hallo all , things here in Iceland are going from bad to worse ...
the gas price is going sky high and now taxes of gas has raised
so its not possible for me to work where I work I have to drive 105 km
everyday and after this morning new s about gas getting higher
because of Libia I can´t do this . So are there more people in same
situation ? or is it just me .

what to do for is trying to get a job in or near my home town
or move away from Iceland to another country .

How do the prices compare with other countries in Europe, Skarpi? Over in the UK at the moment - in my area (souht-east) - a litre is around £1.36 GBS. And probably rising. Is that better or worse than you?

I used to do a round trip of around 120 km every day before I retired - glad I'm not doing it now!

Sorry to hear it Skarpy, it's just as bad here in England but only because we have a government who allows engergy Co's to blatantly profiteer by upping their prices several times a year and especially just as winter sets in

Oil is, believe it or not, subsidized here in the US -- which means the oil companies have even higher profits and we, the taxpayers and gas consumers (to get to work -- no chance of public transport where I live) pay twice.

Gas prices are unbelievably low in the US compared to almost everywhere else. We are crying because it is now over $3 US per US gallon. The conversion is a bit complicated, but that works out to something like £0.5 per liter. It isn't exactly subsidized, but it is almost untaxed. This chart shows gas/petrol prices from about 6 months ago - the base price doesn't change much from one country to another, but the tax rates (and thus the overall cost) vary dramatically.

Hmmm... I see that basic oil prices are comparable, the taxes are the big difference. *IF* we were taxed at comparable rates, it would be serious because of the very large distances many must drive.
Folks in 'most' European countries can barely comprehend driving from New York to San Francisco...or Seattle to Miami. Even local trips to & from work can be 1-3 hours. I have no idea what would be 'fair', but a trip to West Virgina that we plan to make next week is a 5-5½ hours, and will add many $$$$$ to the fuel cost.
   I also know that many in Europe get by with smaller cars because of the fuel costs. We in the US do buy much too large cars than we 'really' need.

I have few options :

1 . stay on benefits
2. move away to another country
3,try to get a job in small town somewhere I do not have use a car .


I am thinking of what to do .

but the attack on libia is not helping any country in the world .

things in Jemen , Syria , Bahrain and in other country´s in the east
are not good .

so hoping the best for us , along praying for those who have nothing .

Skarpi, unfortunately I have no advice for you. Doubtless you did consider moving to your place of work, rather than moving to another country.

Generally speaking, those of us who complain about high taxation of fuel are starting at the wrong end. We should demand of our politicians (and employers) to foster, in order of priority,

1. work in home offices or within bicyclable distance of one's home (having video conferences whenever necessary),


2. work within reach of public transport, no more than half an hour's distance,


3. moving to the place of work,


4. living at the place of work during the week, going home on weekends,

all at affordable prices. Energy will inevitably become more expensive, even without wars and other disasters. Also, driving to work is a dangerous work in itself - the Car Cult is designed to camouflage that fact.

Some jobs require physical work, because a machine doing it adequately has not yet been invented, or would be more expensive. (Well, your native fishing industry owns trawlers that produce deepfrozen fish fingers on the ocean completely automatically. Modern air pilots have no other function than to vouch with their lives for the safety of the airplane.)

For some other professions, such as concert musician, priest, or prostitute, physical presence is the main point. All other work, particularly administration, but also supervising, teaching, jurisprudence, selling/buying, etc., can principally be done remotely via internet. This applies even to medical advice to a surprising extent, as demonstrated by isolated farmers in outback Australia. Often a physical action, such as an injection, can be performed by a person less qualified than the one ordering and supervising it from elsewhere. So I am by no means talking about classical computer jobs only.

Of course, human interaction is necessary for almost all work to be successful. Our telephones being immensely helpful, video conferences and video supervision have much greater potentials. To be sure, they will never be quite the same as physical presence, both having their specific advantages and trade-offs.

On the whole, a large part of today's traffic is wasteful even by present technological and economic circumstances, let alone environmental aspects. Most of our managers, shareholders, politicians, and voters are not sufficiently aware of these facts, and/or worship cars and airplanes as status symbols. May this change as quickly as possible.

If there were less demand for energy, prices would not rise that much for what is still needed.

Not quite the same thing I know but living on the Isle of Wight with 2 school leavers in the end I had to go back to the mainland to get more options and choice of work. The work is mostly seasonal, care work or jobshare if you are lucky, majority DHS. Bus travel was and probably still is extortionate and I would hate to think about how much petrol and oil on the island costs now, then there is the snag of the ferry prices getting to and from each time. Staying there would not have been any good to us at that time as much as we loved it so back we came. Of course I could have taken the hydrofoil or ferry to Southampton but that would have cost a fortune. It is possible that I might go back live in the way off future but as it is now, no.

And many garages put the fuel up by 1p yesterday morning then down again after the budget so net result no change!
