Here at least, we are watching Brazil's floods as well as Australia's. Remember we have many known Mucat friends in Austral;ia. That makes for more posts; not necessarily less concern.

These apalling natural disasters keep on happening, don't they? Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis and forest fires. Of course they've always happened - but now there are thousands/millions of people in the path of each one. And, of course, it often turns out that many of those people have 'amplified' the effects of the disasters by drastically modifying and degrading the local environment. For example the 'Boxing Day' tsunami in the Indian Ocean was far more destructive than it ought to have been because many of the coastal mangrove forests had been destroyed (a 2 or 3 mile strip of mangrove blunts the effect of a tsunami by acting as a buffer). Similarly it said on the BBC news tonight that thousands of people had moved into the area of Brazil affected by the floods and landslides, cut down forests on steep hillsides and built flimsy houses in their place - a landslide disaster waiting to happen!

As long as we have contempt for Nature, Nature will go on killing us!

Whats sad is that Bonzo feels the need to collectively insult people who he no knowledge of.

If he took more than two seconds to think, he would realize that there anr numerous Australian catters.

Hence - conversations about the Aussie floods.

Guess how many Brazilian catters there are?

None.

Hence, not many comments.


But here's the crux.


When Bonzo sees a terrible tragedy on the news, his concern is neither to discuss it or to persuade people to assist.

Instead, his priority is the opportunity it gives him to insult and deliberately attempt to provoke people.


If he cared about Brazil, he would make a donation to a relevant charity and encourage others to do the same.


But he doesn't.


He just wants to get his kicks from cynical abuse of a tragedy to wind people up.

Now THAT is sad.

What a meaningless life you must lead Bonzo.

And 'obviously' because you didn't mention it you consider Brazil more important than Sri Lanka! You could go on for ever doing that!

Which is what I as meaning to point out about the use of the word 'obviously' in your initial post :-) Just because folk don't write on a forum about floods in Brazil or Sri Lanka doesn't mean that people don't consider them. Certainly as far as the UK goes a high proportion of people will know of someone out there (be it friend or family) plus the countries themselves are closely connected. It is natural that floods in Australia are high in folk's minds. Though to be fair to the media just about every flood story has incorporated the Brazilian and Sri Lankan stories too.

I had hoped that this thread would allow a discussion of the environmental implications of these recent floods. But all we seem to have got so far is a silly squabble about who has the holiest and most pious attitude towards the world's poor!

Teresopolis, just a short drive north of Rio de Janeiro, is, or was once, a beautiful resort area. I spent a number of weekends there when I lived in Rio. It saddens me to think of how its surrounding steep mountainsides may have collapsed onto what was there.

Brazil mourns hundreds of flood victims

My brother-in-law is working in Brazil, & he & my sister live in the coastal area of Rio, about 100km from the disaster. I'll ask her about the local reporting.

500 dead is tragic Bonzo, thanks for letting us know. I wonder why floods are happening so much at present - are they always happening and we just don't notice because it's not near us? or are these floods around the world a result of global warming?

The British media's (or at least the BBC) take on it seems to be that the Australian to Sri Lankan floods are down to an occurance of the Pacific weather pattern known as La Nina and that the Brazilian rains are seperate heavy rains.

Last I heard from Escamillo, he and his wife had fallen in love with Brazil's beaches as a vacation away from Argentina. They esp. loved the people there. Haven't heard from him or seen him around the Mudcat in a while.

Of course we all care about any folks who are going through such tragedy, but our friends are going to be more prevalent regardless.
