Subject: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Jul 11 - 08:49 PM Last year, I took a fall onto a concrete surface. My rotator cuff took more damage. The forearm was painful with severe tendenitis which finally went away after six months. The wrist is still painful when I apply pressure and I finally gave up and saw my hand specialist. We took x-rays. I turns out that I had blown a tendon in my wrist and have to have one moved to pull everything back into line. With any luck, I will be back out of pain by September. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Ebbie Date: 28 Jul 11 - 10:52 PM Ah,what a bummer. But five years from now it will be only a painful memory. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Rapparee Date: 28 Jul 11 - 10:58 PM I wish that all these 'Catters would knock it off, getting sick and having surgery and stuff. Well, except that I might need knee surgery, so just have it and get well and don't have any more, okay? |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 28 Jul 11 - 11:55 PM Thanks, folks. If I had gone to the doctor a year ago instead of just assuming it was a soft tissue injury, I'd be out of pain and playing my concertina this weekend. Of course, the surgery that my doc will do on me next week is something they couldn't do a few years ago. At least I can still play the kazoo.. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 29 Jul 11 - 12:16 AM When will you have the surgery? And will you be able to play the concertina after the surgery, therapy, and more practice which will probably be needed after therapy ends? |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: olddude Date: 29 Jul 11 - 03:25 AM I am sorry to hear that you are going under the knife ... You are in my thoughts and prayers ... get better soon please |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Charley Noble Date: 29 Jul 11 - 07:25 AM Eric- And I always thought you were immortal! Well, at least surgery is an option now and hopefully after a few months you'll be back to inflicting pain on others by playing concertina, one of my favorite pastimes. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 29 Jul 11 - 10:49 AM Thank you all. What I had thought was either a severe tendinitis or a chipped bone is actually a displacement which caused both a pinched nerve and bone rubbing on bone [very painful]. I have been limiting my playing in hopes of improving the situation but as soon as the doc pointed the displacement out to me it was obvious why surgery was necessary. Here goes, he said, holding his nose and jumping into the pool. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Bonzo3legs Date: 29 Jul 11 - 11:06 AM Good luck with your treatment, my wife has just had a TVT where the womb and (very unusually I gather from the consultant) the bladder is shifted back to where it should be and "taped" into place. Nothing was the "norm" and so she has to stay in hospital for a further night until her waterworks passes more than it retains!! |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: dick greenhaus Date: 29 Jul 11 - 05:59 PM surgery is a nuisance, but pain is much worse. From one who knows. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 29 Jul 11 - 07:09 PM Ebarnacle, all good wishes for the best outcome..no pain! I have been going to a hand therapist for very painful tendinitis in my index fingers which started in Feb. We didn't actually know for sure what it was until about a month ago. Thankfully xrays did not show any arthritis or displacements as you have, but I can sort of imagine the pain you must be having. This is bad enough without the added problems you have. My sympathies! kat |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 29 Jul 11 - 11:54 PM Thank you all. I just got back from the hospital's required presurgical testing and have been told I should expect no major problems. It's been a long day, mostly spent filling paper and waiting to be seen. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Deckman Date: 30 Jul 11 - 12:36 AM ... ever noticed just how much trouble doctors cause ... i suggest you avoid them! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 30 Jul 11 - 01:06 AM In one respect that's true. I didn't know how bad my condition was until he told me. |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 04 Aug 11 - 10:54 PM Well, I'm home. The surgery went well even though it went longer than expected. The doctor was able to do the least traumatic option and I am not in much discomfort. With any luck, I will be in shape to go into Road Warrior with full use of both hands mode by mid September. |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 12 Aug 11 - 03:29 PM Saw the doc on Tues for followup. He examined everything, said I was doing well and rewrapped the arm. I am still not allowed to get the arm wet until Aug 30. Oi, my arm itches. With any luck, the pins come out then--if we can get close enough to my unwashed arm without special breathing gear. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: fat B****rd Date: 12 Aug 11 - 04:24 PM Not too long to wait, easy for me to say, take care and thankyou for the update Charlie. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: gnu Date: 12 Aug 11 - 05:05 PM Itching is ofetn associated with healing. ITCH! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 12 Aug 11 - 06:45 PM Yup, that's what the doc sed. I was actually able to close my trousers and belt today. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 01 Sep 11 - 12:11 PM Went to the doctor for followup this week. If all goes well, I return in two weeks to have the pins and sutures removed. Then begins the rehab. Last week, had a scary event. I had reached the point of being able to dress and buckle my belt. On Wed, I began having major pain in the entire forearm, radiating from the wrist as far as the lateral bicep. Dr. Rick instructed me to bedrest with the arm elevated. It worked. Not only did the pain ease, the edema in my calves and feet reduced. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: maeve Date: 01 Sep 11 - 12:31 PM What a relief! How's the itching; any better? |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: gnu Date: 01 Sep 11 - 03:55 PM Good news. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 01 Sep 11 - 06:22 PM Not too bad but you should see the size of those pins--all the way across the wrist. No wonder it hirts if I move less than perfectly or try to flex the wrist, even by accident. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: maeve Date: 01 Sep 11 - 07:03 PM Yep- It does take a looong time for it to heal. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Bobert Date: 01 Sep 11 - 07:04 PM Better days a'comin'... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 02 Sep 11 - 04:31 AM what Bobert said |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Sep 11 - 12:45 AM Sorry about the pain and hoping that healing and therapy brings you relief soon. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 13 Sep 11 - 08:26 PM Ok, saw the doc today. He pulled the pins and removed the sutures. It already hurts less and I can move the wrist a little. Also, when the sports car hits a bump, it's not excruciating, just enough to remind me a little that it's sore. Now, I begin the pre-rehab work by gently flexing and making a fist. Wow, was the area around the pins ugly! |
