Some friends of mine are taking a cruise which visits Boston and Portland after stopping in New York, then up to Nova Scotia, on to Canada and back to UK. On board will be hot but can anyone advise on what the weather is usually like and what clothes they should bring for on shore visits. Thanks.

Try for a wide range - New England in September can be everything from hot and humid to cold, dank and rainy. Often the same day.

The common factor will be humidity.

Best to dress for summer and carry a jacket and sweater.

All that said, September is my favorite time. Cool enough to want to be active, not too many tourists, the ocean is still warm, so it's comfortable walking the beach. Warm is a relative term here, about 50F. By the middle of Sept, the leaves will be turning, at least in the swamps.

What, no stop in Newport, RI? (Lots of cruise ships are there already and they will continue to be there through the fall.)

I suggest clothing that can be layered including a light wool or fleece sweater, jacket, or shawl, but most daytime wear can be cotton or cotton/synthetic blend. An umbrella or waterproof poncho will be useful, too.

"When Fall Comes to New England" Cheryl Wheeler, Youtube

For the most part, humidity drops to very comfortable levels in the fall. Layers work, as mentioned. The coastline in Maine will be pretty as it changes from summer to fall.

Yay, Newport! I wonder what shore excursions will be offered there, or if they will do something independently. Whatever they do, I hope they enjoy it.

Some of the fall colors appeared last month!

In the fall of the year there is no place on earth more beautiful than New England.
