Nigel,a good little booklet, now a collectors' item. The same booklet, titled Alle, Alle, Alie, or Dandy Shandy, have, I believe, the same 12 songs. A good one to pick up. Olive Lewin's books, mostly paperbacks, were never mass-produced or were limited in circulation, except for her book on Jamaican food. Worth looking for is her collection, Forty Folk Songs of Jamaica; I think I have located a copy.
Morwen and I will be posting Jamaican 'folk' songs; posted by title mostly. I think Joe Offer will be collecting them together in some way.

Recorded on Colmbia(sic) Record Album • CL 1007 "The Calypso Carnival" I have this album. In addition to the songs listed at 24 January 16, these three songs are on the record.
Honey Man Miss Emmalina Chicken Gumbo and Okra Water
This album apparently came out shortly after Belafonte's "Calypso". I've long felt this was a domestic, studio recording as you seem to indicate. Columbia issued a spate of the genre around this time, including one by the Norman Luboff Choir, which I have but seldom listen to.
Amongst my calypso era records which I still enjoy are:
Royale #1839 10" LP, Native Calypso Songs 1954/55. Label has no track names, nor performers listed. Discogsdotcom posits some heavy hitters, among them Gerald Clark Orch., Macbeth, and Lord Invader. This was probably a budget label, maybe about a dollar or two, new.
Westminster #WP 6038 12" LP, Songs From Jamaica - Edric Connor 1956. Good cover notes with glossary. More authentic sounding versions of several Belafonte renditions, with slightly different titles. I believe that Connor, like HB, was an actor as well as singer. I like a lot.
Tops Records #1568 12" LP Calypso Carnival in Hi-Fi - features Lord Burgess. The album contains at least eight Belafonte tracks. Tops was a budget label, often copying sound-alike singers and pretty much sound alke arrangements of hit record of the '50s.
Capitol Records #T842 12" LP Swinging Calypsos - Lord Flea and his Calypsonians 1957. Highly recommend as I think this my favorite LP of type.
Verve #MGV-2034 12" LP Calypso - The Fabulous McClevertys 1957. I bought this album on recommendation of a single song, Don't Blame it on Elvis, and stsyed for the whole album. As we used to say,"this is one bitchin' album.

Have about 15 other albums, plus, I think, most of the Belafonte RCAs. Truly I enjoy most of the non-Belafontes LPs more than his, but except for a few calypsos by some pop singers he popularized the genre, and I honor that. Also, I have about 20 CDs, with some tracks going back to the 1920s. My favorite of these are compilations of Sir Lancelot from the 40s and 50s. He also appeared in several films. He died in Anaheim CA in 2001, 98 years old!
Yup. Trinis call it "Manhattan Calypso." Lord Burgess (Irving Burgie,) the Pattersons and a few others were represented by Art D'Lugoff (who was planning/opening the "Village Gate" in New York at the same time.)
Bill Attaway was a TV-sports-pulp fiction writer. His agent-partner Lyle Engel was last of a NY family line of popular sheet music publishers but probably better known as the man behind John Jakes ("The Bastard".)
Norman Luboff was choral director-cowriter; Bill Attaway cowriter and Burgess principal writer on Belafonte's biggest RCA calypso albums. Throw in Alan Bergman and Marilyn Keith and you have the writers for Luboff's album ("Calypso Holiday," Columbia CL-1000, 1957.)
But Luboff did record his calypsos on Sunset Blvd so there is that. B)

The strangest aspect of "Manhattan Calypso" has to be Harry Belafonte's business agent Jay Richard Kennedy (born Samuel Richard Solomonick.) In addition to simultaneously managing HB's single biggest success and failure (album "Calypso" & stage musical "Sing, Man, Sing" respectively) Kennedy was at times an OSS-CPUSA-CIA-FBI operative; munitions manufacturer and successful Hollywood author-screenwriter [no joke.] His 'wife' (the former Janet Alterman) also an employee of the state was HB's therapist. It did not end well.
For a period after Kennedy hung around the fringes of the west coast's Black Panther Party until 1966 when he became Vice-President of Record and Music-Publishing at Sinatra Enterprises. In the 1970s, he followed his now ex-wife into psychotherapy and founded the Center for Human Problems Inc. in Tarzana, CA. It did not end well.

Phil, do any of these songbooks attempt to identify songwriters or give background information for the songs? Which of these are your favorites? Are there any that are field collections of traditional songs? I've heard that one of the most significant Caribbean folk songbooks is identified by Bookfinder as The Island Song Book Treasure Island Bahamas 1927, by John and Evelyn McCutcheon. The only copy for sale through Bookfinder.com is $162.34. Too rich for my taste.
Belafonte & Attaway give some notes but the back stories get pretty far fetched at times. Burgie discusses origins in his autobiography but only vaguely (Day-O!!!, Caribe, 2006.) The Pattersons claimed several songs outright we know are old West Indian standards (eg: Haiti's Choucoune.) The Whipper, Merrick & Mauge tunes are mostly modern originals.
Best archives are the Melville and Frances Herskovits collections at the Indiana U. Archives of Traditional Music and the Katherine Dunham collection at Southern Illinois U. (Note: Dunham was a Herskovitz grad student and Burgie, Attaway, Patterson, Whipper & Heyward all woked with Dunham as did Belafonte's second wife, the former Julie Robinson.)
My personal fav is "Le Carnival de St-Pierre (Martinique)" a 1930 volume of Victor Coridun songs compiled by R. Illemay (coming soon.) I like it precisely because of the excellent footnotes. It's pricey and hard to find now too but I'm lucky to have picked up my volume decades ago. There's a copy in the NYPL. Next closest is Paris or Martinique.
I think the McCutcheon's book is so dear because of its authors not the contents. Father(-in-law) Howard Van Doren Shaw designed some of his last projects in Nassau and their Treasure Island home was a sort of Ragsdale southern campus. Lomax & Charters notwithstanding as far as I'm aware there is no "authentic/traditional" Bahamian (or Bermudian) folk music. It's all tourist industry written and/or promoted since the late 19th century. (eg: The music for "Sloop John B" was written by yet another Chicagoan, vaudeville theater organist A. Leopold Richard.)

Don't think I'd recommend it. It's also available on Spotify. In other words, you don't have to buy it to hear it - but you will have to listen to advertising.
"Deep the Water, Shallow the Shore" by Roger D. Abrahams contains shanties from Nevis, Tobago, and St. Vincent. The Boarding Party sang several of them, including "Solid Fas' "Bully, Long Time Ago" "Yard O, Yard O"
Joe: Calypso Folk sing As long as you're not a 'purist,' it's a great deal for the market price. It's my single biggest volume of Bahamian Blake A. Higgs (Blind Blake) "official" lyrics. Haven't checked them against Mudcat yet. Not sure what to make of the S.C. Patterson songs though.
Robert Mitchum (+Maya Angelou+Alan Arkin+?) I feel the same way about brussels sprouts but who am I to judge? If it shows up on someone's birthday/Hanukka vinyl list get the Bear Family reissue (BAF 18007.)
