does anyone know where I could find an online guide to helping with pronunciation of Irish? One semester of Irish language just doesn't quite do it when it comes to some songs.

thanks Eleanor

Dear Eleanor,

What dialect did you learn? That would help in directing you to the appropriate site. There are several sites on the 'Net, but most of them are either Munster or Connaught sites and will instruct you in those dialects. Good for you for taking a class! Where did you take your instruction?

I think the dialect is kinda hard to know when a person is just learning. Hi Aine. But reckon the best way to learn is from a native speaker as I did.

Hi Queene, Here's a site I found that has a pronounciation key for Irish. I have no idea what dialect it is! I found Irish very difficult to learn, my kingdom for a site that has the songs written out phonetically!!!! Hang-in there and practice practice practice! Cheers, Nan http://www.monmouth.com/~daltai/key.htm

PS Any Irish speakers out there willing to help us out with some songs and pronounciation???

One problem that you would have with phonetic spellings is that it is very difficult to phonetically spell some of the sounds that really don't have an equivalent in Bearla (English). (Sorry for the lack of fada's but I can't get them to type in threads). One of my favorite songs to sing is "Molly Na gCuach Ni/ Chuillea/in". I had a request to write it out phonetically, but found it very difficult to get some of the words right for folks.

Mick

I recommend "Interactive Irish on the Internet", where you can listen to the Irish pronunciation with RealAudio.
