Great testing conditions for the players. They certainly needed the boat buggies yesterday.

I am going to put the jinx on the Europeans and suggest that they will beat the yankies.

Who decided on the white baseball caps and the white shirts with lovely light lilac jumpers for the americans. They do look sweet. Puts some bells on their legs and they could morris dance.

Go Europe.

`Puts some bells on their legs and they could morris dance.`

That begs the question . . . .

Further to what I've said on Golf's Majors, in my opinion, the Ryder Cup is a ridiculous piece of continentalism, that (unlike the World Cup) excludes many of our world's finest golfers.

However the Americans love it.

The Europeans did well in the latter part of the day. Hope they carry on like that tomorrow.

I'm going to type a sentence now that I should like to invite everyone to ignore. Please don't answer. But it is genuinely felt.

Ahem.

Why on earth does anyone ever play, watch or talk about golf, ever?

Thank you.

Steve, why do you bother to post, if you don't like golf?

You can't enjoy everything in life Steve and I guess Golf is one of those things that you do not like.

So I suppose answering your question, is really a waste of time.

Anyway, no play today until at least lunchtime, due to very heavy rain again.

If I had a question, I would want to know why you would put an important event such as this on, in Newport in October, where Atlantic storms give significant rainfall in the autumn, these gradually becoming rarer towards the end of winter. Autumn and summer have often been the wettest seasons in recent times.

I'll get me boat & brolly.

Well gone 11 and I'm in Bristol looking out over our Bill's mother's. Still looking pretty black out there. When the EWCB gave Wales a Test Match they made sure it was the first week in July. THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT!!!

I heard that the Ryder Cup was supposed to be played in September this year but due to US tournaments taking precedent, the date was set back to October. A recipe for a weather-affected competition really as any Welsh resident could have told the organisers. As it's a European team, this event could have taken place anywhere in Europe, such as Lisbon where the weather was a balmy 27c and sunny on Friday. Still, the forecast for this aft and Monday is reasonable so the competition should finish, even though it will overrun into a fourth day for the first time ever.

Indeed you can Steve. do not know why you are Grrrring for. It's surely not worth the effort and will only raise your blood pressure. :-)

Anyway, back to the golf.
Really pleased to see the first 4 back in (Donald/Westwood vs Stricken/Woods) and the gap is narrowed to Europe 5 USA 6. Getting exciting.

I can't deny I am indifferent to golf as a sport to watch, I would rather watch paint dry than see all of those players mooching around wearing the most hideous clothes.

I feel that way about curling too, Patsy. ;-) They both strike me as good games to play, but pretty useless to watch. However, there are many who don't see it that way at all.

OK - here's a question: has the Ryder Cup being in Wales made any of you more likely to visit Wales? Do you think more people know where Wales is because of the Ryder Cup?

I'm only being a bit tongue-in-cheek here. I'd quite like to know. This is the reasoning being put about by government types to justify the financial input.

What an absolute stonking competition. Europe win on the last but one hole.

Some people like myself, can no longer play golf, due to health reasons. So to watch it is the next best thing. It was brilliant. Well done both teams.

And I bravely predicted a Europe win when we were losing.

Well done Monty for captaining Europe - his tactics were just right! He's threatening to play in the next Ryder Cup but he may have a rethink when he comes off Cloud 9.

This thread is quite from the USA side. I am sure there would be more Americans on this thread if they had won. I have always been taught that Americans hate losing.

America came back very strongly on the last day.

Most notable was Tiger woods who completed the first nine in only 29 shots!!!!

His new found sense of responsibility to others seems to have turned him into a better team player, though his individualism in major tournaments may well have suffered for the same reasons ... who knows ... point is that on the last day he played the best golf ever seen!

The young rookie Fowler was another great competitor, who showed gret nerve to sink his putt on the 18th drawing his match with Eduardo Molinari who had been beating him pretty soundly up till around the 15th.

He and Rory McIlroy lived up to their promise as future greats by halving matches under incredible pressure with difficult putts and saving crucial half points for their teams.

But the hero of the day was McDowell, and his putt on the 16th was a textbook example of true grit. The pressure must have been overwhelming ... except somehow it didn't overwhelm him and he kepy his nerve and concentration.

The combination of that moment and his USPGA win earlier in the year will have given him the belief that he can beat anyone on his day. He will be one to keep an eye on!

The whole tournament was utterly thrilling, but what also stood out was the spirit of sportsmanship, fun and camaraderie which didn't undermine in any way the fierce competitiveness of the event.

The USA were in fact Gallant losers, but the reward of winning is that you get the last mention.

And the winners were Europe ... 14 1/2 - 13 1/2

Hi

I have watched many Ryder Cup matches both at the coursesd and latterly on TV.

I can honestly say that this years was the most exciting that I have ever witnessed.

The weather was terrible but most of the players from both sides managed to beat the atrocious conditions and gave the huge galleries something to enjoy.

It went right down to thre wire and congratulations to both teams on a fantastic event.

Congratulations to Europe on narrowly succeeding to beat a determined American team.

Cheers

MikeL2

Lox, that was an excellent summary. Couldn't agree with you more.

Glad to see that I am not the only one who thought it was a thrilling competition this year.

I have to admit, that I thought Europe were going to lose.

I was very impressed with teh quality of the golf.

It's hard to tell if the course is a good one or not on telly, but I thought from what I saw, it looked excellent and made the players work hard to get results.
