Scientists at NASA were mystified today when enhanced photos from the surface of one of Jupiter's moons turned up a clear and unmistakable image of what appears to be a large rectangular sign or sculpture in stone that reads "YANKEE GO HOME!" The font has been identified as sans serif. The science community is at a loss to explain this phenomenon, though there were suggestions that it might be a random event caused by cooling masses of magma from a volcanic eruption. Yeah...right! Further enhancement of photos revealed a second apparent sculpture not far away from the first, and it seems to resemble an upright hand with the middle finger extended skyward. Even the well-trimmed nails and cuticles are apparent.

This is theorized to be a frozen geyser. Uh-huh.

Professor Lance Davidson of NASA explained to the press: "It has to be some sort of bizarre natural phenomena that produced these oddly suggestive shapes in stone. After all, if it were an extra-terrestrial message of some sort from sentient beings, aliens if you will, it wouldn't read "Yankee Go Home". It would read "Earthlings Go Home".

I lived half my young life in the USA, Jack. I can spell like either a Canadian or an American, as I please. And I do. In fact, sometimes I deliberately spell like an American as a friendly gesture toward the Americans on this website. A "favor", in other words. ;-) I figure that seeing it spelled "favour" would make them feel that something is wrong.

That is actually an old relic of the American Civil War. Ken Burns mentions it briefly in his PBS series. It was financed and erected by John Paul Getty a great nephew of John Paul Jones and space explorer in response to the Battle of Gettysburg.

Blame me, I put it there. Had a terrible time getting it up there but I figured out that using moonshine as rocket fuel would do the trick. Kendall made the rocket outta old car parts and bobster included his sidewalk blues CD and some great home grown to go inside the thing for the aliens to understand our culture. Yup I have to say it was a mudcat collaboration. Spaw wrote the opening line on it. It reads "placed here by mudcatters for your enjoyment, if you don't like it Jackweed then go fuck yourself"

Ebbie - Yes, I am aware that some people are now claiming that Pluto "isn't a planet"....but I don't give a damn. ;-) Pluto is still a planet as far as I am concerned.

Hi, BWL. You are right, of course, about the verb. However, 'fuckwit' the verb takes an apostrophe, as in

"It's my beluga caviar, and don't fuckwit' it!" According to the OED, this form is first found in early-20th century Bronx, New York.

'Fuckwit' without the apostrophe is a noun and comes from the Old Dutch 'fuck' combined with Anglo-Saxon 'wit', meaning intelligence, (or lack thereof) and it is found as far back as the 13th century.

See how cultivated we Americans are?
