I can only assume it was a bunch of rich guys who wanted to scare the crap out of the people that coulndn't pay them what was was owed in order to attempt to get their families to work themselves to death to keep get the poor bugger out or get him out.

Actually they do exist illegally all over the US. It is part of the illegal immigration trade. Read up on Tong gangs and human trafficking from Colombia, China, Mexico. People are held in bondage until the debt of their transportation is paid, often for years and as slave labor. If they go to the authorities or try to escape, their families at home are endangered - death, mutilation, etc.

Banks are now using more common sense. You can't get money out of folks if you put 'em in jail, especially as the number of debters rose to near 100% in the western world today.

A friend of mine (from Moncton, btw) had a short term job in Arizona selling used cars to migrant farm workers....where everyone could get credit. He said that the down payment was much higher than the price they paid for the car. His job was repossing the cars. He normally went after the car shortly after they missed the first payment. They got most back to sell again, again,....and again.

Yep, let Bubba miss a couple childsupport payments and he ends up weedeatin' for th county fir free in a striped outfit right outta "Cool Hand Luke"... Not too sure how that helps his ex, Billy Jo, and his 3 kids but it's free labor for the county...

Last summer I bid on a major landscape job at the newly renovation train depot an' bid it on the contingent that I get two "stripees" (that's what I call 'um) and got the job and sho nuff had me two stripees for two moths, both in fir not makin' child support payment...

Debtor's prison was stupid in that the carrying out of the threat damaged both debtor and creditor (it made the debt worthless). A priori, however, it made sense in that it made credit available to people who had no security to offer other than their bodies.

The same thing might be said of bankruptcy as an institution.

Bobert, I think you will find that Bubba was not jailed for failure to make child support payments, but rather for contempt of court.He was ordered to pay and he failed.
Anyone who refuses to support their kids belongs in jail.

Well okay, Capt'n, but a mere technicality... Ya' see, we have 17% unemployemnt here in Page County and the jobs in NoVa have dried up, too so orderin' Bubba to pay up...

..ain't all that realistic... Meanwhile, on any given day some 20 inmates are "checked out" of lockup to do work that the county doesn't have the money to pay to have done... I mean, I could see it if the county were payin' these guys and the money went to their ex'es fir the child support but one thing fir sure is that sa long as these guys are locked up you can take it to the bank (little joke) that...

...Betty Jo and the kids ain't gonna get squat and when Bubba gets out he'll be just that much further behind in his payments with the same screwed up economy and 90 days later will be abck in jail for not catching up the arrearages???

What this amounts to has little to do with providin' a way for Bubba to ever get caught up but a cycle where the county will always have cheap labor they can't afford otherwise...

RANT coming on. Creating a situation in which you have intersections with constant heavy traffic, including a substantial number of semi trailer-trucks, and no room for the trucks to turn without taking up at least two lanes. A mile from home we come to a corner where it's common for a whole line of cars to have to back way up from the corner for a truck to get around. This morning I had to slide way the hell backward, backing alongside another semi, trying not to take all day about it while backing safely, sweating blood while the oncoming truck proceeded to turn with his rear wheels inches from the left front of my car. I just find that so much fun!.

A technicality? Hardly! A court order is an order. However, if the court fails to realize that Bubba CAN'T find a job, and he can prove he is trying, then the court belongs in debtors prison.

A delinquent pappy, if he can show his real inability to pay what the Court ordered, will probably get a reduction in the order.

Note that qualifier: "if he can show his real inability". The Judge may well be doubtful, but he doesn't want his orders ignored, and on the other hand doesn't want his orders to have the reputation of being fruitless, empty orders either.

My mother used to mention young girls who were walked out in a line and were put to work scrubbing steps to houses, pavements etc. The crime? Having a baby out of wedlock or underage. Whatever sadistic pious idiot thought of that one? I have my suspicions that the church might have been involved yet again. And this is not in the days of the Victorian Workhouse this was 30s/40s Britain in Bristol, England.

Calling Sunday School, Sunday School was a stupid idea, why call it school? Why didn't they call it something else. As far as I was concerned school was for the 5 weekdays.

As to Sunday school, I've read somewhere, a long time ago, that Sunday school was originally intended (and so named) for kids or adults who couldn't attend ordinary school during the work week. It was offered as a service to those who would not otherwise get any schooling.

Because it was offered by churches or other religious-based institutions, the "commercial", so to speak, was the religious training offered along with the reading and writing and 'rithmetic. When the "auxiliary school" function became obsolete or at least less important, the "commercial" turned into an "infomercial" of just the religious message.

Dave has it right. Sunday School was invented by John Wesley or one of that sort, for kids who worked 6 days a week in the sweatshops to have some hope of schooling. Sadly no atheist societies stepped up to the plate and it had to be those god-awful churches. Sunday because it's the only day that the little tykes were allowed to not work 12 hours.

On a totally different subject, one of the stupid ideas of the century is the Bush administration's notion of blocking birth control efforts especially in regard to foreign aid educational efforts to third world countries. When a vicious cycle between high birth rates and extreme poverty is in play driving the planet to an unsupportable number of people in regions which are already depleted and poverty-stricken in terms of basic resources, the notion of denying education and means of birth control because of some fancied metaphysical drivel is (IMHO) downright anti-social.

It's not stupid, just "seemed like a good idea at the time" (another thread)....possibly, a bit of a let down to potential "Jello-aficionados and Jellobates".

I suspect because it is not as good as it looks, takes the focus away from the tasks at hand, (especially if you like Jello and are eating it:)

Another consideration, Jello, like many drink crystals, temporarily stain the skin....not that there is anything wrong with that.
