Subject: Winfield 2007 WVA Festival (36th year)
From: JohnInKansas
Date: 04 Aug 07 - 07:16 AM

Time is growing short, and I'm not packed yet.

In reverse order of happening - last first.

Official Festival Dates: September 12 – 16, 2007 (Wed thru Sun)
The official festival is when all the hired guns get there and put on their acts, and the hobby and craft people are set up to sell their stuff to pay the mortgages. A few music vendors bring their really high priced stuff – good place to look them over if you can look rich enough.

(Martin gets kinda testy if I try to touch anything, but the Ohme guys are all usually pretty much asleep. McSpadden is usually too crowded to get close to unless you flash a wad of money over the heads of the people in front of you – then they're pretty friendly about letting you do tryouts. Mel Bay usually has a large booth, sometimes with stuff that's not easily found elsewhere – including on their website.)

Landrush September 6, 2007 (approximately 07:00)
All campers must exit the campground and re-enter in lineup order as part of, or after, landrush to try to get their favored campsites and electrical and water hookups as needed. When you get to camp after landrush, you're "at the festival" even though it doesn't start for about a week.

Lineup 07:00 September 1, 2007
The WVA takes over the fairground and you're "allowed" to line up for the big Landrush. No permanent setup – it's just to get in line and wait, but the pickin' sort of gets started pretty regularly then.

Pre-Lineup: 07:00 am 23 August 2007
Unofficially, you can camp in the RV park for 14 consecutive days, if the grounds haven't been reserved by someone. At least one group that meets there has been "uncooperative in the extreme" and due to their likely presence, and the need to clean up flood effects, the fairground crew has very specifically requested NO EARLY ARRIVALS.

The county has stated, a little more specifically than in previous years, that no one who enters prior to 07:00 am, Thursday, 23 August 2007 will be "in line," but in a rare departure they have said (maybe inadvertently) that "order of entry after that time" will be tracked for purposes of the eventual lineup to get into the lineup to get in line.

See more to follow.

John

Of perhaps special interest this year:

Because of flooding at the facility in early June, the fairground crew has requested that people avoid arriving before 23 August.

Don Shorock has posted some pictures from just before the river crested, for the curious. There's a link right at the top of the Pickers' Paradise page for the curious, or go direct to:
Rainy June Weather…

Click the 2007 link for this year, (be sure to scroll down to the pictures) or –

compare the 2005 flood when it was about the same (step through the 3 days of pictures).

Although Don "misdated" some of this year's pictures, making it a little ambiguous, my reading of the times given (corrected) versus the hydrological data from the National Weather Service indicates the water may have risen additionally as much as about 4 feet after the pictures were taken.

The county fair at the same fairgrounds should be starting about now. We drove through the pecan grove to take a look around last week, and although some of it is still a bit damp it should be in good enough shape by the time we all get there.

Brag about it here, if you can make it. Whine if you can't.

Let people know who to look for or make plans to meet.

Stop by if you get there. Ask anybody in the Pecan grove where "Thumper" is – we're pretty notorious.
(If I live through the hassle of getting everything loaded, and we actually get there.)

John -
We've been on the phone with the relatives in Winfield and they say no big water problems with the county fair.

We haven't started packing yet, but Michelle's been making a list. I'm on the hook to cook for the Downtown Association again so we need to be there by Wednesday. I'm thinking we drive up on Saturday the 8th and just hang out until the festival starts.

Phil -

I think I've mentioned that you guys with good cameras make me sick. You probably didn't even have to photoshop all of your pictures like I do. (grin here).

On our drive-through last week, the river was a little lower than in your couple of shots in the top row. That little mud spot just behind where our camper has been the last couple of years had 3 - 5 inches of standing water still in it, but it will have about a month to dry up some. There are no big rains in the long term forecasts that I've seen. There were several campers in the Pecan Grove getting set up for the fair, so it was already "usable" at least.

The NOAA River Report has been showing the river actually lower than in recent past years, although they've "bumped it up" a couple of times since the early June flood. That was probably to bring down the upstream impoundments to give them some reserve space in case of later rain.

I'm expecting to go down early on 23AUG for the pre-lineup, and will probably stay in the camper and use the time to put everything together that fell apart last year. If we work it like past years, Lin will get there about 31AUG to be there for the "official" Lineup on 01SEP. She'll probably be there most of the time after that.

Well crud, all this time I thought the photographer had something to do with it. Now I come to find out it was the camera all along.

Glad to hear that it's drying out. The Winfield kin missed their annual Texas visit because they had to stay home to keep the basement pumped out. Michelle's cousin scouts cotton for a living since retiring from the airplane factory. He says the cotton and winter wheat were all but wiped out by the rain.

No worries, though. We'll show up fully equiped for all four seasons and for sunshine or storms, as Lin once advised us to do, and probably use everything we brought with us during the week.

Art--We wish you could be there, too! We'll be thinking of you.
Uncle Phil--The temp today in Kansas is 100+ degrees. You might think on packing more summer than winter this year! Unless, of course, it rains... Your pictures are gorgeous, and the camera only takes what the photographer points at, so you must have something to do with it, yes?
LEJ--Where will you be camped, do you know yet? We'd love to meet you! If you see a little red scooter with a dulcimer case in the back tootling around the Walnut Grove, yell at me will ya? And if you make it by the Pecan Grove, keep an eye out for Thumper and the big ol' washtub bass. The coffee pot is always on, so come on by any time. Even 3 AM most nights! :>)

Sorcha, you'll have to plan vacation time better next year, darn it. Sorry you can't make it--they had 40-some fiddlers at the Fiddle Fest canopy in the Walnut Grove last year; made a CD, too, and sounded pretty good, but you know they can always use another good musician. Are you close enough to make it for the weekend at least?

Uncle Phil -

Since Art's asleep or just tryin' to 'member how long it's been:

It's almost impossible to get to using any rational method of browsing the WVA website, but a Google "search only at" finds:

Art Thieme

If you can get to that point, there are links to the lists of performers who appeared on the same bill (with smaller names on the ad posters of course - the way I remember it, at least) in the years that Art was there. Most of the names in those lists are linked back to a list of what years each of them appeared, making it possible that someone might stumble onto lots of lists of names but not too much else.

The "WVA Archives" show Art performing there 11 years; in every year 1978 thru 1986, and then again in 1990 and 1994. There's been a friendly ghost that walks around impersonating him in other years, according to some of us who will swear to hearing his jokes late at night, but those years are the "official" history, I guess.

[The WVA website is really tough to navigate in, since it's all one page with bookmarks rather than pages with distinct URLs; and the bookmarks (local links) are tough to dig out.]

John,
Thanks for finding that! I knew it was at the site-somewhere---but I couldn't locate it. One of those years I played was the year Winfield had 2 festivals---one in Spring and one in September. I don't think the idea worked real well and Bob Redford and Art Coats just let it go.

$#%@%!*!

Four days left to pack things up, and I haven't even figured out how to make the replacements for half the stuff we broke last year - much less how to get it all in the truck.

That's assuming I'm still planning to get in the line for the line on Thursday morning.

I can remember when I could zip right through getting all set up in less than 3 months; but that was before we needed scooters and bicycles to get around, resuscitators and pumps to keep the bods functioning, and big reefers to keep the meds cool. I may have to leave the table saw at home this year to get all the life support equipment in.

The space formerly reserved in the truck for my beer has already been packed with our pills and potions for a couple of weeks. Did someone say "feeling oldish?"

See y'all there(?)

So far the weather looks good. We had a little over a week of 3-digit temp days, but it's cooled off a bit for the last three or 4 days (low to mid 90s F range). Light showers Fri, and forecast for scattered showers Sat & Sun, but I don't think we got any of it. Scattered/intermittent wind gusts to about 30-35 mph, but that's normal here.

I'm down to loading a couple of bigger items - bicycle, step ladder, and cart for the potty system - but still have lots of "handfull" items to tuck in. I found one low tire on the camper when I hauled it out of the back yard, so I'll have to check it tomorrow and make sure it's holding the refill. If not I may have to drag the rig down to the tire shop to see about a fix, but that's a fairly minor thing if I get finished with the "last-minute items" loading in time.

Hey John, do you know how and where they will lineup this year. Last year the line up was in the ball field area but in other years the walnut grove for pre line and then the pecan grove for the "actual" lineup. Last year they changed the format due to the wet grounds. Any idea of the plans this year.
Oh and we're downsizing this year to a Casita trailer - small but cozy!
Thanks

Bill -

The simple answer is that if you're there before Sept 6 (Landrush) you'll park on the ball fields or on the paved roads around the grandstand. ...Unless someone changes their mind.

If you've been there, you probably know that nothing is ever certain or consistent; but:

The pre-lineup has been pretty much out on the ball fields for the past couple of years. Back in the olden days they used to just let early-earlies camp in the regular RV park (walnut grove) and "pre-lineup" was only by custom among the early-earlies (and was frequently violated, mostly by local Winnies). Three or 4 years ago the river came up and they decided to move everybody and several were already stuck. (And they found out the county didn't own anything big enough to help move some of the 5th wheelers that were already stuck.)

Last year they had leased the fairground to a group that decided they didn't want to let anyone use the RV area until they'd finished their cleanup; but since they weren't sure they could legally keep people out they demanded $100 per day from anyone who tried to park there. (Only about two people paid it.)

Also in previous years, they nearly always made early-earlies move to lines in the Pecan Grove for lineup; and of course everyone has to move for Landrush.

For the past two years, once you parked you stayed there, and when Landrush came you ran from wherever you landed first. Two years ago there was some problem with people who got into areas where they shouldn't have been, and a few had to move to different lineup positions. Last year, according to unofficial reports and so far as I know, the Mayor of Winfield(?), who "pulled rank" to get into the Walnut Grove early, was about the only one they had to move.

The only "released and official" information is that the only entry open on August 23 (this Thursday) for early arrivals will be the "14th Avenue" entrance, and on/after that date lineup numbers will be given when you enter.

The assumption would be that once the early-earlies are numbered and settled, they'll resume letting people in at the front gate.

Since those who go early will virtually all be there because of competition for the Walnut Grove and Pecan Grove areas, they'll likely try to leave them both completely empty until Land Rush.

John

All this foo foo raw about line up, pre line up....hey, just GO.
And I gotta love it that the Mayor was moved out! LOL!

I remember waaaay back when, the Festival was quite frowned upon. All those hippies and dope smokers moving into OUR town for a WEEK or more! Our children will be corupted and our lives destroyed!

LOL! All true attitudes, I assure you. I lived on W. 14th just a couple blocks east of the RR crossing/dike, and the cloud of weed smoke was enough to get us high just sitting on the front porch.

From: JohnInKansas

The early lineups are only needed because there are a lot more people than space to put them in, if the people have particular preferences about where and how they camp.

When I first started going, the "civilized" people all wanted to camp in the RV park - now by tradition called the "Walnut Grove." It's adjacent to the fairgrounds and stadium, has electricity and water for those with "campers" and/or who need those amenities, but can only hold about 800(?) "camps." If you want to get space, and/or one of the 700 or so "hookups" there, you've got to get in line to be among the first few hundred to get in. You might find a space, but not be near a hookup, but more likely you'll find a hookup with no place to park where you can access it.

The "Pecan Grove" where we camp and have camped since 1985 has only about 80 electrical hookups, and three or 4 water taps. If you want a space in a particular area, and especially if you need electricity and water, you almost have to get within the limited space "in the oval" formed by the park's main roads. There are about 30 electrical outlets "outside the oval," but only along a short stretch of the oval road. Those usaually are taken by early arrivals within the oval who run their power cords back in across the road. There is NO WATER within at least 100 yards for anyone "outside" the oval in the Pecan Grove. Two thirds of the land area referred to as "Pecan Grove" or "South Camp" is outside the oval.

It's only been three or four years that they've allowed camping on the "ballparks" - referred to now as the "East Camp." This area is nice and flat, at a higher elevation so it's reliably dry, but no campfires or other "open flames" are allowed (even for cooking), there are fewer than a dozen electrical hookups near the grandstand, and again, NO WATER, and ABSOLUTELY NO NATURAL SHADE.

If one just wants to "be there," and can get by without electricity and water, there is no real problem finding a place to park it all until the very last day or two before the official start of the festival (a week after landrush). If you need more water than you can, or are willing to, lug by hand to your camp, you need to be there within the first day or two after landrush.

If you need an electrical hookup, as we do to run all our medical devices, you'll have to be among the first fifty or so into the Pecan Grove at landrush, and that means you'll need to be in line at least within the first 4 or 5 days that anyone is admitted to wait in line.

It gets even more complicated if you're part of a larger group that likes to "camp together;" and several traditional "Camps" have over a hundred regulars attending every year. A couple of them run over 300 people, and there are no "space reservations" to be made to keep them all assembled. It's be there, or go camp somewhere else.

A few people do rent a motel, or camp at the nearest lake, but to get a motel room reservations must be made more than two years in advance** and it's about the same at the accessible parks within any reasonable distance. The nearest commercial RV park is about 50 miles from the festival, and is usually booked nearly a year ahead.

** A few years ago, we were unable to book a space to board the dog for the week when we called 11 months in advance. They've found a few more places that theoretically can keep your pets for you, but we haven't needed to check what the lead time is - or whether they're places we'd have been willing to leave our pet with.

If you're alone, with a tent or small camper, or even with a group of a dozen or so who can all arrive together, there's a place to camp even if you come in at the last minute. If you need hookups - especially electric - or if your group is more than a few and people have to come in over a period of time, it will be difficult to keep them all together unless someone, preferably a major part of your group, can get there early.

John

Yes, John...it's just gotten so big. Almost too big in some ways. Bill, I was at the Spring Thing too! Those were the days, my friend......and the June Jamboree.

The last time I was there...1981, I think, we just drove in and set up a square tent...no luxuries, but found a space easily. ...it was a VERY windy year, with dust blowing all weekend. Rita did NOT care for the amenities...*grin*...

I took Lin to WVA for her first time, as a detour on the way from Seattle to visit her mother in Texas. Six foot dome tent and one cooler. Unfortunately, one of our group - Resident Nurse James - showed her his Coleman popup and let slip that some of them come with -

Only 26 days until it's all over for another year.... (sniff sob)

If I can get all the little last-minute details pulled together, I should pull out to get to Winfield and get in line sometime around 04:00 in the morning, so I'll be "out of touch" with phones and internet for about the next month, except for possible intermittent trips back home. We usually make two or three trips back for the details that were omitted, and to see if daughter inlaw is taking proper care of our children. The "kids" - Bat, Bela, Lon, and Vincent, have already started complaining about "you're going out to have fun and aren't taking us."

Local weather heads are suggesting that the side effects from hurricane Dean may "influence" the weather here and most of the really wet seasons at Winfield have been in years when there was tropical storm activity, but it's usually been the stuff in the Gulf (Texas to Florida landfall) that's had visible impact. I'm predicting "minor effect" from the current stuff; but of course I'd be heading out even if the forcast was for less than perfect weather (within reason?).

I should have the coffee pot on by sometime around 10:00 AM tomorrow, somehwere down there, so stop by if you make it in time to sit and gab.

John

Travel safely, John, and save some coffee for us. We're still 16 days away from leaving, but counting the days (which is how I know there are 16 of them, of course). The revised plan is to drive up on the 7th after work because Michelle wants to go the dulcimer picnic at Island Park on Saturday.

Hi Uncle Phil--

Tell Michelle I'll likely see her at the picnic--Nurse James and his wife Jean and I usually manage to get there to see what kind of workshops they're doing.

And you KNOW the coffee will be waiting for you. I don't think that old pot gets to dry out between batches the entire time we're out there... gotta have something to go with the JD, you know.

See y'all there.

The dulcimer picnic is usually a pretty fun event. I've evaded going the past year or two due to a shortage of parking at the Park. While I've had fun when I went, I figured some who have more fun deserved the space.

Lin has said she plans to be there for the picnic, so she' may see you 'fore I do. I'll have coffee on anyhow, so do what's easiest for you guys as far as scheduling your first cuppa'.

A minor glitch - as always. Just after my previous post I went out to pick up some of the odds and ends and found the back gate - the 12 foot one the camper slides in through - unlatched and swinging in the 35 mph breeze. Apparently when I opened it to move the lawnmower to the back yard yesterday, the tension was relieved enough for the gatepost on one side to "assume a new position." Recent rains probably had something to do with it. The two gate sections overlapped by about 3 inches, so it was impossible to get them latched together again. The little plastic pipe that the builders put in for the drop-latch was also hammered out from the free swinging of the gate. About 4 hours to get some cable, make a sway/tension brace, and pull the post back upright.

Of course there had to be a problem just getting the cable. The nearest decent hardware shop only had 1/4" cable, and only had 3/32 or 3/8 inch cable clamps. "Field expedients" applied, and gate straightened up.

The only problem after I got the two gate sections so that they'd latch together, was that the drop-latch now missed the pipe that was supposed to hold it in one place relative to terra-slimy by about 3 inches, although that did make it easier to drive in a new chunk of solid iron pipe for the anchor. (I could postpone extracting the old broken chunk.) A much improved installation - as long as I remember not to mow the pipe when it gets a little grass around it.

With a 4+ hour detour from planned last minute packing up, I'm probably running a little behind schedule; but it's never been a really firm schedule. I think I'll still make it there by about 07:00 in the morning, but I'll nap a little longer after I get there 'stead of quite so often before.

John

LOL. My SO would not be at all happy if he didn't have four or five crises to contend with at once!

John made it to Winfield, is parked and hooked up and "in line," but reported that the wind was too gusty to put out the canopy and he was parked in full sun on the south ball field. Guesstimated a couple hundred RVs there already.

The good news is that so far the air conditioner is running all right! I've finished my last-minute proofing job and will join him in the lineup on August 31st. Looking forward to music and fun and seeing the "Winfield family" again...

We talked to the relatives in Winfield last night. The weather sounded pretty good after some overnight showers. It was about 15F cooler there than here which sounds pretty good to me.

Sorcha, my wife's relatives say they know your husband's relatives, though not well. Linda says Chris is a cat person and used to come into the store for cat supplies. I thought they might have bought the store from your college friend, but apparently there was another owner in between. They don't know him, but say they do know his ex-wife.

Refresh. Seven days until the start of the Walnut Valley Festival, but just a couple days until we head up that way. It's raining hard here in North Texas this morning. Getting all of the lawn care finished before Friday may be a problem, but as someone once observed "that's what sons are for." It'll get taken care of while we are gone.

A bunch of our stuff is leaving for Winfield today, shipped as freight to the kinfolk's store for a very modest fee. It will be nice not to have to squeeze it all into the car.

Well. Looks like we are going to Winfield. Mr's grandmother died this AM (NO condolences please, she was a nasty old bitch). Service will be Tues. afternoon. Is there any way to meet up with anyone somewhere?

We won't have wristbands and I can't fiddle. (surg. incision in hand).

Island Park, maybe, or a cafe somewhere for coffee?
Not sure when we are leaving, this afternoon maybe, but I'll be able to check in from Mom's computer.
