Subject: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: bradfordian Date: 26 Jan 11 - 07:39 AM Just noticed the first Snowdrops of the season starting to show their snowy heads. I find this very uplifting. Triggers a chain of events Snowdrops- Crocuses- Daffodils- Bluebells. "When the green man walks the forest, then you know spring has begun" Not quite Spring just yet, but it's on the way! bradfordian |

Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: maeve Date: 26 Jan 11 - 09:32 AM I dug as many of our snowdrops as I could find before the foundation was filled in. My idea of a perfect gift would be 1,000 snowdrop clumps to plant in our woodland. |

Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: nutty Date: 26 Jan 11 - 01:33 PM Saw snowdrops today when I was walking the dogs in the woods. Quite early for the North-East coast but they do say that the Spring bulbs thrive under heavy snow. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: gnu Date: 26 Jan 11 - 02:09 PM "If the snow is falling, then I reckon you have more snow drops than I have" We don't have as many here in coastal New Brunswick as the Maineacs have and we are still nearly arse deep in the wretched things... with billions more on the way tonight. |

Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: mouldy Date: 27 Jan 11 - 03:42 AM I planted some into a pot for my move to Northumberland, and a couple have flowers, although not fully open. The crocuses in the front (west facing) bed are an inch or so up, but there's not a lot of evidence of the snowdrops I put in there, as it was relatively late in the planting season (mid November). However, I have been told that the bed is usually full of bulbs, so I await events! I saw a couple of daisies trying to flower in the roadside verge the other day, and the local farm shop has a lonely little alpine cowslip in flower, in its flowerbed. Andrea |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: Sooz Date: 27 Jan 11 - 04:00 AM We have one so far here in our garden in Lincolnshire. The aconites are just starting to show and they will look lovely together in a week or so. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: GUEST,Jon Date: 27 Jan 11 - 06:34 AM Haven't noticed the aconites starting here yet but I think they are all in the "wood garden" and the snowdrops are not in flower there yet either - seems to be a bit behind the other patch. Another thing in flower here btw is winter jasmine. |

Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: bradfordian Date: 14 Mar 11 - 07:51 PM Just for the record..... Well, that's just about it for my snowdrops, been a lovely 7 weeks. A few daffodils to come, but then no other flowers until next crop of snowdrops. Still, they've done a good job for me, in my "pursuit of happiness" easing me into spring (if i can hang on another week!). For many years, I never realised just how many snowdrops there has been around. My ability to observe is "clearly" blinkered. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 15 Mar 11 - 12:07 PM We are festooned with daffodils everywhere now, buying them the supermarket has lost it's appeal. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: Bettynh Date: 24 Mar 11 - 01:17 PM I'm pleased to report snowdrops and early crocus are blooming here in southern NH. The best group, really approaching a "carpet" is in the area I dug out last September and gave away a bag of bulbs to a young gardener who responded to my Craigslist ad. Perhaps the extra room was good for them. They started blooming in snow a few days ago, and it's snowing now. I'm hoping for a long slow spring, good for crocus, snowdrops, and maple syrup, but I doubt we'll see them for 7 weeks. In some years, they only bloom for a couple days before real warmth sets in. Maybe they hold out for pollinators? No bees out today - there's snow in the air. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 24 Mar 11 - 01:33 PM Light snow again today, dark and drear, ground frozen solid and will continue so through much of April. Some nice flowers at the florists. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2012) From: bradfordian Date: 09 Jan 12 - 05:13 AM Just for comparison, my first snowdrop appeared on 2nd Jan thanks to the milder weather and now I have many brave enough to show their snowy petals a good 3 weeks earlier than 2011. No doubt further south than Nottingham, they will have been around 2 or 3 weeks already. bradfordian |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: maeve Date: 09 Jan 12 - 06:54 AM Snowdrops are blooming here too; potted bulbs on the windowsill! We'll set them all out in the spring. |

Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 09 Jan 12 - 01:29 PM Just been to Potter Heigham (Norfolk Broads) and saw daffodils in bloom. Also blackthorn blossom and catkins. I hope a ghastly freeze doesn't come along and kill all these early flowers! |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: Cats Date: 09 Jan 12 - 01:47 PM I had snowdrops and crocus out for Christmas in Cornwall and I also have frogspawn in the pond. |
Subject: RE: BS: First Snowdrops (2011) From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 09 Jan 12 - 01:57 PM I've heard that, if frogspawn is killed by frost, the frogs can lay some more later, Cats. I hope this is true, as it's very early isn't it? |
