Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 19 Jun 12 - 09:37 AM Lass, I don't want to even consider going there. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 18 Jun 12 - 10:26 PM Nice to read that you and your concertina are performing together again. Let us know if your other wrist needs surgery. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Bobert Date: 18 Jun 12 - 09:34 PM Contertina and fool in the same sentence??? How can that be??? Jus' funnin'... Good on you, E-barn... B;~) |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: GUEST,999 Date: 18 Jun 12 - 09:13 PM You beat it once, EB, you'll beat it twice. Congratulations. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: maeve Date: 18 Jun 12 - 09:09 PM You've done well! You'll deal with what you must; good for you for making such an effort to move forward! Maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 18 Jun 12 - 05:40 PM OK, I did it! At Clearwater's Revival I took part in two sets and did not make too much of a fool of myself on the concertina. The first time I've played concertina in public since last July. Unfortunately, it is looking increasingly likely that the right rotator cuff is next on the agenda. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 03 Apr 12 - 10:58 AM Yeah, Kat! One of the most challenging things about this process was figuring out how to turn the ignition key without pain. The surgery limited wrist rotation and made it difficult. I now have two techniques which work. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 02 Apr 12 - 11:37 PM Great! I sat in our driveway on Sunday and proved to myself I could turn the key to start it. I am so ready to start driving, again You continue to inspire me! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: gnu Date: 02 Apr 12 - 09:14 PM More good news is good news. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: maeve Date: 02 Apr 12 - 08:50 PM More progress? That's great. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 02 Apr 12 - 08:21 PM Today, Lady Hillary was exhausted so I drove us home in the sports car. First time handling manual shift since July of last year. No pain, no problems. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 31 Mar 12 - 12:47 AM Thank you. I am being very cautious about it. I had it once in a shoulder and it hurt like heck and didn't do much good. The hand therapist said, though, in the thumb there is just the one tendon and the results are usually pretty good using cortisone. I am not in any rush. Still doing the exercises and using a cloth splint to keep it from locking. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 30 Mar 12 - 11:37 PM Be careful with cortisone. I used it for tennis elbow many years ago. Each shot was less effective and more painful. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: fat B****rd Date: 30 Mar 12 - 04:19 PM Great news EB. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 30 Mar 12 - 12:10 AM That's great! I am about ready to go back to the hand doc and try some cortisone for my thumb tendon...I've got trigger thumb...how dumb does that sound?!**bg** Still need to do something with my left index finger. The end acts as if it's been fused into a bent position, no arthritis or anything; just aggro on the tendons. Hard to fiddle, etc. Keep playing and letting us know how it's going. You are an inspiration! kat |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Greg B Date: 29 Mar 12 - 11:29 PM "no [major] errors" So, you've gotten better over your hiatus? (Just bustin' your balls, old friend.) |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 29 Mar 12 - 04:01 PM Just played a couple of songs with no pain and no [major] errors. More to come! |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 02 Feb 12 - 11:50 PM That's all great news and progress EB!! Slow and steady definitely helps to improve things. maeve, goodonya, too! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 02 Feb 12 - 11:02 PM Wow, I seem to have passed a milestone. Typing with both hands just got faster and easier...if not more accurate. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 01 Feb 12 - 03:12 AM definitely, keep up the good work - slowly & steadily |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 31 Jan 12 - 10:40 PM I'd say you are making good progress! |

Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 31 Jan 12 - 09:46 PM Forgot to add the qualifier: poorly! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 31 Jan 12 - 09:45 PM Did three verses of Shoals of Herring on the box today but it's a start. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: gnu Date: 27 Jan 12 - 02:17 PM Attitude is good! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: maeve Date: 27 Jan 12 - 04:37 AM Good for you! I know you'll manage any adaptations. I just made the same discovery on fiddle. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 26 Jan 12 - 11:31 PM Just tried a few notes on the ol' squeezebox. Sounded terrible, but it looks as though I'll be able to play again with a good bit of work. I definitely have to build up the wrist. It looks as though I've got the keyboard position about right for two handed typing. I refuse to be disabled. Somewhat l |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: fat B****rd Date: 26 Jan 12 - 06:14 AM Yes indeed. Good news. We hope to hear more. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 26 Jan 12 - 03:35 AM good news |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 25 Jan 12 - 11:26 PM Good to hear of your progression. That thumb is a pretty handy thing, isn't it? I still wear a cloth open-ended "sock" on my right one, for now, as the tendons are in tough shape. It keeps me from bending it incorrectly which can cause extreme and immediate pain! BUT therapy is helping AND using a voice recognition program to type. (Ya gotta birthday coming up or something so you can ask for it as a pressie?) Good luck with the rest of your recovery! kat |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 25 Jan 12 - 08:22 PM Improvement, still! |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: gnu Date: 25 Jan 12 - 04:40 PM Cooking from scratch? >;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 25 Jan 12 - 04:27 PM Oh yeah, Lady Hillary has plans now that I can use both hands--cooking more, resuming other responsibilities around the house, etc. No more excuses. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 25 Jan 12 - 04:24 PM Yeah, the cast came off yesterday. The pins are out. Two weeks with a splint and I hope to be able to keep the wristy unsupported. When the cast came off, the first thing I did was gently scratch--what a luxury. One thing I had not counted on was how much the loss of wrist flex changes the way the right hand moves. I now have to learn new postures so I can type two handed again. The past 5 months have given me great respect for the theory that the opposable thumb was a major step in the development of homo sap. Very definitely limited wrist flexion due to the fusion and the joint looks quite ugly. As they say in Maine, it feels some bettah, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 24 Dec 11 - 12:13 AM Eek! Glad you got help. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 23 Dec 11 - 10:41 PM Bad news-Good news. Yesterday, I was suddenly in pain where the pins enter the wrist. Called the doc this AM. He told me to come right in. After removing the cast, it was obvious that something bad was going on. Dr. Rick examined the area and prescribed an antibiotic. The new cast still fits into my jacket. It's nice to deal with a doc who gives a damn, but I've been lucky that way. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Janie Date: 21 Dec 11 - 10:41 PM Haven't posted much, but still thinking of you and glad to hear the recovery is going well, discomfort and all.... |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 21 Dec 11 - 07:36 PM hooray |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 21 Dec 11 - 04:23 PM Wow, I just discovered that the new cast also fits in my normal [for me] sized jackets. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: ChanteyLass Date: 20 Dec 11 - 09:11 PM Glad to hear you are in a shorter cast and using some of those muscles again. Sorry about the itching, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: katlaughing Date: 20 Dec 11 - 07:31 PM That is good news! As to the itching, when my kids had chickenpox, I set the hair blow dryer on cool and aimed it at the itching. It seemed to help a bit. If you can get to any of the itchy bits, a little dab of witch hazel on a cotton ball will help relieve it to. If you don't mind spending a little bit of money, there are some incredible products available at www.amerigel.com which relieve itching and greatly speed the healing process. From past experience, I can attest to it being worth every penny. Anyway, good for you and thanks for letting us know, kat |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: wysiwyg Date: 20 Dec 11 - 07:20 PM But just think of all the opportunities this gives to practice bad words! Keep track of 'em in email in case I ever need 'em? :~) ~S~ |
Subject: RE: BS: More surgery From: EBarnacle Date: 20 Dec 11 - 06:44 PM The worst is actually the itching. When the old cast came off, there were large flakes of dead skin all about. Lady Hillary and I insisted on a thorough wash and scrub before the new cast went on. It still itches. |
