Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: mandomad Date: 23 Mar 11 - 07:43 AM Friendship is a very good venue. Cheap beer, good atmosphere, and we've all been made welcome. Are you stopping in the main bar, or the great concert room upstairs? Just hope we wouldn't upset the regular Thursday night folk. There's even a beer garden and great views of Whitby from all the windows mandomad |

Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Arthur_itus Date: 23 Mar 11 - 05:29 AM Ok I will lay off Raggy. The Friendship where Mick runs his club, sounds like a good idea. As you say, plenty of room and decently priced booze. Can't go wrong, if all of the regulars from FILO go there as well. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Raggytash Date: 23 Mar 11 - 05:18 AM She may well Arthur, but possible not if we slag her off on here and she reads it, we may move to a Thursday night and frequent Mr Heywoods folk club at the Friendship, good room, decent beer at reasonable prices, watch this space. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Arthur_itus Date: 22 Mar 11 - 05:16 PM What a bloody shame. Me think landlady want heavy drinkers, who then spill out of the pub, thump f**k out of each other smash windows and damage property. Stupid landlady. When I went to FILo, I met many very nice people, who had a fair amount to drink, but then went home peacefully. Silly arsehole will probably come creeping back when she realises the error of her ways. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 22 Mar 11 - 04:14 PM How very true Sir Roger |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 22 Mar 11 - 11:02 AM The additional problem is that most of these pubs that end up in this situation are not owned by breweries but by pubcos that have no link to beer production nor in promoting it. These pubcos are simply property owning conglomerates that mainly make their money buying and selling properties and collecting rents. (Oh, and a 40% markup on the beers that are sold) That means that the community side of pubs (including music) is very low in the priority list. Roger |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Betsy Date: 22 Mar 11 - 09:29 AM Hiya Tyke, I think you might have got your wires crossed - Managers are believed by the Breweries to be cheaper ( Not Tenants) though I have no knowledge of the FILO present arrangements. My understanding in the average English pub is that a Manager gets a wage / salary - so he/she is (relatively) unaffected by sales therefore there is no incentive to work harder or institute ideas to get more punters through the door. A Tenant purchases a lease, and also pays a rent generally to the brewery who owns the pub. The Tenant is obliged to buy beer etc from the brewery at prices set by the Brewery. Put VERY simply , you're more likely to get a stoppy-back or a late drink from a Tenant because the Tenant has to fill the Till to pay the rent , so , if the Tenant can get punters through the door by having a folk evening or whatever other type – then why not ? A Tenant try other revenue raising activites i.e. probviding meals / food / putting on entertainment etc. A Manager just finds THAT situation more work, so they are not inclined to put themselves to the trouble. I must stress again I don't have any knowledge of the present set up at FILO , but it is a shame for all like minded Folkies and other visitors to Whitby – especially with a great fish and chip shop across the road . |

Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Tyke Date: 18 Mar 11 - 12:59 PM Aledgidly:- Same old same Old! Brewery can't afford a manager cheaper with a tenant? They will charge the New Tenant according to how much Beer the Pub sells. So why sell lot's of beer and work hard until you are the New Tennant and on a low rent for Two Years! Next ploy is for the Brewery to pay for live music to make the Manager sell more Beer! Still Welcoming the Goths! Well that week is still a while away and the Blood Suckers at the Brewery will want to stick together. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 18 Mar 11 - 09:58 AM Apparently Goths are welcome though - they have banner running across the website to that effect. R |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: mandomad Date: 18 Mar 11 - 06:28 AM Jist looked at the FILO website, All mentions of Folk music, and the two photos of Folk sessions are wiped off their site. We ain't even welcome any more it seems. mandomad |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Ann N Date: 16 Mar 11 - 04:26 AM A friend went past the FILO last night and only saw 4 people in the pub. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Les from Hull Date: 16 Mar 11 - 03:40 AM I'm amazed! Turning away drinking people on a Tuesday night! |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Leadfingers Date: 15 Mar 11 - 06:27 PM It was ever thus ! I (and sometimes a mate) were fired from the same pub three times ! Each time it was sold , and one time time it took three weeks for the new gaffer to ask us back ! And that was thirty years ago ! Good luck getting the session back ! |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: RichardPonytail Date: 15 Mar 11 - 05:54 PM Strange tack the licenced trade is taking nowadays. I remember when landlords actively supported and encouraged any group of people they could get. Darts, pool, fives and threes, cribbage, music - you name it. We used to play in the lounge while they were playing darts etc in the back bar. Nobody ever shouted "game on" at us! On a brighter note, I know a pub where they took out the pool table and dart board to get "a different type of customer" to come in. Nobody did. The games (and the locals) were back within three months. Best of luck with the search, Richard |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Ann N Date: 15 Mar 11 - 04:25 PM Having only got back into playing regularly in the past year thanks to the friendly FILO folk and wanting to keep on playing I'm going to go to the Thursday Folk down the Friendship, went last week and enjoyed it so it's marked on the calender for this week too. |

Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Raggytash Date: 15 Mar 11 - 10:18 AM Just spoken to Stuart, he was going to leave it a week or two to let the dust settle, however events changed things and he went in to see the new incumbent. She told him she did not want the Tuesday session as it was not financially rewarding (not her exact words but the gist) However she did want the monthly Saturday session to continue, you can guess Stuarts response, needless to say he politely declined. So now we shall have to see what other potential venues are available,I would think that after a brief "honeymoon" period Tuesday nights will be very quiet in the FILO and she may have some time on her hands to reconsider her initial reaction. Unfortunately this is our loss as well as hers, the weekly sessions at the FILO could very very entertaining with a wide variety of styles and material. |
Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: mandomad Date: 15 Mar 11 - 09:18 AM The new Landlady/manager must be mad, surely if she looks at the weekly takings, sees the rise during Folky nights, she can't afford ignore the difference. FILO is so quiet mid week/ out of season. Even at weekends, the locals would rather go to the pubs down in the town for a bit of life, and to catch up on Whitby's gossip. Still, that's the new landlady's perogative...she doesn't have to like us noisy, lively, friendly, beer drinking Folkies... mandomad |

Subject: RE: FILO Whitby (First Inn Last Out ) From: Raggytash Date: 01 Mar 11 - 03:26 PM I can only secong these sentiments, Ann and Paul have been so supportive of the folk nights we have had at the FILO, they have also been supportive of the Runswick Rescue Boat and our efforts to raise funds for it. Hopefully many of the people who come for the fund raiser on Friday will stay over to give them a resounding send off. Both Christine and myself will miss the sessions in the FILO, we both think they have been the best in the town. |
