Subject: RE: Joe Hill - RIP From: GUEST,henryp Date: 19 Nov 10 - 12:23 PM My will is easy to decide, For there is nothing to divide. My kin don't need to fuss and moan, "Moss does not cling to a rolling stone." My body? Oh, if I could choose, I would to ashes it reduce, And let the merry breezes blow My dust to where some flowers grow. Perhaps some fading flower then Would come to life and bloom again. This is my last and final will. Good luck to all of you, Joe Hill Written in his cell, November 18, 1915, on the eve of his execution. |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill - RIP (1879-1915) From: Stringsinger Date: 20 Nov 10 - 12:26 PM Joe Hill is a folk hero. He represents the values of many working people. Joe Hillstrom (I've forgotten his Swedish name) was executed by a Utah firing squad for a crime he didn't commit. He was a political prisoner. I remember his history since my father protested his execution in 1915 while standing with a throng in Union Square in New York City. (Later, I stood in that same area pretty much in the 50's to protest the execution by Eisenhower of the Rosenburgs.) Joe's songs will live on as historical documents. Although mention of him is not in the contemporary history textbooks which are bowdlerized by Texas Orwellian rewriters, he will be remembered in song and story long after these textbooks are revised and debunked. |

Subject: RE: Joe Hill - RIP (1879-1915) From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Nov 10 - 12:09 AM Gees, garg, if you knew Mark Ross, you would know that he knows these things. The basic facts of the life of Joe Hill are common knowledge, at least among folkies. They're an essential part of the American Folk Hagiography. Here's the Encyclopedia Britannica entry: Joe Hill also called Joe Hillstrom , original name Joel Emmanuel Hägglund born Oct. 7, 1879, Gävle, Swed. died Nov. 19, 1915, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S. Swedish-born American songwriter and organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW); his execution for an alleged robbery-murder made him a martyr and folk hero in the radical American labour movement. Born into a conservative Lutheran family, all of whom were amateur musicians, Hill left Sweden for the United States in 1902. He drifted around the country, from job to job, and in 1910 joined the San Pedro (Calif.) local of the Industrial Workers of the World, soon becoming its secretary. The following year his first and most famous folksong, "The Preacher and the Slave," appeared in the IWW's Little Red Song Book. It is sung to the melody of "In the Sweet Bye and Bye": You will eat, bye and bye In that glorious land above the sky; Work and pray, live on hay, You'll get pie in the sky when you die. Most of his songs dealt with migratory workers, immigrant sweatshop workers, and railway employees; and all were tinged with humour and simple Marxism. In January 1914, while staying with friends in Salt Lake City, Hill was arrested and charged with the murder of a grocer and his son who had been killed during a robbery. The trial that followed was very confusing. The prosecution's case was based on circumstantial evidence and depended almost entirely on the fact that Hill had gone to a doctor to be treated for a gunshot wound several hours after the murders had occurred. Hill claimed that he had received the wound in a quarrel over a woman, whom he refused to identify in the interest of protecting her honour. The jury found him guilty, and the numerous legal appeals made on Hill's behalf were unavailing. Despite mass demonstrations and accusations that he had been convicted because of his radicalism and despite an appeal to the Utah governor from Pres. Woodrow Wilson, Hill was executed by a firing squad. On Nov. 18, 1915, the night before his death, he telegraphed IWW leader Big Bill Haywood: "Goodbye Bill. I die like a true rebel. Don't waste time in mourning. Organize." Hill was commemorated in a famous ballad bearing his name, written in 1925 by poet Alfred Hays. |
Subject: RE: Joe Hill - RIP (1879-1915) From: Dan Schatz Date: 21 Nov 10 - 12:14 AM I'd consider Mark a Trustworthy Source on this one. Below is the New York Times article, though it doesn't mention his birth name: Hillstrom Is Cremated; Attacks On Utah Officials Feature Funeral Of I. W. W. Poet. Photo: http://www.bloomington.in.us/~mitch/iww/images/JoeHill.gif FROM: The New York Times (November 26th 1915) ~ Special to The Times CHICAGO, Ill., Nov. 25 Joseph Hillstrom, alias Joe Hill, poet laureate of the I. W. W., received about such a funeral today as he would have desired, according to his friends. Anarchists, Nihilists, some Socialists, "bums" and hoboes generally, of whom less than 10 per cent were American, assembled for the ceremony in the West Side Auditorium. Three thousand persons managed to get inside, while outside twice as many battled with the police to get in. The red flag floated undisturbed at every turn. The pine coffin containing the body of the man executed by the Utah authorities for murder, was draped in a red flag. There was no touch of religion in the ceremony. Bitter attacks upon the existing social system and threats against the Utah authorities were made by the orators. The gathering was greatly augmented by the striking garment workers, who chose the occasion for a demonstration, passing contribution boxes and peddling literature. On a banner that hung over the coffin was this inscription: IN MEMORIAM, JOE HILL We never forget Murdered by the authorities of the State of Utah, Nov. 19, 1915 The ceremonies were opened by a quartette, clad in overalls, which sang one of Hillstrom's songs. Then a Polish girl, introduced as the "Rebel Girl," by W.D. Haywood, sang a song written by Hillstrom while awaiting execution and dedicated to his sweetheart. Jim Larkin, the Urban labor leader, and Haywood assailed the officials of Utah. Judge Hilton of Denver warned Utah that a day of reckoning was coming. Eight men then shouldered the coffin and led a street procession nearly a mile in length. All along the line of march the crowd yelled and sang Hillstrom's songs. Police battled with the disorderly members all the way to the railway station. At Graceland Cemetery more addresses were made. The body was then cremated and the ashes will be delivered to the I.W.W. for distribution. I.W.W. Memorial for Hillstrom Speakers at a memorial meeting yesterday of the I.W.W. for Joseph Hillstrom, poet of the organization, who paid the death penalty for murder in Utah recently, asserted that Hillstrom had been put to death because the Church, the army, and capital been stung to the quick by the satire of Hillstrom's poems. "If the economic power of the working classes were properly brought home to the capitalist," Frank Evers, a British subject, said, "he would think hard enough to prevent the murder of any 'Joe Hill.'"
