Kind thoughts sought.

On Monday I had laproscopic surgery for a paraesophageal hernia*. Immediately in post-op, both of my hands went numb apparently (nobody knows for sure) through some combination of anaesthetic and arm positioning during the surgery. This has mostly subsided except for some tingling and uncoordination which makes typing difficult, writing illegible, and playing the guitar impossible.

Today everything has started to go blurry, which could be caused by a number of things including the pain meds, lack of nutrition, lack of hydration (at this point in the recovery i can only have lukewarm liquids with the viscosity of water), etc. Choosing between pain and potential blindness, I am choosing pain which is no fun.

For some reason (cant' imagine) I'm feeling somewhat sorry for myself.

So kind thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

FOOTNOTE NOT FOR THE SQUEAMISH
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
*this means in my case that about 1/2 of my stomach had snuck up through the hole in my diaphragm that the esophagus comes through, and was holding unnatural converse in my chest cavity with my lungs and heart. Surgery involved yanking it back down, closing the extralarge hole, and wrapping the top of my stomach around the bottom of my esophagus to provide a better valve there (which was not performing to specs).

I`m with Adrien on that, mousethief. I think a good joke would hurt more than help, so I`ll leave that for another time when you DO feel better.

You`re gonna recover, but I`d guess that chips and peanuts are not part of your diet for a while. It`s one darned good thing you got diagnosed when you did, mt. Follow the doctor`s orders and get well.

Best wishes to you,

Bruce

{{{Alex}}}} Glad you asked! I give thanks for your swift and complete healing.

If you can, find a good osteopath to do some soft manipulation on your neck, shoulders, and back. Surgical positions, along with nasty meds, can really cause problems with muscles, tension, eyesight, etc. I didn't know why shoulders hurt so much and my hands went numb after surgey until they told me they used the "crucifix" position on me. A good massage therapist or osteo can really help.

The operation sounds as difficult as tying a windsor knot inside your body with 2 foot forcepts.

I had a mere thumb go numb and it took over 3 days for it to come back. All that time I kept thinking sensation might never return.
It did.
Be it from lack of oxygen or stretched or even broken nerves, they all heal unless they are necrotic, which obviiously is not the case.
I don't know why but many people think nerves do not heal.
Its only certain brain cells that won't return after trauma.

A top notch chiropractor or good osteo doc sound like fair suggestions if days turn into weeks.

Meanwhile here is a funny post today

I would refudiate that Sarah Palin intended to insinuize that the false accussationing of the murderage of the young Christian girl was alledgedly done by Jews to either drink her blood or kinda enslave.

I think she just kinda doesn;t know a whole lot, but thats OK cuz theres a whole buncha junk she does know about, you betcha.

to the tune Favorite things

Pit bulls with lipstick
and big mama grizzles
dresses from Nordstrum
and pissing off lefties
There is a lot Sarah Palin can do
Just don't you ask her to list them for you

When the news stings
when the vote swings
when she's feelin low
she is reminded of favorite things
and makes up a new low blow.

I had the same surgery, for the very same thing about 9 yrs. ago. You do feel quite miserable during the early stages of recovery, however, it was the best surgery I ever had. I do not regret having it done one bit. A word to the wise, when you do try to eat solids, go very slowly, and chew extremely well, the esophagus tends to spasm when going to solids at first. Best of luck, take care of yourself and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

That was my thought too, Bruce. I would imagine that by the time you got your diagnosis, Alex, you did not feel at all well. it must have been a relief to get an answer.

I've heard of a 'tummy tuck' Bill D

pssst, Bill. This sounds much more like a 'tummy yank'.

Would you like to share a room with Spaw?" SINS   Alex probably needs a quiet room for awhile, Sins.

Mousethief, (I'm still not quite clear on whether you steal rodents or if you are one, yourself.) I hope your symptoms will all dissipate rapidly. A surgeon told me once that it is no wonder that patients are sore and achy after surgery, that their innards are handled in ways that they never expected to have to go through. Get better fast and the very next step is well.

Mousethief is the title of a character in a kids' book ("Mossflower" by Brian Jacques) whose name is Gonff (Yiddish for "thief") and who is a mouse who steals. A sort of Robin Hood character who steals from the evil wildcat overlords and gives back (since it was stolen from them in the first place) to the woodland critters. But I also identify with the Saturday-morning cartoon character Savoir Faire. :)

My thoughts are with you Mousethief. After coronary bypass surgery I had the mother of all stiff necks for a long time even after I was pretty much otherwise recovered. I realize now it's like katlaughing said about the position they put your body in during surgery. This very painful and restrictive neck condition lasted for weeks but eventually went away. Best of luck to you.

Mousethief, my heart goes out to you. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery. I have had my own medical nightmares and bouts with self-pity and depression. their Bad Breath and Beyond coupons, or maybe get used to solids by
getting dozens of gift cards for IHOP or Big Fat Al's Pork Palace. ??

IF you take Palin killers be sure to get the kind that have absolutely NO tylenol in them.
They are tiny but mighty, the kind Mighty Mousethief would take before he sang.
IF they make you sing take care not to tear yout 10 stitches.

Are you the Alex referred to in the 'blackbird song' thread?

"Lyr Req: 'Whur be yon blackbird too?'
From: GUEST
Date: 08 May 08 - 07:07 AM

This was, and likely still is, the favorite drinking (drunken) song of Alex Everitt, well-respected Mousehole jeweler and 80s Hawaii party animal and roommate."

If so, coming from a mousehole, that would explain the 'mouse' part of your name. If not, it's a nice coincidence.

That's a very funny coincidence! Especially since one of my family names is almost "Everitt". But I've never been in Hawaii, in the 80s or otherwise. Nor have I ever sung "Whur be yon blackbird too" (nor heard it, alas). Nor (alas) am I a jeweler.

I wonder where "Mousehole" is.

Dear, dear me! I am sorry to hear this, and I hope you'll soon recover fully. But let the healing come in its own good time, and don't rush things!

All the same I'd try to get out of that Mudcat Recovery Ward before Nurse Ratched arrives....

Smart Alex

Our mousethief lies under the weather,
Our mousethief is making a fuss,
Our mousethief's been sewn back together,
Please send back our mousethief to us.

O send back, o send back,
O send back our mousethief to us, to us,
Send him back in a six-horse-drawn chariot,
Or send him back in an old Greyhound bus.

His innards are back where they should be
With his stomach wrapped back round his guts,
He takes soup down his oesophagal cavity,
But he still can't eat pretzels or nuts.

Last night as he lay on his pillow,
Our mousethief was roaring with pain;
Give his sight back to the old fellow,
Let his fingers have feeling again.

Send him back, send him back to the Mudcat,
Send him back to set challenges perverse;
With a catalogue of scatological items that
Will corrupt and deprave us or worse!

Matthew

Your body has taken a battering, and I'm not surprised it's gone a bit out of sync!
Be gentle with yourself, and take all the dietary advice seriously!

Good thoughts coming from Maine Mousethief.

Oxycodone is horrible stuff - so many side effects. Here's hoping that the pain goes away fast so that you can get off of the painkillers.

Update: Tingling in paws is entirely gone, and vision appears to be back to normal! Had a few sharp, unexpected pains in a place unrelated to the surgery today but they went away and are not coming back -- this was in spite of pain meds. Dial-a-nurse says not to fret unless it comes back, and that works for me.

I'm supposed to take the pain meds every 4 hours, and if I let it go 4.5 (almost to the minute) I know it.

Thanks everybody for your good wishes and jokes and stuff.

Oh, and I can now play the guitar again! Not any better than before, alas, but that (and wiping my ass) were two things I was afraid I'd never be able to do again!

While recuperating, Mousethief, you may find your appetite for cheese is getting back to normal, and you're getting those strong cravings...

If so, RESIST the temptation to take a piece of cheese that is sitting temptingly in a sort of peculiar device that looks kind of like a wound-up metal frame of some kind that is mounted on a wooden base. DON'T GO NEAR IT!!!

Trust me on this, okay? ;-) No matter how good it smells, DON'T touch the cheese!
