I don't think we've really covered this subject yet. We'll just go with English language ones, okay? Here are my nominations:

1. Snodgrass
2. Lilywhite

If, for example, Pruella Snodgrass were to marry Desmond Lilywhite, they could have a daughter named Hermione Snodgrass-Lilywhite. Wouldn't that be marvelous? Hyphenated names sound so upper class and prestigious, don't you think?

Those are humorous indeed. But are they wimpy? Well, I suppose some of them are. Isn't "Cocks" normally spelled "Cox"?

I always thought the surname Ramsbottom sounded pretty odd...I'm glad I wasn't born with it. I'd have changed "me" name right quick. ;-)

What do you mean by 'wimpy'? So far I don't see anything particularly wimpy about any of the names. Fact I'm not even sure I know what a wimpy name would be.

What is your definition of wimpy?

My definition? Well...the word "wimp", in present usage, means a weak, cowardly, ineffectual person.

A wimpy-sounding name can summon up mental images of that sort of thing in many peope's minds, although it is quite plain that the name itself in no way necessitates that the person BE weak, cowardly or ineffectual.

Who would you be inclined to hire as a bodyguard, for example, based on the feeling you got from his name alone:

Jim Corrigan?

Or Casper Milquetoast?   ;-)

I'd rather not hire a bodyguard. They can be bribed.

I've always liked some of the names that were changed during Victoria's time. Good old names like Jeremy Ballocks or Henry Fartfire.

(Please note that my own surname means "Keeper of the Sacred" or, in modern Dutch, "Goalie.")

Casper Milquetoast? That's not fair- until Webster came up with that name for his character, Milquetoast was a perfectly acceptable item. When I'm feeling poorly I still sometimes heat up some milk, toast some bread and drop a poached egg in the bowl.

Hmmmm. It is when I'm feeling like a weak, ineffectual or bland person. So, she says grudgingly, I'll grant you that one.

There was a presenter on childrens TV in the UK (round about 1980s') called Christopher Lillicrap. Honest, it says so here!

I often wonder if he lost work because of it, or if he changed it....

Fey (or occasionally LeFay) and Hissing sound fairly weak to me, as do Heyhoe, Loveless and Petty. In fact there's a whole set of surnames starting Pet... that have a bit of that connotation about them.

I don't know about the wimpiest ( aside from J Wellington Wimpy),
although I recall an English Ambassador to the USA , called Sir Crispin Tickell, which certainly tickelled me.
A senior officer I encountered in my Navy days was one Commander Robotham ---he insisted that it should be pronounced " Row Bottom", and thus became known to officers and ratings (enlisted men) alike as " Paddle Arse".
Our very own Sir Ranulph Twistleton - Wickham-Fiennes is,I feel, possessed of a somewhat whimsical ,if not actually wimpish, handle ; the longest conjoined surname known to English heraldry is the magnificent ( IMHO) Temple-Nugent- Brydges- Chandos- Grenville . -----not bad, eh ???

Turnipseed is wimpy. And maybe Popcorn. (Boy, that one's probably an immigration screw-up mis-Anglization.)

Good lord, Rig! That is tragic.

Chongo's surname is Chimp. He adopted that surname for legal reasons upon entering the USA. He had just been called "Chongo" before that when he lived in Africa. Bush chimps don't have surnames, just given names. Most American primates really prefer to go simply by a given name, but the human bureaucracy won't provide them with papers unless they adopt a surname, so Chongo went for the obvious and took the surname "Chimp".
