Queen Victoria's birthday was 24th May,and in 1902 it was designated "Empire Day". Apparently Victoria Day is still celebrated in Canada on the Monday before the 24th.

I remember in the 1950s in England we used to have a half-holiday from school on that day. In the morning we had to sing a song

We have come to school this morning
On the twenty-fourth of May
[Can't remember this line]
Because it's Empire Day

Bring back Wakes Week is what I say. All the mills in the town closed at the same time and off we went - mainly to Blackpool. It wasn't unusual for the next-door neighbours to be in the boarding house next door to your own!

If it was sunny, we went on the beach, played in the sea, got covered in sand and rode the donkeys. It wet, up to the Tower to see Reg Dixon rise up through the floor on his Mighty Wurlitzer. Highlight of the week was the Tower Circus on the Saturday night.

By... them were't days!

I would rather a personal choice of whether to take a Bank Holiday or not especially if it has to be taken out of a yearly entitlement of holidays earned. I resent being forced to take holiday that I don't want.

I for one have a bottle of Babycham on ice ready for Maggie's great day.
As a republican, should I refuse a day off on 29 April?

Seeing 29 April is a Friday, I'll probably go to Tesc while the wedding is on.

First day of Girvan Folk Festival so maybe we'll have a right royal (or even anti-royal!) session! "Confound their fiddlesticks"!

"I am constantly astonished, on this forum & in general, by what peculiarly nasty people so many on the left are ~~ notionally full of love for their fellow-man; but in fact overwhelmingly full of hate & spite towards anyone who won't accept their overwhelmingly jejune & discredited assumptions."

... but it's ok for members of the 'Right' to behave this way, apparently ... because they are not full of love for their fellow man, just fiscal greed ... ?

I'm not astonished - I suppose, at least, that attitude is not inconsistent ... :-)

Really I don't care what they do with it. It's great for people with young families who need time together but if you haven't got young children it isn't that beneficial. The other bugbear is the Sunday service buses and Sunday shop opening times on Bank Holidays. This and the last Christmas for example Bank Holidays fell on the Christmas weekend which was so confusing as far as bus travel or shop opening times were concerned because what normally would have been Boxing Day was the day after on the Monday followed by a Bank Holiday Tuesday and as my Christmas was spent out in the sticks had to attempt to get a bus back which was very few and far between that day. I was glad that it was back to being a 'normal' day by Wednesday and started to enjoy the Christmas break a bit more.

@tattie bogle

Thanks for putting that song up, it's just what I've been looking for to add to my repertoire. Particularly like the verse about the bosses making millions and squeezing the workers' pay - nothing ever changes unless we make it change and stop giving in once we've been offered concessions.

Only the ones in parliament.

Perhaps thats where our dragons have gone.

I suppose I could look this up, but it's more interesting to ask here.

I though St George's day used to be a holiday? I remember (in Yorkshire) St George's Day fetes and maypole dancing when I was very young.

Also, interestingly, there was always a local holiday declared here at harvest time. This was a fishing village, so presumably they all went off for a couple of day's casual pay. They declared the holiday because everyone would have gone anyway and it saved the administrative hassle of people being absent from work snd school.
