Subject: Open Mike's grandson: bowel obstruction From: open mike Date: 27 Aug 11 - 12:49 PM I got a call from my daughter from the Emergency Room last night. Her son was admitted to the hospital over night for observation The youngster (2 1/2) was experiencing abdominal pain and it was possibly diagnosed as telescoping or folding or twisting intestines. Any one have experience with this? This is described as intussusception http://www.healthline.com/galecontent/intussusception http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/930708-overview I hope the little guy does not need surgery. Apparently this is more common in boys than girls. Please send best wishes! |

Subject: RE: Open Mike's grandson: bowel obstruction From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 27 Aug 11 - 01:57 PM Have just been talking to my sister (a doctor) on the phone, so I asked her about it. It's not uncommon, and can be sorted out with air blown gently into the intestines form the rectum. This often 'untelescopes' the bowel, with no need for surgery. Barium can do the same. But if an op is needed (resection of the affected area) it isn't serious and heals up pretty quickly. Hope it can be put right with the 'air' method, but I realise it's always worrying to have a little one ill and in pain. Very best wishes for your grandson's speedy recovery Mike. |
Subject: RE: Open Mike's grandson: bowel obstruction From: Crowhugger Date: 27 Aug 11 - 02:19 PM Adding to what Eliza said, in my own experience having had both bowel obstructions and bowel surgery, surgery is not a bad option from a pain control point of view: It's far better for surgery than for obstructions, a pretty good upside if that becomes the best course of action. |

Subject: RE: Open Mike's grandson: bowel obstruction From: open mike Date: 28 Aug 11 - 11:33 AM All is well...after over night observation he came home...better than ever. Thank goodness no surgery was required. The worst part is that they missed out on a planned end-of-summer camping trip. It is a blessing that this didn't occur while they were out in the woods. Thanks for all good wishes. Having had the "air" treatment during a colonoscopy, I know how uncomfortable that bloating feeling can be. They do live near-by so we visit often. |

Subject: RE: Open Mike's grandson: bowel obstruction From: Will Fly Date: 28 Aug 11 - 01:50 PM Good news after bad! My sister, who lives in Tucson, developed excruciating pain in the intestines - which were also twisted. This was apparently caused by internal scar tissue from two Caesarean ops some years ago. Luckily, she got straight to hospital, was operated on (some intestine was removed) and she healed OK. Hope all continues to go well. |
