My old man used to smack the side of the TV when it got out of hand. I just smacked my puter. The hum of the fan went away... for about ten seconds. I am about to give it a good, swift kick in the arse.

Oh, yeah. I should take it apart and inspect and clean and... smack... I know as soon as I do it'll really get messed up somehow.

well, take it easy....what sounded like a noisy fan awhile back on mine turned out to be a failing power supply.
Whacking it could upset that kinda delicate little hard drive...

Oh...the power supply and the fan are usually part of the same assembly, and can affect each other... I had the unit replaced and took the old one apart and noticed that the fan was pretty hard to move and had worn a bearing of some sort.

Well, there is more than one fan. Until mine buzzes all the time, I am loathe to take the sucker apart.

But... what are youse doing that yer parents did that you thought was odd?

Barbershop singing. Taking vitamins. Procrastinating. Just like mom.

Pull the fan out GNU, put some oil on it or even a dab of vasoline salve will work ... Yea it can be a failing power supply but usually just need a little lube

Not so much doing things, but I find myself saying things that I grew up hearing.

Such as, when something (usually mechanical) won't do what it's supposed to do I find myself yelling, "Go it, you sonofawhore!"
Rumor has it that phrase was uttered often in our family's garage...

I remember one time as a kid I asked my mom "what part of a car is a dirty bastard" whatever part that is , gives dad lots of trouble cause he is always under the car trying to fix it !!

Yeah, that happens, gnu. I picked up some negative stuff from both my parents, but fortunately was able to ditch a whole lot of it by now.

Dan... I am sure Becca could tell similar stories, as she has alluded to in the past. Hehehehee.

My late father could not drive a car well in winter conditions, even though we lived in a snow belt. When confronted by any amount of snow, his approach was, from a standstill, to "gun it" and push the gas pedal rapidly to the floor in an attempt to move forward. If course he got stuck often (I recall he used to spread stove ashes under the car wheels, attempting to get more traction when stuck). But, he never seemed to "get it", that moderation in gradually applying gas from a stand still in snow beats rapid and agressive acceleration.

I never got to talk to him about this matter. So, I will never know where his odd approach came from, whether he strategically thought it out (incorrectly so), or, if he felt tense and challenged by snow and was just over reacting. There are some things about my father that seem puzzling, almost amusing, now, when I look back.

.

    Here you go Gnu,

I saw this guy at Shambala in my mates tea tent.

Don't know how well it comes across on video, but I can tell you that live,
I have never seen a more engaging and charismatic performer.

This was one of his more reflective moments in what is otherwise a side splittingly funny performance.

Becca72 that was not my best sea going string of curses. I save them to peel paint.

I've never been much like my dad....and I hope to god I never turn into my mother....don't think I would look good with middle aged sagging breasts...

Well I know I'm begining to look like my dad, which isn't particularly a good thing, and I sometimes catch myself sounding like him, especially when it comes to my 13 year old daughters' tastes in music and its' neccessary volume.
It seems the more inane and "shouty" the track, the better it benefits from the "full volume" treatment.

Only saving grace is that I was just the same at 13 with my "Dark Side Of The Moon" or "Schools' Out" or whatever it was.
That and the knowledge that I'm not supposed to get it anyway.
(Thank God for that!)

Greg Brown has a song "Same Damn Hat" about his dad...it comes from aline about going to meet his dad at the air port and realizing they are both wearing the same hat.

So, 'Turning into my parents. I am my father'. Are you bragging or complaining??

Are you pissed you smacked the computer?..or smart enough to know to take it apart and fix it??

..and if your Dad would do the same thing...what's the complaint?

Wink,
GfS
