Earlier I mentioned that the world-famous Manchester United soccer team is coming to Kansas City this Sunday to play an exhibition game against our team, the Wizards.

We thought we'd have a chance, because the temperature might be 100, and Man U would wilt. Instead, after two weeks of hot, hot weather, (96, 98) the high Sunday is predicted to be a balmy 86!

Maybe they offered the weather demons a burnt offering of bangers and mash, what do you think?

The newspaper says that Wayne Rooney and other really famous players will not be here. Scared of a tornado, maybe?

Come on the Wizards! On the principle of David v Goliath of course, and for the look on Alex Ferguson's face when things go wrong.

BTW I'm from (not far off) Manchester.

Well... they shant put the big names at risk. The only reason (I suspect) that Rooney, and others, were even played so much in the World Cup is that they HAD to be played and they agreed not to "push it".

Still, it should be somewhat of a boost.... hopefully... for US... ah, er, um... soccer.

I just ordered our tickets. I wasn't planning to go, because we are playing music that afternoon, but then I saw that the game doesn't start till 5 pm. That is, players come on at 5 pm. 'God Save the Queen' starts at 5:01:30.

How's that for precise timing?

And with lower temperatures, it should be bearable. We'll take bandannas to wet and drape across our necks.

It makes me mad that it costs $25 to park, though!

"Well... they shant put the big names at risk."

That MIGHT be the reason, gnu. Or perhaps if the big names came and sampled our world-famous barbecue, they would desert their native land to live here. heh heh

$25 to park. Are they going MAD green?

BBQ... I think Wayne can afford to have it delivered. >;-)

'God Save the Queen'

Why? National anthems at club matches aren't normal practice. After all, a high proportion of the players are from other countries. Like the present owners.
.......................................

If you're going make a point of wearing Green and Gold... in solidarity - like so.

Why? Because they ARE going to play the US anthem and it's only polite to play the other county's anthem.

After all, the Yanks are rather polite you know.

Do they play the US National Anthem at all games? Like they used to play the British one at the end of films in cinemas.

My guess would be... you fuckin bet they do!

But, that's only a guess. I have no first hand knowledge.

The reason why Wayne Rooney and others won't be playing is that they are having a richly deserves reat after last season followed by the World Cup.

The World Cup???? Geez, England didn't do squat in the World Cup!!!

As for green and gold, I gotcher green and gold right here.

Yes, we play the national anthem at all games.

My horoscope said to give mself a treat today, so the game is the treat. But I didn't see the horoscope till after I'd bought the tickets. Cue 'Twilight Zone' theme...

Leeneia, there was a time when one of the Pacific island nations beat the England team in a friendly!

Turned out later that they had lodged them in separate rooms, and every room had a willing young lady, well versed as to who was staying there. The whole team was knackered.

Hey, it worked once.....

Why would anybody in their right mind want to pay to see a team that does not have their star players in the team.

I wouldn't pay to see Man U ever. Cause I hate em :-)

Silly Arthur! I am going in the hopes that the Wizards will win.

You won't be aware of this, but the Kansas City baseball team (the Royals) has a reputation for losing many games in a row and then defeating the top team, which cannot figure out what hit it.

There's nothing like the warm glow we get when the Royals defeat the New York Yankees. (This phenomenon may have something to do with a certain 'Emerald City' which used to be around here somewhere.)

As for the 'top players', in my view they are merely the players that got the most publicity. I'm sure Man U's younger players will be worthy foes. They don't know it, but they will be playing on the same field where the 'Emerald City effect' operates.

By the way, I read yesterday that Man U and the New York Yankees are the biggest sports enterprises in the world - moneywise.

hi arthur

I am a season ticket holder for Man United and have been for some years. I reckon as far as watching football goes I get my money'sworth many times over - which is not something that many English club sides' supporters can truthfully say.

As a Man U. supporter I don't hate any team. Even Liverpool and Manchester City, though great rivals don't make me dislike them. Of course I enjoy beating them......

With regard to them not playing their stars on this tour - it was always known that any World Cup players would not be on the tour. As this is almost all of Man. U.s team then Fergie is doing the right thing and giving experience to up-and-coming players like Welbeck & Cleverley to play with older players the like of Giggs & Scholes etc.

Remember most of United's "reserves" could guarantee a place in many of the other teams in the Premier League m- as many do on loan.

I see that they opened up in Philadelphia with a win.

Leenia I hope that you thoroughly enjoy the game and that Manchester United provide you all with some scintillating football.

Kind Regards

MikeL2

I suppose if you support Man U then it's got to be worth it :-)

My gut feeling is that Man City will be the team this year, followed by Spurs.

Don't go tipping them off about the Emerald City effect, now.

hi arthur

I agree with you that Man City will be one to watch. They have been buying in some very good players to supplement last years'.

They are beginning to look like they will have two great players in almost every position which should provide them with the cover that they lacked last year.

Spurs too will be strong. Liverpool under new management will not be far off either.

Man United and Chelsea will have to play very well to repeat last year's performance.

The Premier League is getting stronger with more teams fighting for the top positions. This should make for an interesting and exciting season and it will be more difficult to call who will come out on top.

cheers

Mikel2

It's true that the score of the game with Philadelphia was only 1-0.

Is that money talking, or is it the nature of soccer?

Bucky Katt has something to say about that:

No, no octopuses.

Here's the data on the record catfish, however, which may compensate for the missing octopi:

Catfish, Flathead
Ken Paulie, Caney
123 lbs. - 61"
May 14, 1998 - Elk City Reservoir
Rod and reel with jig and minnow

MikeL2 - I appreciate your promise not to snitch about the Emerald City effect.
