My youngest brother died about 9 a.m. today, March 5, 2011. An Air Force linguist during the Vietnam War, he spoke fluent Spanish and Vietnamese as well as some Russian, Hebrew, and Japanese. He held a BFA in Theater and acted in over 300 plays ranging from "Antigone" to "The Crucible" to "Hamlet" to what he considered his greatest role, "Death of a Salesman. He is survived by his wife, two sons, two brothers, one sister, at least seven nieces and nephews, and two grand-nephews. In addition to acting his hobbies included black powder shooting, hunting, and, especially, fishing. For the last dozen years he worked as a substitute teacher. He will be missed by all who knew him -- funeral arrangements are pending.

Well, immediately after graduating from college he traveled with a tent show and learned how to put up a "big top" in a high wind. The show, a "Toby" show, is recorded in the Smithsonian.

I'm sorry to hear of this, Rapparee. It sounds like your brother Ted was a man who lived a great life full of accomplishment and creativity. No one expects to outlive a younger sibling...or a child, but there are no guarantees about either. May you find comfort in friends and family to get you through this time.

There will be more: from the "old Mexican ladies" he was teaching English (and they were teaching him to make tortillas) to the Mongolian chap he just started teaching English: Ted had spoken Russian to any extent for 40 years and the Mongolian for 25. You can imagine how THAT was going!
