Went to see it last night and enjoyed it very much. Could have done with more music and less British RomCom but having said that, it is a "feel good" film of the first order. Well acted, well produced, stunning Cornish scenery and sea shanties. What more could you want? :-)

I'm going tonight. The lads occasionally came along to our session at St Kew Inn, a fabulous pub a stone's throw from Port Isaac, which always made for a very jolly and raucous evening. They're thoroughly down to earth and every bit as good as they sound!

One of the actors from the film now sings with them and I'm sure I spotted Cleavie on the opposing quiz team in the film.

You did see him Dave. I guess that others were there too. Defo a 'feel good' film with a hefty nod to 'reality'. Very enjoyable as long as you weren't after 100% accura. NIckcy

Folk singers (not sailors) singing shanty's/chanties, who would have thought!

They do pointedly call themselves Fisherman's FRIENDS - not actual fishermen ... ! You know, by way of analogy: I yell driving advice out my car window, but I don't claim to be a cop - merely a friend of the police, who should be out stopping reckless drivers instead of chasing thieves and villains! Don't get me started!!

It's a lovely, warm-hearted film, full of, er, poetic licence. The actors don't resemble the real chaps at all, the hard-bitten Cornishness is way overdone, etc, but it's a great yarn with the obligatory rocky romance (what a lovely woman too!) and happy ending. It was all filmed in genuine Port Isaac, as lovely an area as you could wish to have, and all the coastal scenes were filmed near the village, none of yer Poldark licence. As we're locals, it was great to see all the gorgeous scenery that we're so familiar with. But be warned that Port Isaac is impossibly heaving in summer. What with Doc Martin, a weak pound and now this, this year will be even worse! Pick a nice day in late spring or September, go for a walk on the cliffs above the village and you're in heaven!

and maybe crabs, and other pub grub in shells...

I spotted a pint of Tribute being drunk from a dedicated Tribute pint glass, many, many pints of which I've quaffed in sessions that provided free beer, as well as an HSD pump on the bar...

Not a big fan of grapefruity Tribute meself, unless it's free, and we Sharps aficionados refer to HSD as Horrible Sudden Death...

Any film about traditional music and song is welcome and I enjoyed it. Full marks for authenticity in locations, but I’m not sure why they skirted around the real tragedies that the Group have experienced and invented other fictional stuff instead. The script is rather weak, in its reliance on cliche dialogue in places, plus the predictable Romcom formula for the two leads (inauspicious meeting, attraction, separation, reconciliation), and it would have been good to have had folk music as the incidental music and not acoustic pop songs. However, I guess that’s just me being picky, so don’t be put off going to see it. As for product placement, they’ve certainly done a proper job for St. Austell ales.

A bit of a documentary radio programme about them.
Mostly with Jeremy Brown & Jon Cleave :

Outlook - BBC World Service
The voyage of The Fisherman's Friends

Released On: 10 Feb 2021 ,,,, Available for over a year
(about 35 minutes)
Presenter: Emily Webb

The group got together 25 years ago and started singing sea shanties, which are a type of maritime song.
After a chance encounter with a BBC radio DJ, Johnnie Walker, they ended up landing a £1 million record contract.
Much to the group’s surprise, their album rose up the charts and they went on to play the Royal Albert Hall and Glastonbury Festival. Things were going well until 2013, when an accident backstage at one of their gigs killed singer Trevor Grills and the band’s tour manager Paul McMullen.
The band didn’t perform for a year and in fact had no intention of singing again. However, they returned to the stage and have had a feature film made about them, Fisherman’s Friends.

Sadly, I haven't been in circulation in north Cornwall for the last seven years because of my rotten hearing loss. I can just tell you what a lovely, great bunch of blokes they are, genuinely grounded and genuinely talented.

A film about Cornish sea shanty group, Fisherman's Friends, is being turned into a musical. The musical has been adapted from the 2019 film Fisherman's Friends. The show, which will be packed with shanties, will open at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro in the autumn. It will feature shanties made famous by the band including Keep Haulin', Nelson's Blood, No Hopers Jokers & Rogues and Sweet Maid Of Madeira.

The Hall For Cornwall has just been comprehensively refurbished. I understand that the Fisherman's Friends musical is going to represent its grand reopening! It would be nice if the hall could be full of people for it...
