I was in north County Mayo this summer and heard an old song along the lines of "Throw Another Turf on the Fire, Molly" about an old man and woman looking back over the years. This was about 5:00 am in a pub with only about three people including myself. Does this ring any bells? If nothing comes up I'll try to track it down by mail. Thanks, all.

It's probably a variant of 'Put Another Log on the Fire' which is in the Digitrad links.

My apologies, Pablo, that silly suggestion just sprang to mind.

Pablo

I suspect I've heard the song under similar circumstances! My recollection of the chorus is something like: "Put more turf on the fire Mary-Anne...". Strong waltz-tune. I doubt that I have a set of words in my own collection - but will have a look.

Regards

PUT MORE TURF ON THE FIRE

My name it is Patsy Moloney
From the hill tops near Mullinahone
I'm in love with a sweet little colleen
I hope soon to make her my own
She lives with her father and mother
In a cottage quite close to the mill
And wherever in life I may wander
I'll think of that darling spot still

Chorus
Put more turf on the fire Mary Ann
For the weather is dreary and cold
Throw down an ould sod Mary Ann
We're both growing feeble and old
And the trouble in life we've been through
That have turned this world nearly upside down
But never changed my love for you, Mary Ann
But never changed my love for you

Oh, Mary, and do you remember
That night in the little boreen
When I whispered the fond loving words dear
Down by the purling stream
And I watched the thick smoke curling up
From your ould fellow's cabin close by
Ah, Mary, my dear, be of good cheer
And throw an ould sod on the fire

Now let us be pleased and contented
And hand down my good old duideen
And we'll drink to your love and mine, dear
In a good drop of Irish poteen
And we'll talk of good days in old Ireland
The days that we all do desire
Ah, Mary, my dear, be of good cheer
And throw an ould sod on the fire

Seamus Kavanagh

Line missing from chorus

We're both growing feeble and old
And we'll talk of old times, Mary Ann
And the trouble in life we've been through

Brakn, that's a nice song. Is it to a known air?

Hi there! That song Put More Turf on The fire was written in the 19th Century about my great grandfather Patsy Moroney although it has been recorded as Patsy Moloney.

The British Library Integrated Catalogue lists a copy of the sheet music of PUT MORE TURF ON THE FIRE "arr. by P. J. Ryan", dated 1949.
