Not much traffic on this thread these days, which is a shame. Anyway, I'll add a little something in the hope that those few of us who like these things are interested.

Here's a stunning little (30mm diameter) Hamilton 987S grade from 1940, with a hacking second hand. The face is sweet - and the movement is just beautiful!

The second hand can be stopped, for better synchronization.

When the crown is pulled out fully, it moves a hair spring against the balance and stops it - so the second hand stops as well. If you stop the second hand dead on 12 o'clock, then the watch can be synchronised exactly with another watch, or the speaking clock, or an atomic clock on your computer - or a radio time signal.

Hacking is a feature of military watches. This little Hamilton dates from 1940, so the movement may have been made for military use - though the case has no military markings, and the dial has Roman numerals, both of which are not usual for military issue.

My Hamilton 'GCT" (Greenwich Civil Time) 4992B WW2 navigator's watch from 1943 - one with a 24-hour dial - also has a hack on the seconds hand.

Sorry for the marginal topic, but does anyone have experience with these Atlas Editions pocket watches? I'm curious about them, but for their wrist watches but I've seen a description saying it stopped working after something like ten days. I'd rather not throw money at them if they can't actually be used as what they purport to be: Watches.

Use till they quit, then toss or give it to a child as a plaything.

It is a Chinese version of the dollar pocket watch of the old days, which were much better than the Atlas.

Here's a sweet addition to my collection. This is a USA-made, Lord Elgin "Clubman" from 1952 - Grade 680. A nice waffle dial and a sweet little movement in it. Just in this morning...

I picked up a Bunn Special, 60 hour, 1927 date, a couple of years ago. The price was low because the case has an initialed back. The dial is identical to your Bunn.

It runs slow, 3min/week; I don't think it has been serviced since 1944 (watchmaker's mark).

I like those Lord Elgin wristwatches too, some nice cases. I have one with a black dial and square face that is as pretty a "dress watch" as one could desire. Some bargains out there, I could be tempted to start collecting again.

Here's something a little different - an Omega f300Hz cal. 1520 - which is one of the early Omega electric "tuning fork" watches from 1970. I've never been a fan of quartz watches, although I have a couple of solar ones, but that electric/electronic short period in between hand-wound movements and full quartz is a fascinating one. The tuning fork watches - mainly devised by Bulova - still live on in the Bulova Precisionist, and their Accutron is a well-known marque.

All sorts of makes, including Hamilton and Wittnauer, had a spell at tuning forks. They function at 300Hz - which gave them the name "hummer". If you listen closely, you'll hear that the mechanism hums just somewhere in between D and Eb above middle C!

So I go to an old antique shop. And find a mint 992b in the original box. The dealer had 350 on it and it was a deal at that price. He takes it out and drops it on the floor. Good bye balance staff. I ask him how much now. He says 150. Took it to mahlon and in 20 min he had it perfect. He said it is amazing condition. I will get you a picture Will. I don't need another cause I have 11 of them but what a deal. Of course mahlon would not let me pay him. So I will get even with him. The watch is new old stock, mint

I just got myself a new chronograph - modified ETA 7750 automatic movement - by Christopher Ward. Inspired by the RAF Typhoon fighter. It has a ceramic casing built around a titanium body. It's a C1000 Typhoon FRG4 - serial number 0115.
