1. I am a true born Irishman. I never deny what I am.
I was born in sweet Tipperary town three thousand miles away.

CHORUS: So hurray, me boys, hurray! No more do I wish for to roam. The sun it will shine in the harvest time, to welcome poor Paddy home.

2. The girls they are gay and frisky. They take you by the hand,
Saying, "Jimmy machree, won't you come with me and welcome poor Paddy home?"

CHORUS

3. In came a foreign nation. they scattered all over our land.
The horse, the cow, the sheep, goat and sow fell into the stranger's hand.

CHORUS

4. The Scotchman can boast of the thistle, and England can boast of the rose,
But Paddy can boast of his Emerald Isle where his dear little shamrock grows.

CHORUS

As John Moulden mentioned a few years ago ( Seeking Irish Lyrics ) the song went from Willie McElroy to Cathal McConnell, and everybody else has learned it from them; mainly from Cathal's recording with Boys of the Lough. It doesn't seem to have been known before that. Noel Murphy would be rather a desperate move for a source; but just perhaps adequate if you can't find anything better.

Ron Kavana also does a cracking version.

I completely disagree with Noel Murphy being a desperate source...I'd take him over any line up of the Boys of the Lough...any day of the week.

MMario, the only caveat to using the above abc is that verses 2-4 are sung to a tune that's more like the chorus than that of the first verse. At least that's how it was when I heard it. I haven't heard it by any other artist to have a reference point, so I can't say how "correct" that is or not.

oh crap! I should have paid more attention. *sigh* That's what I get for not listening to it first....

(but I'm listening to Rick Fielding at the moment - so not too upset...)

From: Brían
Date: 22 Apr 03 - 08:11 AM

Here is a version I got from the singing of Len Graham when he was in Boston, MA. He unfortunately gives no background on the song:

TO WELCOME POOR PADDY HOME

Chorus:
Hooray me boys, hooray
No more do I wish for to roam
For the sun it will shine in the harvest time
To welcome Poor Paddy home

  1. Farewell to the Shamrock Shore
    No longer can I stay
I intend to cross the ocean
    Bound for Americay

  2. Repeat chorus:

  3. And when we're on the ocean
    You're always on my mind
    I'm thinking of old Ireland
And the friends I'm leaving behind

  4. Repeat chorus:

  5. Now to conclude and finish
    May fortune always prove kind
My toast will be so far away
To the friends I'm leaving behind

  6. Repeat chorus:

    Repeat first verse

The boys of the lough a Scottish band?, I was of the belief that County Fermanagh and Cathal McConnell were Irish.
I have a recording from TV, with Cathy Jordan singing this song. Ard Mhacha.

Subject: Lyr Add: WELCOME POOR PADDY HOME (Fenian version)
From: GUEST,Lifted Kilt

I am a true born Irishman,
I'll never deny that I am-
I was born in North Cork
By the Limerick-Tip line,
But it's now far away that I am...

Chorus: Hurray, boys, hurray,
No more do I wish for to roam-
For the sun it will shine
In the harvest time,
To welcome Paddy home.

Temptation made stronger by whiskey,
And it took ye by the hand-
Saying "Dear Mick McCree,
Won't you come with me,
And welcome the stranger in".

Then came in the faraway stranger,
And he settled all over the land-
The horse and the cow,
The goat and the sow,
Came into the stranger's hand.

And the stranger did plunder and pillage,
And he robbed the poor countryfolk blind-
Sowed the seeds of dissent, fear, and hatred,
And he left faith and famine behind.

Now the Scotman may boast of the thistle,
And the English may boast of the rose-
But Paddy alone can claim the Emerald Isle,
Where the green three-leafed shamrock grows.

Chorus

Search it up on You Tube. There are several people playing it and the chords are easy to spot. Particularly easy to see is a version done by Tichnor and Shay somebody.
