Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 11 Sep 11 - 11:01 AM Genie -- obviously it's too late for more program ideas for this year, but do let us know your idea and we'll note it down for consideration for next year. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 11 Sep 11 - 10:59 AM Thanks, Abby. I tried several times but couldn't make the link work -- always worked before, but couldn't do it this time. Anyhow, there it is. Abby's link takes you to Saturday's schedule, and there is a link at the top of that page that takes you to Sunday. As in the past, Dean has worked his magic so that as you hold your cursor over the schedule, the short descriptive blurbs about each workshop appear. We're quite pleased with the schedule. It's very full, of course, but that's a good thing, right? Better too much than too little. Take a good look -- if you are a workshop leader and we have you scheduled in two places at once, let us know NOW and we'll fix it. If you simply want to be in two (or more) places at once, well, join the club. If you still haven't registered for the Getaway, there's still time -- but do it soon! You can go to www.fsgw.org (I've given up trying to do links today...), scroll down just a bit and click on "Fall Getaway." You can register on line or print out the form and mail it in. We have a wonderful lineup of invited guests this year, and anticipate a great weekend. See you all there! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Genie Date: 01 Sep 11 - 06:05 PM (Sigh.) It happened again. I posted yesterday about a program suggestion, and the post DID go through, but it's now disappeared. This is happening too often and it's wearing me down. Genie |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Bill D Date: 31 Aug 11 - 06:43 PM Just don't lose your head over it...we REmember a lot.... (*I* snuck in "4 Wet Pigs" right after "Lucy Wan") |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 31 Aug 11 - 06:37 PM "Dismembership" = What I fear every time I try and sneak in a filksong at an FSGW gathering... 8-) -- Gary |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Severn Date: 31 Aug 11 - 06:03 PM Dismembers only? Or can we have a dismembership drive? As long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg...... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Bill D Date: 30 Aug 11 - 09:43 PM "Unrelieved "dark" ballads/songs" One can always organize an impromptu small session.... Years ago, it was suggested, and Mark Gilston said that "Out on the grass" there would be "Songs of Dismemberment" Oh, we (7-8 of us)had a jolly hour! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Gorgeous Gary Date: 30 Aug 11 - 07:56 PM What Saul said...I have a couple of songs I'm working on learning for general purposes, but a list of workshops would be useful in case it highlights anything I should add. (Or for that matter, anything I should make an extra-special effort to dust off!) -- Gary |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: MMario Date: 30 Aug 11 - 06:53 PM That's what we call Irish Love songs at ren-faire. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Abby Sale Date: 30 Aug 11 - 02:56 PM I guess the suggestion box is closed by now but here's one anyway. Unrelieved "dark" ballads/songs. There's 1,000's to pick from so the darker the better. Easy examples - the hero dies, mother kills the babes, vital battle is lost, no one escapes the plague, door is locked during the fire, etc. Serious, travesty or parody. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: saulgoldie Date: 29 Aug 11 - 08:40 AM So what were the themes, then? I might have to hurryupquick learn a few songs. Saul |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: MMario Date: 10 Aug 11 - 08:59 AM LOL! (in sooth!) I may look these up to learn - if not, at least I now have the references to mention... hee-hee! I have an excuse to sing the "puppy dog song" tho! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Susan of DT Date: 22 Jul 11 - 05:57 AM Mario - #34 Kemp Owen and #36 Laily Worm - stepmother enchants one(#34) or two (#36) stepchildren into monsters. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: MMario Date: 21 Jul 11 - 09:29 AM Now to come up with a ballad featuring a dysfunctional family of mythical creatures hunting and translate it into icelandic. Then I'll onlyh need one song. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Susan of DT Date: 20 Jul 11 - 03:44 PM Glad to hear about the ballad afternoon. I'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 20 Jul 11 - 01:35 PM Interesting ideas, Saul -- but we now have more ideas floating around than we have time available at the Getaway, so we'll have to put those on the back burner. Maybe next year. The program is slowly coming together -- we won't have a schedule grid until mid-September or so, but the workshop lineup looks pretty good so far. There are still too many things hanging fire to post a list at this point, but we'll get there eventually. Looking forward to seeing everyone there! --Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: saulgoldie Date: 18 Jul 11 - 06:18 PM Songs about song... Songs about mortality/death/life, etc... Saul |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 18 Jul 11 - 04:22 PM Glad to hear that, Celtaddict! This year we'll be experimenting with an ongoing ballad workshop all afternoon on Saturday. And if four and a half hours isn't enough, those who want to can meet again on Sunday. There will of course be lots of other stuff going on at the same time! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: GUEST,celtaddict (cookie crumbled?) Date: 18 Jul 11 - 01:23 PM A number of the ones above sound good. I would like ballads, ballads, ballads, and in a workshop longer than an hour! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Rapparee Date: 15 Jul 11 - 02:21 PM Mick and I kinda sorta talked after last year's about doing a program on Revolutionary Songs -- not rebel songs or protest songs, but real songs of revolution. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 15 Jul 11 - 01:52 PM Hey, Amos -- we'll miss you if you can't make it, but Paris ain't too bad.... Severn -- Keep thinking, buddy.. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Amos Date: 15 Jul 11 - 01:49 PM Turns out I may have to pass this year, goldang it. I will try to rustle up some extra dough to make it anyway but my bride and I are going to Paris, after decades of yearning, to walk the Seine together and take the train to Italy as well. If I don't make it, take my blessings and my telepathic beams which will be washing over Camp Getaway until at least 4:00 AM every night!! :D A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Severn Date: 15 Jul 11 - 01:12 PM My computer's down. I will have to call in some ideas. Very soon. Songs of or by frequent Getaway attendees not making it this year would be one. Songs mentioning different types of ships would be another. US-UK relations through the years? Faithful Dogs and Horses? Enforcement of the Law? The coming of roads and other transportation changes and updates? Pre-1960's drug songs through history? Footwear? Rescues? Diseases and Cures? More ideas in detail hopefully to come soon...... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: GUEST,Songbob Date: 08 Jul 11 - 01:19 PM Someone mentioned a banjo and/or guitar workshop, and I'd be available for one of those, if needed. Ditto Civil War songs, songwriting, accompaniment, or whatever. Even jew's harp. As for nifty, new ideas, I'm fresh out of them. Sorry. Bob |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 07 Jul 11 - 05:37 PM Any more ideas? The program committee will be meeting on Monday, so if you have more program suggestions, get 'em in now! We've got a good start with what's here, what we've thought of ourselves, and the things our guests have suggested, but we're always ready for new ideas! Bring it on! --Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 22 Jun 11 - 10:48 PM Micca -- Oh no! We'll surely miss you! We were going to ask you if there was some other topic you'd like to lead, other than parodies or songwriters. Guess we'll have to wait till next year! Guest Babypix -- we did consider Larry Hanks and Deborah Robins, but since they made a rare trip east just this month, we figured they wouldn't be able to come back so soon. Our guest roster is full right now, but Larry and Deborah will be on the list of folks to be considered for next year. Guest XXX -- What's your problem?? We think the facilities at West River are pretty good -- certainly better than those at our previous camp. Others -- thanks for the suggestions! We'll consider them all (but no promises, of course). Keep the ideas coming, please! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: GUEST,babypix Date: 22 Jun 11 - 02:44 PM Larry Hanks & Deborah Robins would love to be considered! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: GUEST Date: 22 Jun 11 - 03:06 AM So glad you are having Sally Rogers back this year. Her workshop on Theory in 2010 was one of the best workshops EVER. I might have to miss Getaway this year (first time in twelve years) so I'm not thinking TOO hard about my favorite topics, yet! |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 15 Jun 11 - 02:35 PM Nancy, I plan to be there and I am willing to help out any way that I can. Joel Mabus, huh? One of my fold kmusic heros. I even think Marge may attend (I know you would have asked). Am trying to interest some people from the Northern Neck to take a trial run at a Getaway. Music can get mighty lonely down here some times. I just caught this thread (limited computer access) so I will try to think up some good workshops. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 13 Jun 11 - 02:16 PM Hey Skarpi, good to hear from you! Sure hope you can make it to the Getaway -- we'd love to see you again! I expect we'd even rise to your challenge of learning to sing in Icelandic! The Getaway is Friday evening September 30 through Monday morning October 3, at West River Conference Center on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. I'm sure we can arrange for someone to pick you up at either Washington National (which some folks call Reagan) Airport, Dulles Airport, or Baltimore/Washington Airport. If you can manage to get to one of those, we'll work out the rest. And yes, of course, you can bring a friend. As you know, scholarship money is available -- just contact Charlie Baum about that. Hope it works out at last! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Dan Schatz Date: 13 Jun 11 - 11:36 AM Yes, Maeve, we really could use a leader for the Yurt Building Chanties workshop! Dan |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2011 Program Suggestions From: Nancy King Date: 13 Jun 11 - 10:04 AM Maeve' idea of Icelandic songs sounds interesting, but I don't see how we could do it unless Skarpi comes to the Getaway. Wonder if there's any chance of that? |
