? Cheers Stefan |

Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: Gweltas Date: 24 May 10 - 01:19 AM Dear Stefan, In answer to your question I used to live in Listowel (38 miles north of Killarney) but have been happily established in Liskeard, Cornwall since 1995, so the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival is just "down the road a bit" from me ! I wish you and your crew a pleasant and enjoyable trip to Ireland. Have a look at the Hooks and Crookes website in my previous post. To the best of my knowledge they are Ireland's only real shanty crew and it might be an idea to arrange a meet up with them either en-route to Killarney, or on your way back. They rehearse/socialise in a pub near Waterford city on Monday nights, and if you are taking the Pembroke/Rosslare route to Ireland you will go through Waterford, going to and coming from Killarney. Just an idea.... but no doubt your schedule is already well organised at this stage. What is the name of your shanty crew and where are you based ? Also have you ever been to the Falmouth festival. If you have not, I would heartily recommend it ! BTW congrats on your Shanty site. It was long overdue ! If you continue to have problems in applying to join the Mudcat a posting addressed to Joe Offer, with "HELP!" in the subject line should get you sorted out. I had similar problems and Joe got me sorted straight away, bless him ! He is an invaluable asset to us all. Best regards, Anne. |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 24 May 10 - 01:35 AM I did wonder why you have a separate page for NZ songs. Are you aware of the monthly James Craig Shanty Sessions normally 4th Thursdays. If you're ever in Sydney, it's a great place to sing. James Craig sandra |
Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: Royal Fortune Date: 24 May 10 - 04:32 PM Hi Guys, We're from a group called the Royal Fortune, based in Auckland (we'll have a link to our new site on there soon). Well, when I say group I mean me and my brother but what we lack in numbers we try to make up for in energy. We did look at coming over to the Falmouth Shout festival but we will be playing in Prague that weekend. We are also going to be performing at Langesund in Norway, and Hookes and Crookes will also be there so I'll make a point of meeting them. Funny you mention the James Craig, I've just been lent the DVD of the restoration and really enjoyed watching it. Have you heard the song James Craig? The Maritime Crew do it. I'll be sure to come along to the sessions when I go over next Cheers Stefan |

Subject: RE: Fisherman's Friends get signed for 1m From: breezy Date: 25 May 10 - 04:43 AM Well that was a hijack if ever there was Now back to the F Fs A Cd that will appeal to the masses but no doubt ruffle a few purists here. They sing more than shants Rupert Chrisdtie - the producer - along with Tom Gilbert have 2 oftheir songs on it and one is destined to be a single , so rumour has it. Guess royalties will be thin. Good luck to them I wish them all the best Now if you happen to be walking around the harbour in Padstow this summer, this week end coming in fact..... And then there is the famous Bodmin Folk Club on Friday at the Barleysheaf On Sundays Folk on the Moor |
