Subject: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 19 Feb 11 - 09:38 AM After all the Ashes hype, haven't heard much about the Cricket World Cup, starting today. However, I'm much more interested in this event, which I feel is far more important in the wide-world-of-sports, partly due to the following reasoning - unlike test-cricket, a batsman's air-swing IS punished with a Dot-Ball. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Hrothgar Date: 19 Feb 11 - 10:09 PM Australia will probably struggle, having picked a bunch of (highly emotional and temperamental) fast bowlers when Blind Freddie could tell them that the sub-continent will have spin-friendly wickets all over the place. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Van Date: 20 Feb 11 - 05:07 AM Cricket World Cup - highlights at midnight. Football world cup all schedules destroyed and hours of hype and TV boredom! |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 20 Feb 11 - 01:12 PM The problem with the early rounds, is the quality of the cricket, namely walkovers. Let us get on with the last 8. That's what it is all about. England to win! |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Jon Date: 20 Feb 11 - 02:29 PM ... and Kenya got slaughtered. New Zealand 72-0 (8 overs) beat Kenya 69 (23.5 overs) by 10 wickets -- I think my money would be on India to win. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 20 Feb 11 - 03:15 PM Yes they did look good Jon, but it's early days. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 20 Feb 11 - 04:42 PM And Sri Lanka beat Canada, today, by 210 runs...but if Wales became an independent cricket (as well as rugby, football, etc.) nation..? |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Max Johnson Date: 21 Feb 11 - 07:33 AM Watching NZ and Sri Lanka stroll over two courageous, but totally outclassed sides is enjoyable for an hour but as others have said, completely meaningless. Let's wait until they meet India and Pakistan and, perhaps, England. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 21 Feb 11 - 05:21 PM Today, Australia beat Zimbabwe by 91 runs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 22 Feb 11 - 12:13 PM Well I almost had to take a ribbing from my Dutch wife. This match was more like "We are too good for Holland. We don't need to concentrate or try" Very poor from England, especially in the fielding. Hopefully they will be up to scratch on Sunday, 27 February 2011 ICC World Cup India v England, Bangalore, 09:00 They are going to have to be at top notch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: ced2 Date: 22 Feb 11 - 03:09 PM Indeed the quality of the cricket in the early rounds, namely walk-overs (against minnows?). I was listening to the commentary on the England v Netherlands match today. England just scraped a win after some poor bowling and fielding on their own part. This was followed up, if the commentators are to be believed, by some poor batting by one or two English players. Indeed, England, the quality of the cricket in the early rounds! Still it's better than getting beaten by the Netherlands (as has happened previously). Expect Mr Uppet to have a word or three about such a lamentable performance. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: jonah77 Date: 22 Feb 11 - 04:17 PM quite fond of limited overs but i still think test cricket is real cricket |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Patsy Date: 23 Feb 11 - 09:15 AM Apologies for sounding dumb but I didn't think the Netherlands were into cricket. I watched the last World Cup that was held in Jamaica which I was quite enjoying apart from the bit of drama that unfolded following a death (Pakistan manager? not sure). Unfortunately I haven't followed the game of cricket for long so I know less about it than the offside rule in football! But I like the look of the game. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,giovanni Date: 23 Feb 11 - 09:24 AM England v Holland When all's said and done, they are just a pretty clueless bunch of part-timers, but didn't you think they did well to beat Holland? g |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Max Johnson Date: 23 Feb 11 - 01:00 PM Thoughts over the past couple of days... England's performance was literally shocking. I meant to see how the odds have shifted today, but haven't had time yet. Not sure that I'm considering a punt now. I really liked the look of Kenya's wicket keeper t'other day - I don't think that's going to save them though! Haven't seen the result yet - I want to watch the highlights tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 23 Feb 11 - 05:00 PM If it's before the 11.20pm hightlights, Max may care to look away!... Pakistan beat Kenya by 205 runs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Max Johnson Date: 24 Feb 11 - 12:24 PM Kenya's fielding was bollocks, their wicket keeper included. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 24 Feb 11 - 01:19 PM Best game to date. South Africa 223-3 (42.5 overs) bt West Indies 222 (47.3 overs) by seven wickets I didn't see that coming. Unbeleivable how West Indies collapsed |

Standout performances: Sachin Tendulkar 120 Andrew Strauss 158 Tim Bresnan 5for48 in 10 overs Strauss' innings was the highest by any England player in a world cup match and won him 'man of the match' What a game!!!! Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 27 Feb 11 - 01:54 PM Time we dropped the Wales :-) What a superb match. Why oh why did England as we are called take the power play when we were under no pressure. I need destressing. Thoroughly enjoying. Well done England :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Congratulations to both teams for a very entertaining match and a tie is the fairest result. |

Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Feb 11 - 06:48 AM I'd have liked to have seen India v England!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 07:19 AM Bell was lucky. However he was so far down the track, that was his saving grace. It's very unusual to give somebody out LBW so far down the track, as in fairness and as an umpire, you cannot be sure where the ball will finish up. Also whilst we can refer to modern day technology, that is not always correct. So if there is the slightest doubt, then NOT OUT. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Feb 11 - 07:34 AM From http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/27/cricket-world-india-bell-idUSLDE71Q0JW20110227 "The rule book says that if the batsman is struck more than 2.5 metres down the pitch, he will be ruled not out regardless of the projected trajectory of the ball. It also states that if the third umpire is not convinced with the replays, he should refer back to the field umpire who will make the final call." |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 28 Feb 11 - 08:54 AM But joking aprart, Rog, do you agree that there must be some pretty handy Welsh cricketers not at this World Cup - who would be, of course, if Welsh cricket went the independent way of rugby, football, etc..? |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 10:31 AM WV if you want Wales to have it's own team, I would vote immediately. You all want to be independant. Just get on with it. I am English and proud of it. :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 10:34 AM Thanks for the ruling Jon. Even without that, it would be hard for an umpire to predict clearly where the ball will finish up, when a batsman is so far out of his crease. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: GUEST,Jon Date: 28 Feb 11 - 10:56 AM Agreed Arthur. I'd never that I can remember seen it written as a rule before. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: WalkaboutsVerse Date: 28 Feb 11 - 12:05 PM And agreed Arthur, also!...but, just to clarify, I too am an Englishman, who has enjoyed visiting Wales, and is aware that they produce some good cricketers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Rog Peek Date: 28 Feb 11 - 12:25 PM I'm sure there are WV, and if I were Welsh, I would most certainly want my country represented at the world cup. Rog |
Subject: RE: BS: Re. Cricket World Cup From: Arthur_itus Date: 28 Feb 11 - 02:57 PM I actually cricket at the county ground at Swansea. The one that Gary Sobers scored 6 sixes. It wasn't that difficult to do. I remember fielding at short point (my specialty fielding position), which was on the boundary. Anythink over my outstreched hands was a six. Come to think of it anything past my ankles was a six as well. Horrible place to bat, if you got a duck as you had a lot of steps to walk down to the pitch and the walk back was like climbing Snowden. I like the Welsh, but they want their own independance. I say give it them and lets stop giving them huge grants that could be used in England, my own country. |
