The stories about those who punched bears and lost the gamble are even more....ummm... interesting, though we don't hear some of them.

I have a rescued Chinese Creste' Hairless dog. I call him my 'Chili dog'. Sometimes I call him my "Alaskan Bareskin.' :)

I think I might be a little wary of a woman who would do that!

Here's a story from 2002 about Lyle Lovett and his run-in with a bull:

While country music has long been known for its cock-and-bull stories, its latest tale is hardly about the one who got away — Lyle Lovett simply wasn't that nimble.

Lovett, 44, suffered a broken leg Wednesday when a bull trampled him at a farm belonging to his uncle Calvin Klein — a Texas cattleman, not the fashion designer — according to the Associated Press. The peculiar, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter underwent emergency surgery at Houston's Memorial Hermann Hospital, where a hospital spokesperson said he remained in good condition Thursday (March 28).

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kevin Coupe of the University of Texas, Houston, said Lovett, who also fractured his thumb in the bull bashing, may remain hospitalized for up to three days and a full recovery could take from six to eight months. He's expected to be moving about on crutches Friday (March 29).

The singer was in the cattle pen at Klein's farm in Klein, Texas, when the bull flipped his uncle, and Lovett came to his aid. Klein sustained minor rib injuries.

The country singer will undergo months of rehabilitation following the surgery to repair multiple fractures to the shin bone of his right leg. The bone was comminuted, or pulverized, in several places, and given a six — the highest rating — on the Schatzker scale, which measures the severity of fractures.

When I was around 13-14 years old I had a Dachshund/Shepard mix - no joke. Funniest looking dog you ever saw. Looked just like a German Shepard low-rider!

Being suddenly and brutally siezed by a bear or other large carnivore is one of the things that Dachshunds typically worry about in their spare time. You'll see a Dachshund lying on the carpet, his brow furrowed with care, his little eyebrow bumps moving up and down nervously, and you can tell he's worrying about stuff like that.

I'm glad that Fudge got rescued, and I congratulate his courageous owner.

Now I know why Caesar Milan says you should not permit your dogs to barrel out the door without your permission. First you check for bears in the yard, then you let the dogs out.

The real question is...Who let the damn bears out???!!!!!!

It's an outrage! They're a menace! Something must be done about it.

Here in Juneau we live in cages- albeit fairly large ones- and the bears are free. The only place I've ever lived where, if you are late for work, this is a legitimate excuse: I had to wait until the bear moved away from my car.

Week before last I watched as Fish and Game darted and hauled off four bears from my back yard. The officers suggested I should close my window in case a dart's course went awry. True story.

See? That's exactly what I mean. It's terrible. I worry about bears a great deal, but thank heavens for one thing! I do not live in Juneau.

Just got home from music. On Wednesday nights a number of us gather at a local downscale hotel nestled against a mountainside. Tonight a mama bear and two half-grown cubs were hanging out at our car. My friend whistled and slapped his hands and they slowly moved away.

I held the leash of my little Crestie- so far as I know, he's never been close to a bear and I have no idea of how he will react. Bred to be a vermin chaser, not something that big.

I like them medium-rare with barbecue sauce and inside a hollowed out baguette . . .

Lovely little dogs actually, had a 'toy' version in the 60's, what a little character he was.

Bears ARE vermin! Very large vermin. It is a Dachshund's sworn duty to eliminate all vermin, that's what we were bred for, but we tend to draw the line at very large vermin...like bears or cougars. In the case of very large vermin, we prefer to simply sound the alarm, then stand well back and let the forces of law and order deal with the situation.
