Subject: RE: Fastnet Sea Music Festival From: Charley Noble Date: 01 Aug 11 - 07:39 AM Here's a poem by Cicely Fox Smith in tribute to Fastnet Light. I don't think anyone has set it to music but why not have a go at it; the second verse would work well as a chorus: Old Fastnet The ships to the westward, by night and by day, In storm and in sunshine go forth on their way, The big ships and little ships, swift ships and slow . . . And Fastnet – old Fastnet – he watches 'em go. Hull down to the westward they vanish afar, Like the waft of a wing or the flash of a star, A feather of smoke on the rim of the sky . . . And Fastnet – old Fastnet – he waves 'em good-bye. Strange stars will behold them, strange harbours will know, Strange lights for their guiding will beacon and glow, And they'll maybe remember and maybe forget That Fastnet – old Fastnet – he's waiting there yet. A-waiting the day, be it distant or soon, When the ships from the westward, by night or by noon, In storm or in sunshine rejoicing will come . . . And Fastnet – old Fastnet – he'll welcome them home! Notes: From Rovings: Sea Songs and Ballads, edited by Cicely Fox Smith, published by Elkin Mathews, London, UK, ©1921, p. 50. "Fastnet" here refers to the lighthouse at Fastnet Rock off Southern Ireland, the last land to be sighted by early Irish immigrants and the first to be sighted by returning trans-Atlantic sailors. Subject: RE: Fastnet Sea Music Festival From: The Sandman Date: 14 Sep 11 - 08:17 AM Jimmy Crowley is not just as a tradition bearer, but also as a stylish songwriter. His song My Love is a Tall Ship, was adopted as an anthem for sailors everywhere and was used in the documentary film on the Tall Ships' Race made by the National Television service R.T. E. which proclaimed to those who pigeon-holed Jimmy Crowley as being the "voice of Cork" and nothing else, that there was much more to this man. Jimmy is appearing at the Fastnet Maritime festival, JUNE 16 2012 |
Subject: RE: Fastnet Sea Music Festival From: The Sandman Date: 04 Oct 11 - 07:50 AM DAVE & HELEN HOWARD Dave & Helen have been singing and playing together for over 40 years. Originally from the Manchester area in Northern England, they played in and ran many folk clubs in the area. Helen's main love is in the traditional songs of the British Isles and she has a particular liking for Scots material as they lived in Glasgow for 5 years in the 70s. Dave casts his net a little wider taking in blues, bluegrass and most guitar based music, even playing lead guitar in an "Elvis" band recently! He still travels back to Lancashire regularly to play mandolin with the "Oldham Tinkers" group. He has a good collection of classic guitars and mandolins which are his great passion – his playing reflects this. He'll probably have a few of his "babies" at the concert. The material will be anything from trad to modern, with a few mandolin tunes on the way. They will have a CD for sale containing a good cross section of their material. |

Subject: RE: Fastnet Sea Music Festival From: The Sandman Date: 12 Jan 12 - 01:55 PM BY ÁILÍN QUINLAN BALLYDEHOB will host Morris dancers from the UK and Breton dancers from Brittany as part of a brand-new festival celebrating the local tradition of sand-boating. Pirates will also be a feature of Ballydehob's new Fastnet Maritime Folk Festival – the fifth annual festival run by the village – which will focus on sea songs and shanties with traditional music and dance from Ireland and abroad. The idea behind the festival, according to organiser and musician Richard Miles, is to celebrate and promote the village's old tradition of sandboating. 'In the 19th century, the government financed the collection of sand from the beaches – it was dredged and used as a fertiliser. 'They used special 'sandboats' with flat bottoms to collect the sand. It was a big source of employment in this area – Ballydehob, Skibbereen and Sherkin. A lot of local families were involved,' he said, adding that Ballydehob still has a bar called The Sandboat in memory of the tradition. 'There is a strong maritime tradition in Ballydehob, and this festival will feature everything from Morris dancers from the UK to Breton traditional dancing, to a group of shanty singers from Wales,' said Mr Miles, who explained the festival will run in June. 'Shanty songs are traditional sea-work songs,' he said, adding that the festival would also feature a number of traditional Irish music sessions as well as stalls, street music, a craft market and a car boot sale. 'We will also have a bestdressed pirate competition and street busking. We very much want this to be a community festival and not one which is just based in the pubs, so the community hall will be a very important venue.' Miles got the idea for the festival one day as he thought about the village's maritime tradition, and was intrigued by the concept of sand-boating. The Fastnet festival will be the fifth annual festival run by villagers: 'Ballydehob is the land of festivals – our festival season begins in March and doesn't end til nearly November,' said Mr Miles. The season in Ballydehob kicks off on March 30th with a traditional Irish song and dance festival which runs until April 1st. This is followed by the international jazz festival, which runs from May 4th to 7th. The Fastnet Maritime Festival will this year take place from June 15th to 17th. August brings the Ballydehob Village Festival, which runs from 11th to 19th, while the Old Time Threshing Festival runs on October 27th and 28th. |
