Lists!! I see packing lists. Stacks!! Stacks of camping gear are appearing all over the house. That can only mean one thing - the 40th annual Walnut Valley Festival is only a couple weeks away! We'll be headed to Winfield the week before the festival itself. Who else is going?

Put us down as a probable.

We've been too disorganized from our move a year ago to even make lists this year. I usually start "getting ready" about March 1 (to get the hard stuff squared away before starting the income taxes); but as of now we don't even have a list started, much less anything loaded and prepped.

Line Up: 07:00 25 August. We may miss being there for the first time in years. Still trying to get "her" to tell me how many conflicting obligations we have.

Land Rush: 07:00 08 September. If we don't make this, we won't know where we are. If we do make it, I may be too ....(tired?) ... to know where I am, but Lin should have the coffee (lots of cofee) on.

Festival starts: 14 September. We hope ...

All Done: 18 September. Hope we survive ...

John

Hi John,
Sure hope ya'll can make it. There's nothing finer than bumming a cup of Lin's coffee and sitting around in the shade of the Pecan Grove.

Our plan is to drive up the 9th and spend the first weekend out at the farm doing the family thing. We'll shift our base of operations to fairgrounds the next Monday. Hope to see you there.

Just so's everybody knows what's goin' on:

The OFFICIAL site for the Festival is at:
Walnut Valley Festival

And "Alternate Winfield" sit was set up some years ago, by a fellow rumored to have created and maintained the official one, now maintained(?) by his son if the backroom scuttlebutt is accurate. Links to a number of "Camp Websites" put up by regulars, and although they're rather "dated" by now Don, the creator, made a tour one year and recorded some campground pickin. Check out the "Virtual Winfield" link:
Pickers' Paradise

The "vanity site" for the camp Lin & I have been attempting to get organized is at:
Waterhole Camp
Too many pictures. None (almost) of me, since I took most of them and was on the other side of the camera(s).

PREVIOUS MUDCAT THREADS: (I've used full links, so that anyone who wants can access from "off mudcat." In IE, Save As – archive web page .mht will put the page on your drive that will open in your browser with working links. At least it works for me. I assume(?) other browsers can save a thread page in re-usable form.

Add about another 14 years or so before those when I was there, but I think 2003 was our first post about it at the 'cat. Several of those threads show a bunch of "related threads."

Oh yeah, National Weather Service - Hydrological Prediction Service - Walnut River - Winfield is where you check to see if the river's behaving. (See the "Festival Hazards" thread?) Looks really calm now. (16 ft is flood stage.)

Sorry about that Tom. We've had some of the same troubles this year and can certainly sympathise. The photos on the link John posted above will probably give you lots of nostalgia.

It appears we will be adding some more to them again this year. We bought our tickets and are now consulting John's Master List trying to get a few things done. Uncle Phil, you know the coffee's ALWAYS on, so you and Michelle please do come hang out. Same invite goes for all the other 'Catters: find Thumper and join us under the awning; we'd love to meet ya or renew acquaintance. Gary? Lynn? Bill and Deanna? Y'all attending this year?

Yay! Finally getting into the mood! Music, old and new friends, camping -- okay, okay, I'm going out to stock the camper now.

Good on ya, Lin and John! Looking forward to seeing you guys. We had an email from Deanna and they will be no-shows this year, having already used up her vacation days.

I'll see you and James at the Great Plains Dulcimer Alliance picnic!

Will look for ya Phil! I hope to be in the same spot more or less,
but I've gone with the flow so long that I feel like plankton now.
Saw a monarch trying to migrate out of the hot zone this week, and checked the site, and dang if the line up isn't TODAY!   Well, maybe I can get organized by tonight and shove off tomorrow, get a good spot in the sunshine and wind until the Rush. Nothing like the sound of generators and the scent of spent fuel and holding tank fragrances in the air!   I really need to upgrade my attitude!

A list - yeh, that's what I need, a list!   Strings, beer, maybe some chow, coffee and my borrowing coffee cup, Bailey's, etc.   I'm off to stock the camper, thanks for the reminder.   Where's that pen? No, the one that still works...   Hm.

Oh yeah...what did I do with that mop bucket? James, you just need to hear some dulcimer music--and so do I. We're not in lineup yet either; may go stake out a tarp this afternoon if John ever recovers from two days with no sleep.

Sorry to hear Bill and Deanna won't be there. I know they've been pretty busy nearer to home, but we'll miss them. Uncle Phil and Michele, James and Jean, see ya at the Picnic if not before.

Lists: we have these in the camper; we have this in the truck; we have more stuff in the Pace. We need: more coffee and more sugar; tea; ice and stuff in the fridge; bedding back in the camper after washing; find tools and supplies in the big shed and put in the truck(s); load scooters and tarps....ah hell, that's enough! Let's go!

Paddle harder...I hear banjos!

For those who might meet us at the fest - or might want to avoid us:

We've given up on the idea of trying to steal and fight for our usual camping spot in the Pecan Grove (where all the walnut trees are) and will be coming in right after Landrush to park in the Handicap area, hopefully out on the grass north of the Walnut Grove (where most of the pecans are).

We tried to talk them into letting us come down and sit in the lineup, and just step aside during Landrush, but they said they shoot on sight if anybody tries to do that. Since all who've been there are aware that they've never made a rule that doesn't apply fairly and equally to everybody, we got scared and decided to come "later."

They assured us that there'll be plenty of space and electric hookups; but I'm not real sure about the plumbing. We've got some onboard water, but it's a small tank - 30 gallons, about what Lin drinks in tea in 3 days - so we may have to haul some water before it's all over with, but I think we can manage that if we need to.

About the only thing not onboard now is the tubtub bass. We debated whether to leave it home since it's getting kinda creaky from sittin' out in the weather for 25 or so years. (Try that with your fancy Martins!) Still debating.

John

Plenty of water hookups in the HC area on pavement north of the contest barn, but everyone is squeezed together in small spaces. Don't know about the grassy area north of there.

Last year we got there in the middle of the night before Landrush and were sent out to lineup rather than being allowed into the HC area. A few hours later at crack 'o dawn they insisted that we take our Landrush turn to get to the HC area. No stepping aside allowed! No one got shot. It was the start of a long week and we were still trying to conserve ammunition.

Although we figure we've been eligible to use the handicap area for several years, we've avoided it because it appeared that "newcomers" to the area nearly always ended up on the pavement, next to the red barn, behind the lemonade stand, across from the calliope, next door to the carny barker, with no shade (and the pavement gets HOT!) and so much noise you can't jam under your own awning.

We've know at least three couples who parked there, and none of them came back the next year. It's possible that they only had to park there 'cause the spent too much time looking for a better spot before they commited to the HC area(?).

I do have a drill up to the task, but only one carbide bit big enough to drill in tent stakes. I figure the bit's only good for about four holes, since there's concrete under the asphalt, and I'd need six to tie the awning down if there's a "mediocre brisk" Kansas breeze. (The worst canvas disasters in the wind during last year's linup - that I saw - were up on the pavement where they couldn't tie down properly. But then we don't get 60 mph gusts more than 3 years out of 5.)

They assured us this year that there's plenty of space and lots of hookups on Landrush day, but I just don't remember if I've seen any water taps north of the W. G. road. If we can get on the grass, we'll deal with the rest of it. There's no water on the asphalt part of the HC, and the roads immediately nearby probably have too much traffic to "politely" run a hose across them; but I usually carry about 350 feet of hose just out of habit so if there's a tap we'll be able to get to it, although I won't swear we'll want to before we see the whole situation.

Of course since I never smell bad I can skip the showers for a week or so, but it might be nice to be able to wash down the other better half a couple of times. just so's she don't get too randy.

From what I've seen, the HC area generally all park lined up in rows like good little soldiers, which prevents getting face-to-face with the neighbors and joining up a pair of awnings to make a jam circle big enough for more than a trio if one's a bass - maybe a quintet if three are itty bitty fiddles(?). It's probably a rule that I never learned, that you have to "conform" more when you start getting degenerate decrepit. But maybe you don't...?

I guess we'll see about it.

John

I was cleaning the office this evening and found some stuff from Winfield. I was reminded of the Odd Instruments workshop. Dave Para was introducing a musical saw player, whose name I can't dredge up. Anyway, Dave reminisced for a while about coming to early Winfields and how much fun it was to listen to Art Theime playing his musical saw.

Lin in Kansas has done her usual dirty deed of posting our pictures from the 2011 Walnut Valley Festival at our usual site.

We didn't get quite as many photos this year as in previous years; but since past years include several thousand (it seems like) pictures, we're hoping that the recent ones will come up at the top. Look for 2011 in the captions.

A couple of other people have promised to send us their pics for posting, so there may be additions later – if any of those who made promises meet the requirements of being sober enough then to have taken any pictures, and if they sober up enough (now or soon) to get them sent before next year.

Good pictures to remind me of the happy chaos that Winfield becomes...........after it dawned on me that this is one more site that requires javascript to show the images, and makes no attempt to warn anyone. (I habitually surf with javascript disabled)

John... I do like your Aug 31st description of the gentle weather conditions one can expect! My wife & I drove to Kansas from Wash DC in 1981 and camped in a tent....and it was one of the windy years. We tried going to the lake, but she was not sure that sandblasting was what she wanted.
