Subject: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 19 Feb 11 - 09:38 AM After all the Ashes hype, haven't heard much about the Cricket World Cup, starting today. However, I'm much more interested in this event, which I feel is far more important in the wide-world-of-sports, partly due to the following reasoning - unlike test-cricket, a batsman's air-swing IS punished with a Dot-Ball. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 22 Feb 11 - 12:13 PM Well I almost had to take a ribbing from my Dutch wife. This match was more like "We are too good for Holland. We don't need to concentrate or try" Very poor from England, especially in the fielding. Hopefully they will be up to scratch on Sunday, 27 February 2011 ICC World Cup India v England, Bangalore, 09:00 They are going to have to be at top notch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: ced2 Date: 22 Feb 11 - 03:09 PM Indeed the quality of the cricket in the early rounds, namely walk-overs (against minnows?). I was listening to the commentary on the England v Netherlands match today. England just scraped a win after some poor bowling and fielding on their own part. This was followed up, if the commentators are to be believed, by some poor batting by one or two English players. Indeed, England, the quality of the cricket in the early rounds! Still it's better than getting beaten by the Netherlands (as has happened previously). Expect Mr Uppet to have a word or three about such a lamentable performance. |

I watched the last World Cup that was held in Jamaica which I was quite enjoying apart from the bit of drama that unfolded following a death (Pakistan manager? not sure). Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 07:19 AM Bell was lucky. However he was so far down the track, that was his saving grace. It's very unusual to give somebody out LBW so far down the track, as in fairness and as an umpire, you cannot be sure where the ball will finish up. Also whilst we can refer to modern day technology, that is not always correct. So if there is the slightest doubt, then NOT OUT. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 28 Feb 11 - 08:54 AM But joking aprart, Rog, do you agree that there must be some pretty handy Welsh cricketers not at this World Cup - who would be, of course, if Welsh cricket went the independent way of rugby, football, etc..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 10:31 AM WV if you want Wales to have it's own team, I would vote immediately. You all want to be independant. Just get on with it. I am English and proud of it. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 10:34 AM Thanks for the ruling Jon. Even without that, it would be hard for an umpire to predict clearly where the ball will finish up, when a batsman is so far out of his crease. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 02:57 PM I actually cricket at the county ground at Swansea. The one that Gary Sobers scored 6 sixes. It wasn't that difficult to do. I remember fielding at short point (my specialty fielding position), which was on the boundary. Anythink over my outstreched hands was a six. Come to think of it anything past my ankles was a six as well. Horrible place to bat, if you got a duck as you had a lot of steps to walk down to the pitch and the walk back was like climbing Snowden. I like the Welsh, but they want their own independance. I say give it them and lets stop giving them huge grants that could be used in England, my own country. |

Having got a decent score, England then squandered their chances with poor fielding and bowling (not for the first time in this competition). Makes a mockery of Englands Ashes win. It happens sometimes though, when number 11 doesn't know that he's supposed to be a rubbish batsman.
