Subject: BS: Another SNOW thread From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 30 Oct 11 - 06:46 PM How are our Northeastern US (and Canadian?) Catters faring? Here in southwestern NH we have over 2" of snow out there, gently covering my dahlias, my unplanted garlic patch, and the last of the cherry tomatoes. Oh, well. I have electricity, internet, phone, water, etc. But a bit further south, in western Massachusetts, there is devastation, no power, and it's uncertain when it will return. My daughter and a few of her friends are headed up here to the woods of NH to hang out until they can go back to their apartments and jobs. How's everyone else? |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Ed T Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:03 PM No snow in Halifax Nova Scotia, just wind and rain and not really cold. I don't believe there is/was snow anywhere in Nova Scotia today. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: LilyFestre Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:11 PM The Allentown area in Pennsylvania got about a foot of snow yesterday. Power has been out for 24 hours and is expected to be out until at least late afternoon tomorrow. Michelle |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: SINSULL Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:18 PM About six inches. Lost an apple tree and part of a fence. Much too early for this kind of crap. SINS, Grunmp |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: GUEST,999 Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:24 PM Beautiful sunshiny day here in the Chateauguay Valley. Shorts and t-shirt weather if you also wear long pants and a jacket. No snow at all. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: kendall Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:25 PM We lost internet, phone and TV. I was reduced to reading. Reminded me of W.C. Fields when he said, "It was in the wilds of Afa gan stan, someone lost the corkscrew and we had to subsist for several days on food and water." |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: gnu Date: 30 Oct 11 - 07:34 PM A skiff here. I see spots in NE got near two feet of wet stuff. I just can't type the four letter word this early. Oh, a skiff is okay, but two feet? |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Janie Date: 30 Oct 11 - 08:08 PM Doesn't take near as much snow to knock down tree limbs (and power) when the leaves are still on, and you guys and gals in much of the northeast got a lot! Thinking of you. Saw a little snow in the mountains on my way to Mom's this weekend. Even a little snow in that part of the country is a bit of a shock in late October. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 30 Oct 11 - 08:18 PM Yes, snow on the leaves can be a terrible thing. We had a snow like that in 2004 or so. I remember seeing a pick-up truck with a large branch driven like a spear through the windshield. Thank goodness no one was in the truck. At that time, the newspaper commented that the strongest trees are oaks and crabapples. We have a mature crabapple, and all it lost were a few twigs. If you want an ornamental tree I recommend a crabapple. Oaks are beautiful of course, but very large and take a long time to grow. We do have to have our crabapple sprayed, however. It's worth it to us. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: ChanteyLass Date: 31 Oct 11 - 10:50 PM I'm fine in RI and got about 1 inch of snow. Some parts of the state got more, and some got none. There are many people without power here including some who had no power for several days after Hurricane Irene, but I had no problem. For people who have lost power: stay safe and warm. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Rapparee Date: 31 Oct 11 - 11:06 PM Might or might not snow here tonight. Many of our power lines are buried. It's already snowed above 5200 feet or so, melted off. The Tetons and other high peaks are snow covered, though. Snowed -- shouldn't that be "snown"? Like in "know" and "known"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Nigel Parsons Date: 01 Nov 11 - 09:15 AM Snowed -- shouldn't that be "snown"? Like in "know" and "known"? Kno! The past tense of 'know' is 'knew'. So, "Yesterday it snew!" Cheers Nigel |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: ranger1 Date: 01 Nov 11 - 10:33 AM We had 12.9" at work, and no power for about 24 hours. Glad I moved the John Deere tractor out from under the trees where it was parked - big branch down where the Deere would have been. We also had several people camping in the campground who ended up with squashed tents from the weight of the snow. Why anyone would choose to go camping in a northeaster baffles me, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: bbc Date: 01 Nov 11 - 10:43 AM About 6 inches of snow at my place in the NY corner with CT & MA, but Litchfield County, CT (Folk Legacy) was hit hard--closed roads, downed telephone & power lines, trees down. Caroline Paton is still without power or telephone today (November 1, 2011) & may be for some time yet. She is spending nights with friends/family & has been in touch with us by cell phone. She is ok. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Bill D Date: 01 Nov 11 - 10:46 AM "Good King Sauerkraut LOOK OUT! On your feet uneven While the snew lay round about.... what's snew? I dunno, what's snew with you? (Songs of the Pogo, Walt Kelly)" |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Bettynh Date: 01 Nov 11 - 12:49 PM About a foot here in the city of Nashua, NH. I just got my power (and central heat) back. The semidwarf apple tree in the back yard is back to being a dwarf, all the lilacs around the foundation are flat. Biggest mistake? I forgot that I've been grinding wholebean coffee. I cook on gas (and have heat in the ell the kitchen's in), but had to SOS my son to bring me a pound of ground coffee. The local supermarket is canny - no lights, but they had battery backup for their cash registers, so they were open and doing business (though no perishables) first thing Sunday morning. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Tinker Date: 01 Nov 11 - 11:23 PM We lost lots of small branches and ended the storm with all service intact.... But Sunday night our Verizon connection went down and took phone, internet and cable with it. Verizon says it'll be out November 20th to hook it back up.... UGH! But the lights and heat are on and we just got a 'hotspot' for the next month.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: BTNG Date: 01 Nov 11 - 11:27 PM coldish but sun-shiny and all, didn't snow on Halloween...amazin' |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: katlaughing Date: 02 Nov 11 - 12:19 AM Anyone heard from Bat Goddess and curmudgeon? Other places in CO have had small to lots of amounts of snow, but the Banana Belt has rain with maybe a tiny bit of snow overnight. It is going to get colder, down into the 20s, with another storm by the weekend, then 50s next week! |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: Mrrzy Date: 02 Nov 11 - 03:10 PM We had a sprinkle but I hope this is like three winters ago when we got TONS and TONS and it was great. |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: BTNG Date: 02 Nov 11 - 03:19 PM the weather channel, tv stations, newspapers etc. are calling for snow on Saturday here, amounts vary, according to the source |
Subject: RE: BS: Another SNOW thread From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 02 Nov 11 - 03:23 PM Here in Norfolk UK, it's quite normal to say, "That snew while I was up the city." Snew is a recognised past tense of snow. |
