And not only fat(?)

No sex please, we're British and over 60

10/14/2011

LONDON — An event organized by a British city to school its older residents in the arts of safe sex has been cancelled due to lack of interest.

The "Generation Sex" workshop was part of an annual over-60s festival in the southern English city of Portsmouth and billed as a "frank, fun and factual" way for older people to talk about sex in later life.

"The background was the risk of sexually-transmitted diseases in older people and the need to practice safer sex," said Drusilla Moody, Portsmouth Council's tourism and visitor services manager.

Entry would have been free, but those taking part would have had to supply proof of age and of residency in Portsmouth.

These requirements are no longer needed, since the workshop was cancelled "because too few people booked places", Moody said.

(Maybe they just think they know it all? That's pretty "British" isn't it?)

I once read a true story about a woman who worked as a cook and lived in the holiday complex restaurant. Sadly she put on so much weight that she could not get through a doorway. The time came when the building had to be demolished and she had to be air lifted out of the building through the roof. Which brings to mind the chap who reported that his wife's knickers had been stolen and although she didn't mind the disappearance of the knickers she would like the ten pegs back.
Enough of this joking. I seriously wonder if craving for food is not the brain craving for liquid.
Please remember that most of us prefer a nice personality and are not put off by size, heavy ,tall, thin, large or small breasted.Although I must admit not to enjoy seeing a very heavy person stuffing vast quantities of food, or alternatively thin people who pick away at food.
I must admit to being two stone over the weight that I was when I was younger playing all manner of sports.
Al

"and this was when we still had insurance so it was private" says it all, very working class hero Richard.

I wouldn't dream of not having private medical insurance, and more so my wife who since the end of July this year has had a TVT, cataracts in both eyes removed and an endoscopy, not to mention countless physiotherapy sessions - money very well spent.

You would be surprised at the number of working class people at our local BMI hospital!

My "before" picture is me in the family line-up at Karen's daughter's wedding--- two weeks after my myocardial infarction, and a stent into my lower anterior descending (aka "widow-maker") coronary artery.

I look like I've got a bloody beach-ball down the front of my suit.

Fourteen months later, after 5-6 days a week in the gym, I've taken off 20 pounds. But that actually is taking off 40 pounds of fat and putting on 20 of muscle.

I no longer eat butter; or very much beef.

My body fat percentage is 13%... the edge of the "athlete" range for men.

A typical "cardio" work-out is 10 minutes on a treadmill at 4.3MPH and 15-degrees; 54 floors on a stair-mill, 20 minutes on an elliptical cross-country course. Then maybe ten minutes of rowing. And then two circuits of weight-training.

I celebrated my six-month anniversary of my MI doing the Philadelphia Lung Association "Fight for Air Climb," 55 floors up a sky-scraper in 14 minutes. I celebrated one year by doing the same climb in 9:36 on a stair-mill.

I'm hoping to post a respectable "Masters Class" score in the event this Spring.

I'm just about the same jeans size as I was at half my age, 26 years ago.

This is hard work. And on the eating side, it's not one decision, but a dozen decisions a day and hundred a week and a thousand a year.

It's abandoning the cart (trolley) and choosing to carry the two 31-pound boxes of cat-litter from the back of PetSmart to the cashier and to the car. (The cashier remarked, "well that'd be the work-out for the day as she watched me curl them onto the belt." Yes, it would, and was.)

It's worth it.

And I *should* have done this before needing to save my life a procedure that cost $US70,000 retail and about $US15,000 at the insurance rates. Not to mention that a heart attack really hurts. A lot.

Eat every two hours... just a small bit of fruit or veggies... simple stuff out of a jar or can if need be. And, then, a proper meal for supper or even a treat in lieu of supper and some veggies a few hours later.

Been a few diet threads here over the years. Good info on them. Some Catters have lost over a hundred pounds following simple diets. Check em out.

As for "fat" women... I like a woman with some meat on her bones. Now, obese to the point of unhealthy is never good for her or for "me", but neither is skinny really... is it?

By the way, autolycus, thank you and I take on board your warning about eating too much fat. My sister harps on about it all the time. I don't crave sweet sugary things like Patsy, but stuff in butter, cheese, and cream. I'm a devil for dairy. It all ends up on my legs and bum, ghastly. But I find it hard not to eat it. An addiction I suppose. Must try harder to give it up.

I know what you mean Patsy, as people nowadays are obsessed with appearance and glamour and make nasty remarks about fatties. I used to subscribe to this view but my African husband cured me. In his culture, your looks are very much secondary to your personality and good qualities. It's very heartening to know, and any remarks about my fat bottom now wash over me. (Even my strict doctor sister is horrible about my weight, and keeps saying "You're obese!" as often as she can!)

Hello Eliza, I do care about my health really and eat as much fruit vegetables and fibre as I can but deep down I am also doing it because of the ridicule obese people get. My weight isn't too bad, but I still have to keep an eye on it being on the short side. On the other hand I do have a sweet tooth so it is hard to say no to a portion of gateau or fruit pie.

Well I have had my gall bladder removed, together with a pancreatic pseudo-cyst drained in the same procedure and, dear Autolycus, you have my absolute assurance that it is not, by any stretch of a vivid imagination, painless. In fact I was on morphine on demand for several days in hospital, and on strong oral painkillers for several weeks afterwards.

In fairness, I didn't have the keyhole surgery that's frequently carried out nowadays, it was an open procedure with a 12-inch wound right across my abdomen, but anyone who claims that it's painless is deluding you or themselves, probably both.

Just back from health check - yes I am over weight but not as much as I thought. Blood sugar perfect. Cholesterol a tiny bit high and best treated with more exercise. Blood pressure tiny bit high and best treated with exercise.

Now I need to get the pain sorted so I can get proper exercise.

Eliza

I had severe infection of the gall bladder back in Feb and nearly died.

After, I said to a surgoen I didn't specially want my body invaded again to have the bladder out. He said Fine as long as I had as near as dammit a no-fat diet.

First i was scared then I set about finding a new cuisine and then a lapsed a bit on the fat front.

Last Saturday I had the same initial pain as back in Feb and began packing my bag for hospital while waiting to hear from the emergency doctor. I confessed to her having lapsed into some fat and she said, that's it. However by the time I was speaking to her, the pain had gone and when I pressed where the pain had been, it no longer hurt.

She said, lay off fat and drink plenty of water, and see how it is in a few days. She said it was a flaring up of the inflammation.

I've done that and no further problems.

My point is I've been generously given a warning shot. I am heeding it.

The advantage of the low/no fat route is that it is just better for me/anybody, so that rather than the easier one of just painlessly having the gall bladder out is a blessing in disguise.

Others may not get warnings first.

You pays your money etc.

Patsy, I'm totally the opposite. I'm not in the least bothered by comments about my appearance. What I am a little concerned about are the health issues. I don't want to become diabetic, have cancer, thrombosis etc etc which we're told are linked to being fat. But I've just eaten two crumpets dripping with butter, so I suppose I'm a hopeless case!

I am not a UK woman. I am an American woman living in the UK. You know... one of the notoriously fat Americans.

I had only little extra weight (about 15 pounds or little over a stone heavier than optimum) while I lived in the US. But I was active and pretty fit, otherwise I would have been more like both of my parents who were/are obese. Oddly enough their parents were slim.

In 2005, I lost my daughter, the shock sent my autoimmune system into a tizzy and left me with rheumatoid arthritis the pain of which has made me sedentary.

Being married to a vegetarian I don't eat terrible foods, or large portions for that matter. Drink is limited to about once a month a pint or couple of glasses a wine. My favorite food is ice cubes and favorite drink is water.

Now 70lb heavier than I was 6 years ago.

Swimming is the recommended activity and I can do without further taxing already inflamed ankles, hips and shoulders. However the community pool which has steps by which I can access, is no where near bus stop. Also my work is no where near a bus stop. So early morning swim would be very expensive having to take taxi to and from the pool.

I am an example that there is usually more than one thing going on in any case of obesity.

gnu, you're quite right! I (once!) lost three stones in weight by eating MORE, and MORE OFTEN, with a nice homemade soup containing many different vegetables, including cabbage, and some meat stock. I ate this every two hours or so, as much as I wanted, and I didn't feel at all hungry. I also drank lots and lots of water. I was as full as a stuffed cushion, but I lost weight, at the rate of about three pounds a week, and felt marvellous. The trouble though with all diets is maintaining the ideal weight and not putting it all on again.
I do feel that being fat is rather better than being filled with vituperative hate for all and sundry.

I think you'll probably find that explosive ordnance disposal has largely (there's that word again) migrated to the engineer corps -- RE.

The fact that obesity is overwhelmingly a poor people's problem should help point to the reasons for it. What are low-wage jobs like nowadays? Mostly quite static -- stocking shelves, call-centres, big-box retail, serving at the counter in fast-food franchise joints. What pleasures can folks on those wages afford? TV, cigarettes and cheap restaurant meals.

Middle-class obesity is all about time debt -- two hours of commuting per day, by car or public transit, on top of knocking yourself out to keep that job. How many office workers eat at their desk? In my office, everybody. Who's got time for exercise? Only those who have deliberately planned their lives around it -- and it sure helps to have a spouse to take up the slack.

Anyone who says that s/he has the answer to the problem of today's obesity epidemic doesn't understand the question.

For anyone who might have missed it, people often snack when they're not hungry but thirsty. They just recognise hunger far more readily.

So, instead of snacking, drink plenty of water - not tea, coffee or soft drinks - thereby lowering your calorie intake and satisfying the real rather than the false need.

These suggestions are of the same category as looking left and right to make sure it's safe before crossing the road. You're improving the odds on a healthier and happier life.

Figures show that the amount of people (including teachers) that applied for ill health pensions over the past ten years due to health issues related to their body bulk (including bogus without factual medical evidence) went up by 35%. Fortunately review boards challenged the majority of them resulting in whinging and crying and no pay outs. You can find proof of this on most public forums.

Yeh Bluesman is a bit weird. he's got problems that bloke. People with that sort of talent for abuse are a bit sad. I urge no one to get hurt by what he says. He's very damaged goods.

If when you're teaching and you get a kid like that in the class - really sociopathic - all the class is looking at the clock, really tense, willing the lesson to be over. And I think that is a sort of microsm of their lives.

Their partners, their, kids, their lovers ...inevitably they end up waiting the chance to get away from the poor sods - watching the clock til they can escape the oppression.

perhaps we can make a difference to him, and show him that life is not just a creative opportunity for his power to insult and hurt. this forum can be such a source of love and decency.

I sense that for some poor damaged souls, like Bluesman, it is maybe their last best chance to learn basic good manners and consideration for others - a pity that his parents neglected to pass that on to him. but we can't all be blessed with a background that teaches us a loving and normal regard for goodness.

There is no excuse for someone digging their grave with their teeth. Firstly they look disgusting, secondly they place a burden on an already over stretched health service.

Have you noticed, the only people attempting to defend or make excuses for these bison's carry a fair bit of steak on their own arses.

I would start and hit them hard in the pocket, like smokers and drinkers. Have you ever sat on a three hour flight with some monster beside you ? I have, six asses hanging out of the seat, listening to their laboured breathing, smelling their sweat. It never stops them eating half the contents of the food trolley when it comes around. Booking flights should require you state your weight. If you arrived on board with two heavy items of hand luggage you would be charged extra, so tax their fat asses.
