Subject: BS: Thank you Santa - Christmas 2010
From: Sandra in Sydney
Date: 24 Dec 10 - 08:21 AM

As the parcel had been opened by Oz Quarantine, I just had to open it when midnight arrived.

Considering there are a few clues (concert notices for 2 perfomances by Animaterra Women's Chorus, & 2 handmade CDs, & a CD by Allison & Hunt - hmmmm, big clue there) I assume it was sent by Animaterra!

The straw ornament that attracted official notice is a pair of pincushions & thimble holders in the form of sandals
1 beautiful purple silk scarf (I do love silk)
A lovely tin with suns, moons, planets, shooting stars on teh lid
A marvellous mobile of the Seven Rainbow Dancers - Tin art by Tin Lizzie
A little piece (2 pieces) of luxury - bath & shower gelee + moisturizing lotion
A reproduction of mid 19th Century winterscene for which I will find a frame (easy) & a place to put it (not so easy)

Thankyou, very thoughtful Santa Animaterra

Ah ha, Sandra. Might have known you'd beat me to it. I was good and went to bed early so it's 8.00am here now and I'm not the first to open my present.

Sarah -- Sarah the Flute -- Thank you so much. I have such wonderful and lovingly collected presents.
Little wooden raindeer, a bunny in the snow key ring -- I just love lots of presents all with their own wrappings -- cds I've yet to listen to -- how did you know I liked the Albion Band? -- and your own -- I'm so keen to listen to that, lots of local booklets about your wild places.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I'll take the day to listen to and read everything.
Have a lovely Christmas my wonderful Santa.
from and with Joy

I am thrilled - silver earrings with turquoise teardrops not to mention a pile of crappe - in chocolate. But the real thrill - a re-write of A Planet Called Treason. I did not know it existed. I can't wait to read it. And who clued you in to my addiction to fruit gels and gummy candy?
Thank you, Santa - Art Brookes, I think.

A wonderful set of presents from Claire Bear. I got what I always try to ask for. Local or personal music some aspects of local history I might not know and creative clues ansd writing leading up to it all. A merry chase and a great finale with everything (but the nuts)involving her family members as part of their creation. All from a Getaway friend from the Left Coast. I'll be digging for musical and literary gold for some time, and not at any sort of rush.

In the past, I've gotten to learn much about England, Canada and Wales and even get new songs to add to my repetoire. I have been extremely fortunate in my draw of Santas and my luck has continued. Thanks again for the CDs, book and nuts!

Your Satisfied Smiling Santee,
Severn

Good call, Sinsull, except that Santa and Mrs. Claus worked together on both of our assignments this year. Yup, he bought the "crappe"--I had something a little less graphic in mind! You, yourself, clued us in about the fruit gels--thanks. Merry Holidays, and I'm glad you're pleased.

Oh, Sinsull, my Santa - thank you so much! What a wonderful selection of things to explore! The double CD will take a while to listen to properly, but contains songs sung by many friends. The book is in my growing pile of books to be read (today the pile has shot up). The lobster has been suspended from our kitchen ceiling, in a place of high honour, but we're still pondering over where to put the rather odd moose ... and as for the worry dolls with added nun ...The mushrooms will find a home in a casserole before too long, I'm sure (and I'll have to keep them a secret from my husband, who doesn't like mushrooms) and the Lindt reindeer will be eaten very soon, I know.
Thank you for your thoughtfulness and careful choice of gifts - and the leaflets and information about Portland made me want to come back as soon as we can find a way. For I have been to Maine before, on several occasions, to stay with Julia and Fred in Round Pond - and once to have the high honour of being part of the RingTum.

Thank you!

Well, I would like to thank the incredible generosity and thoughtfulness of JennieG, who not only sent me a 2011 calender of the "down under" New England, a bar of dark chocolate, a Tamworth bumper sticker (soon to grace our Ford van, aka the Land Boat, aka the tour-mobile), a fridge memo pad, a book of 70 chocolate recipes from the Australian Women's Monthly, and the Tamworth region official guidebook- in other words, local goodies that give a real sense and flavor (literally!) of her region, she also sent a sweet note telling me about the region and herself....

and the whole thing arrived 3 weeks before Christmas!!

...but I managed to restrain myself and wait until this morning. Thanks so much, JennieG!

Hollowfox: Thanks for the gifts. The cookbooks were just what I wanted and they look pretty interesting. From what I read, it looks like there's enough to keep me busy for a while. The postcards are great, and the maple syrup is always welcome in my house. I'll listen to the CD on my way up to MA tomorrow.

By the way, I'm your secret Santa. Due to medical problems that I won't go into in detail, I'm a little slow at getting things done. I'll be away until Dec. 30 and will mail your gifts out on Dec. 31.

Whee! My Santa is Barb'ry, and she did herself up proud! Not only did I get a HUGE Kendal Mint Cake (yum!) and a lovely calendar with pictures of Northwest England, but also a bottle of "Lancashire Sauce"(sounds interesting -- I'm eager to try it!) AND a tin of "Edradour Single Highland Malt Whisky Fudge"! What a concept -- booze and chocolate! Two of the major food groups in one! I love the card with all the lore about the "kissing bough," too.

Thank you so much, Barb'ry! I know I didn't meet you at Pinewoods, because I haven't been to Pinewoods in a great many years. Were you with the group of Shellbacks came to the Getaway? If so, I must have met you then.

I've been to a couple of the places pictured in the calendar (Liverpool and Blackpool), and perhaps one of these years I'll get back over the pond to see the rest!

Thank you, thank you! I hope you had a lovely Christmas and that 2011 will be extra good for you.

Nancy

Well, I got a whole bunch of stuff, all packed into a stocking...a book of short bios, food, chocolate, more food, more chocolate, a pencil sharpener shaped like a nose, , odd chotchkies, and a CD of "The Boarding Party", with liner notes by Nancy King. Could she be my Secret Santa?

Thank you Santa for my lovely gifts, the notelets are lovely, the book looks really interesting, the shots glass is now my sherry glass and the lobster we will find a home for....probably in the motorhome so it can come to all the festivals with us. The blueberries look yummy.......I have resisted the temptation to eat them yet, they will be my special New Years Eve treat. I'm guessing that my santa is Jacqui C? It has to be someone in that vicinity....anyway, thank you so much, it was a real adventure to open it on Christmas day. Cheers, Lucy x

I am so ashamed! Yes, I got it, I love it--especially the CD and the lovely cards and the goodies, some of which are gone already. The cotton candy, though--maple flavored cotton candy--is waiting until I visit either my sister or my daughter--they both love cotton candy and maple flavor. The granite has an honored place on a horizontal surface--it shares this place with a few other presents from Santas through the years, so it's in good company. I meant to write Christmas morning, but I'm computer illiterate, so I was going to ask Art to set me up, and it slipped my mind. Thank you, thank you, thank you! And thanks for the brochures, in case we ever get out your way, as we hope to.

I opened my pressie this morning. Looking at the contents I am pretty sure that Mr and/or Mrs Brooks were responsible. Thank you!

I got a beautiful pair of earrings, which I am wearing right now and which will definitely be among my favourites, some wonderfully soft yarn, which will most likely become a scarf before too long and a craftwork magazine with two crochet patterns that I am itching to try out, together with a fascinating article on the history of silk, which kept me stuck in the chair this morning when I should have been unpacking my bags!

I love all my gifts - thank you Art and Jen for being so thoughtful.

Jenn, I'll have to send you a postcard which I forgot to enclose -- showing you in the overall scheme of things where New Hampshuh (sometimes known as "Cow Hampshuh" but not by me, as I come from Wisconsin, the REAL dairy state!) is.

Glad you liked the stuff. Hope you and Art can make it to The Press Room sometime!

At last, a few minutes to myself and time to confess that JACQUI.C was MY Secret Santa *grin*

And what a wonderful lots of goodies I received from her! I can't begin to describe my delight on opening all the wonderful gifts that Jacqui had so thoughtfully provided and wrapped for me. I have been soooo spoilt - It was a wonderful experience and I understand that Micca has photos of the whole sequence of events!!

AND how devious is my Santa? When we met while she was this side of the pond she gave me a huge box to give to Micca on Christmas Day. Well, after her reminder phone call he opened the box and promptly gave the contents back to me! How devious is that? Jacqui strikes again *grin*

The list of her thoughtful gifts is almost endless and all shall be treasured but the hightlights were:

a delicate black Jacqui shawl
a beautiful embroidered bag for my cross-stich work to live in
5, yes 5 pairs of lovely earrings, all with spirals!
a fabulous Hometown collection calendar

and although I was already pretty sure, to top it all off I now have Kendall's CD - Seagulls and Summer People.

What a spoilt Santee I have been, thank you so much Sister Jacqui!!!

My pleasure Hilary - I get so much fun out of the devious bits, when they can be arranged.

I got home to a package FROM my Santee! A Max's Escapade t-shirt and a book of crochet stitches that I have actually been lusting after for some time. How good is that? I love my Evil Sisters! Thank you Hils - that was a lovely surprise to come home to.

So glad you got your parcel Jacqui, I couldn't figure out a way of sending it back with you. I'll need to brush up on the deviousness bit, will you be holding a masterclass??

I'd like to thank Stilly River Sage for stepping in and giving us this gift of Secret Santa this year! And also Liz for having looked after us in previous years too. Love & hugs to both of them!!!

I was hoping this would be personally delivered by a friendly Elf but snow overtook his sleigh and he came up with Plan B, C, D etc etc. Hopefully it will be with you soon. I understand it has had a very exciting if somewhat circuitous route! Hope it is worth waiting for, especially the very lumpy bit.

There seems to be quite an elf network at play out there!

I found this was fun, something I wasn't really expecting, having never done this kind of thing before. After a little discussion and cutting out two lists with instructions, I taped a master list together and sent it on it's way. It has been a real pleasure to read along as several threads grew around the project, with teasing and delivery and pleasure as the result. I can't think of the last time something as relatively simple set off such a volume of play.

I wonder if the pressure of getting it done quickly didn't maybe help people? If we get this early, then we have so much time, it's easy to put it off for a while. And forget or be late. I'm sure next fall the discussion will come up on timing, so if anyone looks back, they might want to compare the completion rate to years past.

I dunno about it being a good thing to have started as late as we did. I missed the fun of having time for lots of odd hints and being able to have friends send postcards to my santee from all over the country. (There is getting to be quite a group of people out there with hand-made Indian earrings now, though.) Yes, I'm in for next year.

I didn't receive any real hints on the SS thread (although from the one comment made, I deduced the possibility of my gift coming from the UK via Jacqui)...and that's how it arrived on this side of the pond. Then Jeri transferred the gift bag from Maine to New Hampshire, and, ta da!, yesterday I received it. Definitely worth waiting for! Especially the "lumpy bit"!!!

Although there were no identity hints on the thread and my Santa didn't come right out and sign the card, etc., there were plenty of hints and I knew right away that it must be from Cats in Cornwall.

Thank you so much! What a delightful collection of goodies! The stone from the vicinity of the Trethevy Coit is a true treasure -- I'll place it on my shelves of lithic curiosities. And I love the old photographs in "Around Padstow" and I've already read it through and passed it over to Tom who is enjoying, especially, the photos of life boats, fishing boats and other sailing vessels. And the signature pieces -- the ceramic cat sculpture and the fabric cat artwork will make a fine addition to my collection of catobilia. Local fudge (even the packaging is a lovely, a wee bottle of sloe gin, and a glycerine soap.

Thank you, Cats!

A real pleasure, Linn.   Trethevy Quoit [http://www.historic-cornwall.org.uk/a2m/neolithic/chambered_tomb/trethevy_quoit/trethevy_quoit.htm] is a Bronze Age Burial site close to here and I was walking there a few days before sending your parcel thinking about you and that piece just jumped out at me and said 'send me to Linn' so I did! It was the closest I could get to anything churchyardy and tombstoney! Ths cat sculpture and bag came from Boscastle when I took Jacqui and Micca there. We were all in on choosing special things for you. xx

It's a special subset of Mudcatters that takes great care in selecting and shipping rocks around the world to each other. I have one of Linn's pieces of granite, and I think I sent her a fossil sea urchin?

I have been remiss in not publicly thanking my generous benefactor, W Y S I W Y G, for he passel o'goodies, which included treats not only for me but for my son as well. There were musical selections, audiobooks, candy, information about her area, fresh garlic from a friend's garden (and I have a nagging feeling I'm forgetting something) ... altogether a bounty unexpected. What's more, this was accompanied by an account of some of her family's holiday traditions that I'm itching to reciprocate (Just haven't had the time all week--sorry!).

Heaps of blessings upon my Santa and all Winter Warmers

Thank you Santa - the package arrived today which was a surprise, considering we normally have no Saturday mail delivery! Did you fly all the way over here to pop it into our mailbox?

Thank you so much for the beautiful beadwork, it is just lovely, and in my favourite colours too. Our social life will be busy soon so the lovely trinkets will certainly be useful, I shall feel very glamorous! The star....well, it's a toss-up as to whether it will be kept for next Christmas or hung in my sewing room to enjoy all year round, I suspect the latter because it is so pretty. And the straw weaving - am I correct in calling it a corn dolly? - so interesting and intricate, can also go in there. I know you are Lucy but please forgive me, I haven't yet guessed your nom de Mudcat!

Cheers from a very grateful
JennieG

Ayuh, Stilly. You sent me a wonderful fossil sea urchin. The chunk o' granite I sent her (want one, Cats?) is full of deep red garnets. I harvested the chunks from the rock formation at the foot of our road after the town blew it up because it interfered with visibility on the road. (Granted, night was safer -- you could see the headlights of oncoming cars. What we always did in the daytime was honk our horns to warn oncoming traffic.)

Cats, you were wildly successful in choosing treasures for me! (What a crew you had helping!)

New Hampshire is "The Granite State" -- despite the fact that our iconic "Old Man of the Mountain" collapsed one foggy morning in May of 2003. Profile

We're sitting on top of a bunch of granite composed of quartz, feldspar, mica, a bit of hornblende and, yes, some lovely garnets, if you're lucky. Nottingham is located in the southeastern part of New Hampshire, midway (and uphill) between Portsmouth on the seacoast and Concord, the state capital (located in a river valley).

A few years back my Secret Santee was Bee-dubya-ell who lives in a part of Florida with no rocks -- he was thrilled with the garnet granite.

Dear Dan

When last seen your parcel was in the hands of a hugely bearded man wearing a hat.

I understand he handed it to an offical of the Place for Parking Parcels. It is to be hoped it has been released since the official label indicated it contained no contraband and sent on it's way via one of those metal tubes which draw in our sky.

I hope it reaches you before too long and the contents are acceptable.

Somehow, these late messages always remind me of the occasion when I was in the Army and stationed overseas in a very hot and humid location. Herself sent me a care package containing, among other things, a hard sausage and some cheese. Because of one thing and another, it took almost two months to reach me; when it finally arrived, I got a desperate call from the mail room to come and get it before they had to call the guys in the white space suits to decontaminate the entire area.

My Christmas parcel from my Christmas 2009 Secret Santa, Cats, was delivered to us yesterday by Jacqui and Kendall.

Santa had sent my original parcel in good time and it had arrived safely early in December, 2009. I was looking forward to delving into it but alas, it vanished in the fire.

Thank you to Cats for her generosity in seeking out and sending along a very close approximation of the original gifts; fudge, beautiful herb markers complete with seeds, a lovely homemade card, and a cookbook crammed full of recipes from the South-West of England. Now I'm even more impatient to have a real kitchen again!

Thanks to Santa Cats and her charming elves!

Maeve and Truelove, across the sea in Maine

I know your parcel got posted. I've a bit of paper here tells me so!

At the time Britain had varies piles of parcels in 'Sno-go' groups and we can only hope that it has now been discovered. If it doesn't turn up in another couple of weeks let me know and I shall invent you another which will have some similar, but not all, items as some are unobtainable again.

Sorry this has happened.

However I know how you feel as I haven't had a parcel from my Secret Santa either.

Lots of love and hugs

The status of our Santa Sacks is this:

Everything that was supposed to be shipped WAS shipped, but there is a strong possibility of some shunting of packages into snowy backwaters for a little while because of the simply awful weather in a few places.

This is a clue, for those who haven't received anything yet. Your package had to travel a long, long way, over a very large body of water.

I'll give it a couple of more days, but I'm working on the list.

THANK YOU SANTA! I came home late last night to find your wonderfully put together, historic, folkloric, artistic and musical collection of gifts! What lovely work you did on those earrings (for my wife - not really my style)- and I can't wait to delve into the mysteries of the songbook you sent. I'm glad it finally made it through the snow and attendant postal kerfuffle!

Warmly,

Glad it finally made it to you Dan - I think I might have had bother getting another 1950's copy of the National Songbook. Now you can really irritate some people :-) Askern was the local pit to us - you wouldn't even think there had been that and a big coking works anymore as it's all landscaped over.

I'm pleased your wife likes the roundabout ponies. They are fun to make and just that little bit 'different'.

Have fun with it all.
