Subject: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: open mike Date: 20 Dec 10 - 02:40 PM I thought this story was creepy and wierd--until i read the last line (now it is even creepier and wierder) Police: Small human foot washes ashore in Wash. The Associated Press Tuesday, December 14, 2010; 9:42 PM TACOMA, Wash. -- Authorities are seeking more information about a small human foot that washed ashore in Washington state. Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum (FULL-jum) said Tuesday the right foot was still inside a boy's size 6 "OzArk Trail" hiking boot, and likely belonged to a juvenile or small adult. He says the boots were sold in Walmart stores from 2004 to 2005. The foot found early last week is believed to have floated in from either the Puyallup River or Puget Sound. It's the second to wash ashore in Washington state in four months. In late August, a right foot believed to be that of a woman or child washed up on a beach in Whidbey Island, about 70 miles north of Tacoma. Fulghum says police don't yet know if the cases are linked, or if they have any connection to cases in British Columbia, where seven feet have washed ashore in the past four years. yikes! I was laughing, but now you've challenged me - I realise i haven't a foot to stand on. In England, we do(some of us) have strange enjoyments - by now the papers would be calling him 'the plates of meat killer' - and people would be writing up with theories about it being a mad chiropodist with revolutionary treatments. myself I think - its probably a serial killer preying on the footloose and fancy free. |

Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: GUEST,Neil D Date: 21 Dec 10 - 12:36 PM Actually, there may not be a culprit. There have been 10 feet found washed ashore in the Pacific Northwest since August, 2007 and several have proven to have been disarticulated from bodies due to decay. Foul play hasn't been ruled out but as of now there is no evidence of it. There is even one theory that these may be from submerged victims of the giant Indonesia tsunami since the shoes seem to pre-date that incident. Here is a wikipedia article about it. |
Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Dec 10 - 01:21 PM Actually, Neil, that makes a lot of sense. The only reason these were found at all is because they were firmly embedded in a flotation device - a sneaker. If this is the case, feet from the tsunami, it makes the global water system all the more complex and astonishing. Something we don't pay enough attention to. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: GUEST,mg Date: 21 Dec 10 - 01:25 PM But could they not tell if people were mainly Indonesian, from tsunami, or Chinese perhaps from immigration gone bad, or of mixed background such as many people from west coast NA would be? DNA tests should show basic heritage should they not? mg |
Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: Little Robyn Date: 21 Dec 10 - 01:48 PM It happened in Cornwall when I was there in 1972. I was staying at a Bed and Breakfast place in Padstow and they had friends who ran a B&B at Trevone, not very far away. A family had been staying there and two lads (one 12, the other about 18) went for a walk around the cliffs. They were fooling about, (as teenage boys do) and the younger boy slipped into the sea. The older boy tried to rescue him but when he couldn't reach him, he ran back to Trevone to get help. By the time help arrived there was no sign of the boy. The family stayed for a few days longer in case he turned up but they never saw him again. BUT a couple of months later..... his shoe washed up on the beach, complete with a foot inside! There were a lot of seals around the coast at the time! Yum! I've just thought - that little boy would be 50 now! Robyn |
Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: GUEST,999 Date: 21 Dec 10 - 02:21 PM I would expect that the police there should be letting the RCMP in British Columbia know about it. Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: Don Firth Date: 21 Dec 10 - 04:20 PM From the Wikipedia article Neil linked to: ". . . human feet [post-mortem] have a tendency to become adipocere (a soap-like substance formed from body fat), which makes it hard for forensic scientists to find clues." I don't know for sure, but this may affect the efficacy of DNA testing. As far as carnivorous critters in Puget Sound that could be dangerous to humans (presuming that such carnivorous critters could get at them), Great White Sharks (made famous in the movie "Jaws") do cruise the Pacific Coast of the United States. All the world's oceans, in fact. They're generally found in abundance off the coast of California, particularly around the San Francisco Bay area, which is a breeding ground for seals (Seal Rocks, et al.). Great Whites seem to regard seals the way many humans look upon filet mignon. Although they may have a taste for humans also, the attacks on humans in the Bay Area are generally attributed to the shark mistaking a swimmer, especially adorned in a wet-suit, for a tasty seal. An occasional Great White has been spotted in Puget Sound. But, happily, not very often. One breed of shark that seems to be indigenous to the area (Puget Sound, the Georgia Strait) is the primitive six-gilled shark. These, ichthyologists say, have been around for a good 200 million years. They can get pretty big, up to around 18 feet. They're sluggish and slow-moving, although capable of sudden bursts of speed when going after prey. But they generally hang out at considerable depths. I haven't heard of any attacks on humans by six-gilled sharks. Unless, of course. . . . Orca (killer whales) like to hang out in Puget Sound. There are several resident "families" here, and although they seem quite fond of salmon, they do go after harbor seals. I don't think I've ever heard of any attacks on humans by Orcas. Once, as a teenager, when my Dad and I were fishing off the west coast of Whidbey Island, we found ourselves surrounded by a pod of Orca. All around our 16 foot boat, great black fins rising up out of the water and vanishing again. Dad remarked, "Well, there goes the fishing! When those things show up, all the salmon head for the summit of Mount Rainier!" Then one breached, about fifty feet from us (Classic shot!), cleared the water, and belly-flopped, setting us to rocking. Dad said, "Let's go get breakfast!" We reeled in our lines, he cranked up the outboard motor, and we headed in to Bush Point. Puget Sound and environs is to octopi what Florida is to senior citizens. There are a lot of them around here and they can get pretty big. Not giant squid big, but I know someone who caught one, and when spread out on the dock, it measured 14 feet from tentacle-tip to tentacle-tip. But rather than the "chilling monster of the deep," made famous as the ultimate undersea horror in many movies ("Under the Twelve-Mile Reef"), they tend to be pretty shy. They like to wedge themselves into some kind of nook or hole and lasso passing fish with a tentacle. Not surprising behavior when you realize that the octopus is actually related, believe it or not, to the oyster, who sits there in his shell and waits for the food to be delivered. Consider such fairly recent findings, such as the Pacific Ocean gyre, where plastic bags and all sorts of other crap tend to gather, along with such things as the shipping containers of rubber duckies—actually, yellow plastic ducks, suitable for Junior's bath—that went overboard somewhere in the Pacific. With the many gyres and currents in the world's oceans, some time later they began appearing on beaches. Japan. North and South America, no surprise there. But in the Arctic Ocean? Around to the Atlantic. On the east coast of the United States. Washed up on the beaches of Portugal? France? Cornwall? Great armadas of them washing up on the coasts of Ireland. All kinds of unexpected places. Although it added to the general pollution of the oceans, the Great Yellow Plastic Duck Spill gave oceanographers a lot of data to work on about ocean currents. So. . . . Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: shoe with foot in it washes ashore in WA From: mousethief Date: 21 Dec 10 - 04:32 PM My parents had one of those ducks! They found it on the beach where they summer at Lopez Island. It had LEDs inside, and supposedly when you squeezed something it lit up. Apparently the switch in the squeeze mechanism was busted, but not the light-up circuits. They put it on the TV, and every time you turned the TV off, it would flash different colored LEDs for a few seconds. |
