Yes, I've made it safe and sound. Travels were pretty smooth, though that was my fist time thru customs / immigration is the modern age and boy is that a pain in the behind.

Barbry and John picked me up and were very patient as they decided whether they wanted me in the country. Very very nice embassadors to greet me.

At Barbry's now resting and freshening up.

A big warm welcome to you Max now you have landed in the UK.

When you say, "Barbry and John picked me up and were very patient as they decided whether they wanted me in the country", I do hope that By "they" you were refering to Customs/Immigration and not Barbry and John having second thoughts about taking you in on the first leg of your UK Escapade!!!

It tickled me, because I suddenly got this image in my head of Barbry and John standing at a distance;looking you up and down intensely, scratching their heads and mumbling quietly together for ages and ages with looks of great concern, fear and doubt on their faces. And you, stood all forlorn and forsaken; like a little boy lost and unwanted. Bless!

It's a funny and sort of sentimental image that I can't get out of me head now.
So if I have a kind of strange stupid grin on my face when I meet you you'll understand why I hope.

Have a great trip Max and I am hoping to meet you in Whitby on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Damn but I am jealous!! I had a harbored a small thought that I might be able to squeek out a surprise and just show up, but between the two ailing parents, performing sched, and getting my youngest child registered and checked into her dorm, it just wasn't to be. Have a great time, buddy, and I second strongly Sinsull's admonishment. Enjoy the young man's company, but you MUST send him home in three weeks. We absolutely want him back.

You're right Amos, Max probably will come back to you all talking funny.
He will be picking up all kinds of strange and diverse dialects on his travels around the UK and as he is spending quite a long stay in bonny Yorkshire he might break into some Broad Yorkshire speak on his return and then you won't understand a single word he says.

You might think that he met God in Whitby and has come back talking in tongues!

Got a nap, lunch then a nice long, wet, muddy messy walk thru the
countryside. Classic English village (very Harry
potter), old church (graves at this church from the crusades), cute old pub, cobblestone, grass fields with lambs grazing around, lovely river, different grasses, flora and fauna. Just lovely.

Went to an Indian restaurant for dinner then for a
quick site seeing drive through a coastal town called Blackpool. Very
much like ocean city (md or nj) with boardwalk and old roller coasters and piers
and such, or more like cony island cuz it was all old and gritty. They
explain its well past it's heyday and full of prostitutes, knife
fights, drugs and 'funny girls' (trannies).

Heading the the Whitby fest in the morning. 1am here, so I'm off to
sleep. This house I'm in was built in 1664. Crazy shit considering
that's older than America.

The first place anyone took me when I first got to the UK was to a pub. I had to step down to get into it, and it had started at street level in the 16th century, when it was new. The whole age thing really hit me. People are impressed in the U.S. when somebody says their house is 200 years old. 200 years ain't nuthin'...

Hi Max. Sounds like you are quickly getting to like the quaintness and the sense of History in the environs of the UK (apart from Blackpool of course, which is a stain on the landscape!)

Anyway, to make up for that, you will be in Whitby in the morning and staying there for a few days, and that is where you will truly appreciate a proper traditional British seaside town.

Welcome to the UK, glad my colleagues in Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (they haven't been 'Customs and Excise' for several years now...) let you through, obviously my memo worked.

Max - you want old? The Black Lion pub in Plaistow where we'll be on 2nd Sept, is mentioned in the Doomesday Book - that's a whole 400 years before Columbus failed to turn left at Albuquerque! OK, so the present building is only from the 16th Century (that's the 1500's) but it's still pretty impressive!

Well, I have to report that Max appears house trained, so no need to hide the best china, chaps!

We are loathe to part with him - been a pleasure having him with us. He might have a few bruises from our low doors (house actually dates back to 1214 but had a 'new' 'front' in the 1600s so quite modern,really)!

Maybe see some of you in Whitby and I'm sure Max will have a great time for the rest of his stay.

ps It's a well known cabaret club in Blackpool called 'Funny Girls' where the acts are all cross-dress/transvestite, rather than a slightly offensive northern term!!

I doubt anyone can travel to Whitby and not marvel at the views that can be seen on the approach road (or rail).

That's why I always wanted to visit GB and Europe and elsewhere. The sense of history, longevity, civilization... even when I visted Max's part of the world, I enjoyed the sites, the architecture and so on because I live in a backwater town that's not even near as old as where Max hails from.

Enjoy it and soak it in Max. I'll have to settle for Google Earth and Boatin Wend's canal videos... which are excellent, BTW!

Hang on... love you all, and hate to be pedantic (well, a bit..) but America was well established by 1664, even the Colonies that became the Good Ol' U S of Wherever. You supplied us with one of our greatest revolutionaries, High Peters (well, he was American from 1635-1642).

That's just yesterday, if you want "old" remember the Synod of Whitby, just there where you are, that decided that England would follow Roman Christianity... except it wasn't "Whitby" then, but Streansall or something like that.
