MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - He didn't seek the spotlight, but when Frank Buckles outlived every other American who'd served in World War I, he became what his biographer called "the humble patriot" and final torchbearer for the memory of that fading conflict. Buckles enlisted in World War I at 16 after lying about his age. He died Sunday on his farm in Charles Town, nearly a month after his 110th birthday. He had devoted the last years of his life to campaigning for greater recognition for his former comrades, prodding politicians to support a national memorial in Washington and working with friend and family spokesman David DeJonge on a biography.

He was also a WW2 Vet and spent 3 years as a Japanese POW. Truly a hell on earth!

Lest We Forget!

Memories of that war no longer exist in a living mind. I wonder what it would be like to be the last voice of millions.

One of those little moments of history which will go virtually unnoticed. May he rest in peace - he certainly did enough.

Typically, his website is so understated and doesn't dwell on the awfulness of what he must have endured in both world wars....

It looks like there are only 2 left from the allies side. One man and one woman, both 110 years old!
