Subject: 'Random' Halleluja Chorus in PA Macy's From: YorkshireYankee Date: 30 Nov 10 - 02:21 PM Just came across this: Opera Company of Philadelphia Rallies Over 650 Singers To Surprise Macy's Shoppers Excerpts from the accompanying article (BF added by me): On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia kicked off National Opera Week by partnering with Macy's and John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to produce one of Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" on a grand scale in Philadelphia. What I like best about watching the video is seeing so many folks joining in -- many with great gusto -- who (I think) are not actually choristers... |
Subject: RE: 'Random' Halleluja Chorus in PA Macy's From: Les from Hull Date: 30 Nov 10 - 02:33 PM We used to sing 'Aluminium, Aluminium'. I don't suppose that would work in the US. |
Subject: RE: 'Random' Halleluja Chorus in PA Macy's From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Nov 10 - 02:56 PM Thanks very much Yorkshire Yankee. The pianist for my church, a Chinese graduate student, told me sadly that most young people think 'classical music sucks.' I'm going to send her this video to give her hope. |
Subject: RE: Hallelujah Chorus-Flash Mob Christmas Videos From: Joe Offer Date: 30 Nov 10 - 04:15 PM The Flash Mob is a delightful phenomenon....for now. I suppose it will get overdone and tedious in a year or two, but it's really great for now. We had a number of threads on the Commando Trad flash mobs last summer, and I suppose we'll have a number of threads on various Christmas flash mobs during the coming month. I'll probably combine most of the threads into this one. I'd like to see links to all of the Christmas flash mob videos people discover, but not necessarily a new thread for each discovery. I especially like the Messiah in the YouTube Link in the first message. It gave me a good laugh to see a woman talking on a cell phone, and then breaking into song. I also like the Sound of Music Flash Mob in the train station in Antwerp, Belgium. -Joe Scrooge- |

Subject: RE: Hallelujah Chorus/Flash Mob Christmas Videos From: Joe Offer Date: 08 Dec 10 - 01:02 AM The largest shopping mall in Sacramento was closed after an arson fire at the beginning of November. It's in the process of reopening, and the Sacramento Choral Society is organizing a Flash Mob Hallelujah Chorus there. The information is here (click), including links to practice MIDI files for much of the Messiah. I'm tempted to go. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Hallelujah Chorus/Flash Mob Christmas Videos From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 08 Dec 10 - 02:03 PM Here's a link to an event at a mall food court http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkYZ6rbPU2M&feature=related Funny thing. At one point the 'janitor' sings "I'm the janitor, the man you all ignore." I've often read comments like "Nobody notices the janitor - or waiter - or servant. But I do. Sorry to have to rattle the bars of his cage, but I definitely noticed him before he became one of the 'agents.' |

Subject: RE: Hallelujah Chorus/Flash Mob Christmas Videos From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Dec 10 - 03:13 AM My wife and I went to a "flash mob" performance of the "Hallelujah Chorus" at the local mall this evening. We got to the entrance of the mall grounds, and were turned away by police. The story is here (click). As we approached the mall, freeway traffic was backed up for a couple of miles in three directions. I understand some singers had come from a hundred miles away. I took a back route and parked across the road from the mall about fifteen minutes before the 7:30 PM performance time. Turns out the mall was so full of singers that they were afraid the floors would collapse, so they evacuated the building at 6:45 PM. The newspaper Website has a video. Many of the people performed the "Hallelujah Chorus" outside the mall building, but we couldn't get close enough to see or participate. The performance was intended to show support for the mall, which is still partially closed after an arson fire closed the entire mall last month. Instead, merchants lost income for another night's business. This wasn't a true "flash mob" performance, and that's probably why this was a problem. The performance was done with permission from the mall owners, and had been advertised over the Internet for weeks; so that's why such a large crowd showed up. It was a good idea, but it was a mess. So my wife went shopping across the street from the mall, and I took a nap in the car. It was inspiring to see how many people had come to sing. I wonder what it would have sounded like if all of us had been able to be there. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Hallelujah Chorus/Flash Mob Christmas Videos From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Dec 10 - 12:44 PM Kansas City had an event on Sunday. 475 people (or maybe many more, the newspaper thought) showed up at Crown Center to sing the Hallelujah Chorus. It shows how many fine singers we have in our country, and how much they long to sing. I was amazed that so many were doing it without any music. There are a number of amateur videos of this on YouTube, with shakey images and poor sound. The newspaper's video is the most expert, but for some damn reason they interviewed people WHILE the singing was going on. Those twerps! They just don't get it that the object of it all is to experience fine music. (I wanted to be there, but had arranged for music-playing with my friends weeks before.) |
